UAE Team Emirates' Ayuso takes 2nd in Tirreno-Adriatico
Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates XRG got off to a strong start on day one of Tirreno-Adriatico, with the 22-year-old taking 2nd place on the stage behind Filippo Ganna of Ineos-Grenadiers.
The Italian stage race began with the usual out-and-back time trial of 11.5km in the town of Lido di Camaiore on Italy's western coast, with Ayuso aiming to defend his victory of 12 months ago on this stage.
Ayuso, who holds two victories to his name already this year, clocked a time of 12:14, blitzing the pan-flat course with an average speed of 54.4kmph.
The result sees the UAE Team Emirates-XRG co-leader now sitting in 2nd overall and will win the white jersey as the best young rider on stage 2 from Camaiore to Follonica (192km). The podium was rounded out by Johan Price-Pejtersen (Lidl-Trek).
Ayuso commented, "I think I managed a good ride, especially with the General Classification in mind. I missed a little bit on the final leg coming back after the turn; I didn't have quite the sensations I hoped for."
In the coming days, he will try to stay up front and gain time, emphasising the team's focus on major mountain stages ahead this week

Marquez beats brother Alex for seventh sprint win of season
Ducati's world championship leader Marc Marquez recovered from a poor start to win Saturday's sprint at the Aragon Grand Prix ahead of his brother Alex and Fermin Aldeguer of Gresini Racing for an all-Spanish podium on home soil. Marc's seventh sprint victory of the season in eight rounds moved him 27 points clear of Alex in the championship, with the Ducati rider winning by more than two seconds. Marc Marquez had to work for it, but in the end, he claimed a seventh consecutive Sprint victory in 2025 after a dramatic and action-packed showdown. Marc had broken the lap record in qualifying to take pole but he started poorly, losing traction due to wheelspin, to briefly drop to fourth when he was shoulder-barged aside by Pedro Acosta. Alex, meanwhile, shot off the line to take the lead going into turn one but Marc moved up to second with a neat overtake on turn one of the second lap, setting his sights on Alex. Haaland scores as Norway crush Italy in WC qualifier, Croatia rout Gibraltar
Erling Haaland scored and Norway humbled Italy 3-0 for the first time in 25 years in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup on Friday. Haaland collected a through ball from playmaker Martin Odegaard and rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the box for the third goal three minutes before halftime.
