Orlando Pirates' latest coaching gamble echoes Jose Riveiro's yesteryear surprise appointment
Three years ago, when Orlando Pirates made the controversial choice to recruit relatively unknown Spaniard Jose Riveiro as their head coach, scepticism flooded sports forums.
Many questioned the wisdom of one of Africa's most storied clubs looking to Finland's First Division for inspiration, especially considering the nation's modest ranking of 69th in the world. Fast forward to this week, and the sea of doubt has resurfaced, but this time directed at the new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Riveiro's tenure did not start very well, but instead of firing him, Pirates persevered with him, much to the disgust of the club's demanding supporters who mocked him by labelling him a 'plumber'. This is a common term used by locals as a veiled reference to an unknown coach, hailing from a relatively obscure coaching background.
The quiet Spaniard surprised many by leading the Pirates to significant victories, including lifting the MTN8 trophy in 2022. His adept blend of strategy and a fresh take on football impressed both supporters and critics alike. The calculated risk had yielded unexpected rewards.
The Moroccan-born Ouaddou's first coaching appointment was with Algeria's national football team as an apprentice coach in 2020. He worked alongside Frenchman Djamel Belmadi, a vastly experienced coach.
When Ouaddou joined Marumo Gallants last season, he brought a fresh approach that was needed to save the club from relegation, and he did so in style with a shock win over Pirates.
The Pirates, known for their rich history and passionate following, have opted for Ouaddou instead of coaches like Pitso Mosimane and Rhulani Mokwena, both of whom are presently jobless.
Pirates' management will need to harness patience and support for Ouaddou as he embarks on this challenging journey. Like Riveiro, Ouaddou must navigate the complexities of South African football, which is fraught with expectations from a fanbase eager for success.
The pressure to perform is immense. If results do not materialise sooner rather than later, the fog of inefficiency will cloud the Mayfair-based team's ambitions for success.
The risk was glaringly apparent during Riveiro's tenure, but the initial gamble became a defining chapter in the club's recent history, culminating in exciting performances and revitalised enthusiasm among supporters.
As Ouaddou begins crafting a philosophy that aligns with Pirates' ethos, he may yet become the next unexpected success story in the club's illustrious narrative.
No doubt, fans will be wondering if Ouaddou will replicate the magic that Riveiro and hope that this audacious move pays dividends in the quest for glory.

UPDATED schoolboy First XV rugby rankings after thrilling Paarl derby
The 'unofficial' ranking of South Africa's top schoolboy rugby sides was settled at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl on Saturday when Paal Boys' High upset hosts Paarl Gimnasium 35-33 in a match that will long live in the memory bank. Any attempt at ranking South Africa's First XV rugby schools is guaranteed to upset as many readers as it will please. The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list. Many lists are to be found floating around the internet – none of which are in fact 'official'. While it's true that thanks to an increase in the number of schoolboy rugby festivals around the country more schools are playing schools they previously wouldn't have faced, no school plays every other school both home and away during the season. Hence, every list should be taken with a pinch of salt and is subjective at best. Having said that, here is the unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list after the weekend's matches: Ranking School Province 1 Paarl Boys' High Western Cape 2 Paarl Gimnasium Western Cape 3 Grey College Free State 4 Affies Gauteng 5 Oakdale Western Cape 6 Paul Roos Western Cape 7 DHS KwaZulu-Natal 8 Helpmekaar Gauteng 9 Garsfontein Gauteng 10 Noordheuwel Gauteng 12 Stellenberg Western Cape 12 Rondebosch Western Cape 13 Wynberg Western Cape 14 Outeniqua Western Cape 15 Westville KwaZulu-Natal 16 Northwood KwaZulu-Natal 17 Hilton College KwaZulu-Natal 18 Grey High School Eastern Cape 19 Jeppe Gauteng 20 KES Gauteng Milnerton 36-42 Bishops Oakdale 21-17 Paul Roos Outeniqua 45-13 Worcester Gim Paarl Gimnasium 33-35 Paarl Boys' High Parel Vallei 18-52 Wynberg Rondebosch 34-19 HTS Drostdy SACS 43-25 Brackefell Stellenberg 18-10 Boland Landbou Dale College 10-17 Graeme College Grey High School 15-46 Grey College Marlow 24-26 Pearson Stirling 5-33 Hudson Park Glenwood 53-10 Parktown Maritzburg College 27-31 Pretoria Boys High Northwood 5-38 DHS Helpmekaar 38-22 Rustenburg Jeppe 39-31 KES Menlopark 39-35 Monument Noordheuwel 28-22 Garsfontein Waterkloof 19-64 Affies NOTE: More results will be added as they become available Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

Pirates coach Ouaddou hails Appollis after MTN8 victory over City
'I'm happy for him. You know Appollis for a long time," said Ouaddou. Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was full of praise for Oswin Appollis after the 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon. Appollis picked up the Man of the Match award on his debut for Pirates after scoring and also winning the penalty that was converted by Patrick Maswanganyi. READ MORE: Appollis helps Pirates make perfect start to MTN8 title defence 'I'm happy for him. You know Appollis for a long time,' Ouaddou told SuperSport TV after the game. 'When he is surrounded with good players you can even see the best of him, but not only him. 'I want to congratulate all my boys, he took the man of the match because of the collective,' added Ouaddou, Even though he was happy with the win, Ouaddou cautioned that the job was not done yet because they want to go all their way and claim their fourth successive MTN8 title. 'I think it's a big victory for us but it's not finish. We have to go through and the target is to win the MTN8,' he said. 'Yes, with Orlando Pirates winning every cup- we know it's not easy but we will give our best to try and win it.' 'Definitely we have to win it. It will not be easy but we will give our best to win it,' concluded the Moroccan coach.

Orlando Pirates 2-0 Polokwane City: FIVE things we learned
Orlando Pirates kicked off their 2025/26 season with a comprehensive victory over Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi were enough to seal a 2-0 win for the Buccaneers and seal their spot in the MTN8 semi-finals. Having signed 11 new players, Abdeslam Ouaddou started the match with three new signings and all of them impressed on the day. The Soweto giants are aiming to win their fourth consecutive MTN8, having won four of the previous five editions. Abdeslam Ouaddou looks in control The Moroccan coach took over from Jose Riveiro in July and there were questions on whether he would take the team to the next level. In his first official match in charge, the former TS Galaxy coach looked calm and in control. He selected a strong and balanced team, leaving out the likes of Deano van Rooyen, Evidence Makgopa and Makhehlene Makhaula on the bench. Oswin Appollis is already feeling at home It took the Bafana Bafana winger under 20 minutes to find his first goal for Orlando Pirates. The 23-year-old attacker is regarded as the best signing this transfer window and in the 60 minutes he played, he showed why he is valued highly in the PSL. Relebohile Mofokeng is not at his best Mofokeng didn't end the 2024/25 season on a high, having dipped in form towards the end. He looked sharp in pre-season, however against Rise and Shine, he often disappeared. He has been linked to various teams in recent weeks and perhaps his mind is already elsewhere. New coach loves youngsters Just like Riveiro, Ouaddou appears to be a fan of introducing youngsters in big games. Late into the match, the Orlando Pirates coach subbed in Cemran Dansin. The 20-year-old made his debut in the final 10 minutes and looked very positive whenever he had the ball at his feet. The Pirates defence was not tested The partnership of Mbekezile Mbokazi and Nkosinathi Sibisi was not tested on Saturday. Both looked very comfortable in possession and dealt with long balls with ease. Polokwane City didn't attack much and when they did, they lacked creativity or combinations, allowing Orlando Pirates to clear any danger.
