Kevin De Bruyne 'held transfer talks with Liverpool' as Man City impact emerges
Kevin De Bruyne has decided to join Napoli after ending his almost decade-long stint with Manchester City and is said to have spoken to Liverpool about his future earlier this year
Kevin De Bruyne had a conversation with Liverpool before committing to Napoli this summer. The midfielder's contract was left to expire by Manchester City after the playmaker played a prominent role in the club's successes under Pep Guardiola.
De Bruyne signed for City almost a decade ago in then club-record deal for £55million. The Belgian had indicated that he would like to stay at the club this summer, but the team's hierarchy ultimately decided his journey would come to a closer.
That left De Bruyne in a position to consider his options, and while Napoli ultimately proved persuasive, the 33-year-old had alternative discussions. A 'short conversation' occurred with Liverpool, while Juventus enquired over a move and Inter Milan were unable to find space in their squad, as per the Athletic.
But the choice came down to Chicago Fire and Napoli with the Serie A side winning out. And Manchester City may have even played a role in aiding De Bruyne's decision.
It is reported that De Bruyne was in-part motivated to opt for Napoli in order to prove City wrong for letting him go. The Champions League and the opportunity to play under Antonio Conte were said to be decisive factors.
De Bruyne noted earlier this year that he was 'surprised but I just have to accept it' after City made their decision. The veteran told the club he still had a lot to give but never received an offer.
De Bruyne's move to Napoli was announced early in June as a picture of the Belgium international alongside Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis was posted. The Premier League legend included a short message to his new club: "Sono qui."
That translates to 'I am here' in English. De Laurentiis also posted the photograph on his social media pages, along with the comment: "Benvenuto Kevin!" That translates into 'Welcome Kevin' in English.
De Bruyne will hope to have as big an impact as Scott McTominay following his move to Napoli last summer. The Scotland international helped the club to Serie A glory and earned the accolade of being named the Italian top-flight's Player of the Year.

"He did a fantastic job to help us remain in the division when we he first came in under difficult circumstances, and he worked hard to repeat that again in 2024-25. Premier League 2025-26 squad values as promoted sides' daunting task laid bare
The 2025/26 Premier League season is only just around the corner with clubs already knowing their upcoming fixture lists but new data has revealed a huge gap between sides ahead of the new campaign The Premier League's big six now boast just over £5billion worth of talent between them as the gap between the leagues continues to grow. New data from transfermarkt has revealed that the division's big hitters boast eye-watering squads heading into the new season following a summer of heavy spending so far. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City lead the way with their squad being valued at around the €1.35bn (£1.15bn) mark. Chelsea are not too far behind with a squad valuation of €1.21bn (£1.03bn). Liverpool and Arsenal are marginally behind that, with their squad values over the €1bn threshold too, sitting at €1.09bn (£929m) and €1.01bn (£861m) respectively. Despite years of heavy spending, Manchester United are just fifth in the list with a valuation of around €818m (£697m) across their squad. Meanwhile, at the other side of the list, the three newly-promoted squads somewhat unsurprisingly prop up the table. Championship winners Leeds have a €211m (£180m) squad valuation as they prepare to return to the Premier League following a two-year absence. Burnley are marginally behind at €187m (£159m), while Sunderland are way behind €137m (£116m), which is of little surprise given the Black Cats' recent venture into League One. And that will likely make their task of survival next season even more difficult given Man City effectively have a squad worth ten times more than theirs. And that would be a worry for Gary Neville having previously warned about the growing gap between the Premier League and Championship. He said: "There's no doubt it's becoming more fixed, the Premier League. That's a fact, if you think about it. Not necessarily the three same teams going up and down, but it's becoming more and more difficult. The same five or six teams going up and down. "There are some clubs who have done it successfully, but you always get the feeling that there are certain clubs at the start of the season who have got a chance of going down and some have no chance of going down. "I think that's becoming more fixed as a position, and the competitive nature of the entire league is something definitely to be concerned about.
