Kalaignar University to function from June: Minister Govi. Chezhiaan
Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhiaan on Sunday said that the newly announced university in Kumbakonam, named after former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, will start functioning from the 2025–26 academic year.
'The university will start functioning from June this year,' he told reporters in Kumbakonam.
Commenting on the ongoing dispute between the State government and Governor R.N. Ravi over the appointment of Vice-Chancellors, Mr. Chezhian reiterated that the Supreme Court had stated that the Governor did not have the authority to appoint VCs. 'The Governor has been indulging in improper actions. Vice-chancellors have acted according to their respective university regulations. The Governor does not have the right to convene such meetings,' he said, commenting on the vice-chancellors boycotting the recent meeting convened by the Governor.
Dismissing TVK leader Vijay's recent criticism of the DMK, Mr. Chezhiaan said it would have no impact on the party's prospects. With the AIADMK forced to continue its alliance with the BJP after talks with TVK failed, all other parties in Tamil Nadu were only competing for second place while the DMK's victory remained secure.
Mr. Chezhiaan inaugurated two extended bus routes of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Kumbakonam division. The services include Route A49 (Kumbakonam–Kudavasal via Enanallur) and Route 16B (Mayiladuthurai–Thirupanandal via Thiruloki), introduced in response to local demands for improved connectivity.

SC junks plea challenging NTA practice on conduct of NEET-UG
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking the publication of the final answer key of NEET-UG 2025 before results are declared. A vacation bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan asked petitioner Najiya Nasre as to why the high court wasn't approached in this case. Replying to the query, senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for Nasre, said the issue raised in the petition has 'all-India ramifications'. 'Many students are involved and would adversely be impacted by this,' he argued. The top court told the petitioner that she should approach the concerned high court for relief. The petitioner had moved the top court challenging the practice followed by the National Testing Agency in which the final answer keys of the exam are published after the final result is announced. Opposing this, the NTA said it was only for the betterment of students that the final answer keys are published after final results are declared. The petitioner said this leads to revaluation of ranks, leading to 'serious consequences' and in violation of Article 14. Also in top court Plea over Ambanis' security rejected The Court on Friday pulled up a litigant for filling repeated pleas and binned his petition seeking revocation of the 'Z' plus security cover provided to industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his family, saying arm-twisting of the court's process cannot be allowed. A top court also clarified that it has authority over who is provided which security cover.

TV anchor not liable for panellist's statement: Supreme Court
Supreme Court (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: Putting a premium on the right to free speech and expression, Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of Sakshi TV anchor K Srinivasa Rao, who was held by Andhra police for abetting alleged derogatory and defamatory statements by a panelist on his live show on Amaravati. Justices Mishra and Manmohan said, "Rao has not made the statement. His journalistic participation in a live TV show deserves to be protected, so as that of his fundamental right to free speech. Rao shall be released on bail on conditions to be imposed by the trial court." Guest called Amaravati 'capital of sex workers' On June 6, political analyst V V R Krishnamraju had appeared as a panelist on a show anchored by Rao on Sakshi TV, considered a mouthpiece of opposition YSR Congress Party which while in govt had abrogated previous TDP dispensation's Amaravati capital project, and referred to the capital as 'capital of sex workers". Appearing for the 70-year-old Rao, senior advocate Siddharth Dave told a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan that he was only hosting the TV show and that the statement is not attributed to him but to a panellist over whom he had no control. Opposing the plea challenging the arrest, senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra said that when the offending and derogatory statement was made against women of Andhra Pradesh, the TV anchor, instead of stopping the panellist, was seen encouragingly laughing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The bench sought the AP government's response to his petition seeking the quashing of the FIR against him. However, it cautioned Rao not to involve himself in any defamatory statement or allow any panelist to make such a statement in live TV shows.

Showdown Like Never Before: 4.5L+ New Voters Upend NMC Arithmetic
1 2 3 Nagpur: With the Maharashtra govt clearing the way for long-delayed elections to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) setting a deadline for ward formation, political parties are bracing for a contest unlike in the past — driven largely by a steep surge in voter numbers over the past decade. Between the 2012 municipal polls and the 2024 Assembly elections, the number of registered city voters jumped from 19.09 lakh to 23.65 lakh — a rise of nearly 24%. This addition of over 4.5 lakh voters is expected to dramatically impact poll outcomes across wards, forcing parties to redraw campaign strategies and reconnect with a vastly expanded electorate. As the state gears up for ward delimitation under a Supreme Court-mandated four-month schedule, the voter roll from the 2024 assembly elections is likely to form the basis for redrawing ward boundaries, despite the court's instruction to use the 2011 Census for population data. This has generated intense political interest in how wards will be structured — with voter increase, caste equations, and geographic spread all expected to influence the final layout. Speaking to TOI, former corporators, many of whom are eyeing a return to the fray, say the new numbers have altered the ground realities. "In my ward, there were about 45,000 voters in 2017. Now it's closer to 60,000. You can't rely on the old networks anymore," said a former corporator from south Nagpur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Ten thousand new voters can completely swing the result if you're not in touch with the ground." Another ex-corporator from North Nagpur noted, "Many of the new voters are first-timers who have no memory of our previous work. This means we have to start from scratch — explain who we are and why we matter." In 2022, when the MVA govt initiated a ward restructuring exercise, the total number of voters stood at 22,33,866. By 2024 assembly elections, the figure climbed to 23,65,998 — an increase of 1,32,122 in two years. According to political observers, this growth translates to an average increase of 10,000 to 15,000 voters per ward — in some areas even more — significantly raising the bar for candidate outreach and visibility. During the eight-year gap between civic elections, Nagpur witnessed two Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha polls. Yet, the absence of an elected civic body since March 2022 weakened the direct connect between former corporators and residents. While a few leaders stayed active by raising local issues or joining party-led protests, many drifted into political obscurity. With the civic elections now firmly on the horizon, parties are scrambling to revive their ground presence, but are also increasingly aware that the electoral map they knew is no longer the same. "The voter increase isn't just a statistic — it's a warning," said a senior BJP functionary. "If you can't talk to these new voters, someone else will." "One thing is clear: this will be a very different election — not only because of delayed timing or ward changes, but because the city's electorate itself has grown, diversified, and changed in ways that will test even the most seasoned of politicians," said political pandits.
