Daniels Balodis gives St Johnstone stay hint as Victor Griffith shines for Panama
After being part of the Perth club's relegation from the top-flight, the central defender has enjoyed a successful international break with his country.
Balodis started both Latvia's game – a 0-0 friendly draw with Azerbaijan and then a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against Albania on Tuesday night.
The 27-year-old impressed in both.
Asked what the future holds for him, Balodis answered: 'It's early June now.
'I'll return to Scotland at the end of the month, but right now I just want to rest and enjoy a short break.
'It's been a long and challenging season.'
Balodis isn't the only Saints player to enjoy a successful time in national colours.
Adama Sidibeh scored a double for Gambia, while Victor Griffith played the full 90 minutes in Panama's World Cup qualifier against Nicaragua, winning 3-0.
He will now take part in the Concacaf Gold Cup finals.
Of the three foreign players who signed for Saints in January, Balodis adapted quickest and best to Scottish football, with Griffith and Jonathan Svedberg hampered by injuries as they sought to hit the ground running.
There are high hopes that all three will benefit from having a better grasp of the game here in their second season.
The start of the Premier Sports Cup is still a month away but, as of now, Courier Sport understands that none of those three players have given any indication they are seeking to leave Saints.

He made 23 appearances for the club in the Greek top flight last term, and there had previously been a suggestion the 23-year-old might return to the club for another loan spell this term. However, Swansea have now swooped in. 'But to see the way the team played, the philosophy that the team play with is a different type of football that you love to see. 'I am really happy, it was a big win and a good one for the club as a whole. 'We've been talking about this move for some time now, and I've been told about the plans and the project and I fell in love with it from that first meeting. 'I am just over the moon that the deal is done.' A New Zealand international, Stamenic has won 31 caps for his country, netting three goals. He started his career at Western Suburbs before later going on to sign for Team Wellington. FC Copenhagen brought him to Europe in 2020, although he was soon loaned out to fellow Danish side HB Koge in Denmark, before heading to Serbian side Red Star in 2023. Primarily a holding midfielder, he will give Swans boss Alan Sheehan further options in the middle of the park. Gareth Southgate ‘enjoying life' and not actively seeking management return
It is 13 months since the former defender called time on his successful eight-year stint as national team boss in the wake of their Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain in Berlin. Southgate led England to back-to-back European Championship finals, as well as runs to the World Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals, after stepping up from the under-21s role in 2016. The 54-year-old suggested during his time out of the game that his next job could be away from football and says he is in no rush to return to the dugout. 'I'm enjoying my life,' Southgate told the PA news agency. 'I've got quite a lot on. 'I'm in the middle of writing a book, I've got several business interests. I do some work on leadership, help with some young coaches. 'But I've also got time to travel and play a bit of golf, play a bit of paddle tennis, so yeah, I'm very much enjoying that balance.' Asked whether he is looking at returning to management or if the future lies in something else, Southgate said: 'You can't say never to anything because 15 years ago I left Middlesbrough and I wasn't certain I would manage then. 'Then I ended up on a strange path into managing the national team. But it's not something I'm actively looking at at the moment.' Southgate's sojourn meant eyebrows were raised when speculation emanated from Poland in June that his return to management could be with their national team. 'I am kind of used to it,' he said of the rumours about him. 'I mean, I was linked with the Poland job, which I knew nothing about, so that was a strange one. 'Something gets written and then it's reported everywhere, but yeah, there's probably a lot of others, but I kind of accept it now for what it is.' World Cup winner's contract terminated just THREE games into the season after clashes with fans who called him a 'wife beater'
A World Cup winner has had his contract terminated just three matches into the new season, calling an end to his turbulent 15-month spell at the football club. Jerome Boateng, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany during his decade-long spell at Bayern Munich between 2011 and 2021, signed a two-year deal with top flight Austrian club LASK Linz on May 31 last year after becoming a free agent. But the 36-year-old defender's contract has now been terminated a year early by mutual consent after a torrid spell, with Boateng chalking up just 13 appearances for the club since the free transfer following a wealth of injury issues. Just months after his arrival in Austria, Boateng avoided jail time but was handed a suspended fine and a warning after a German court found him guilty of premeditated bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend. The mother of his twin daughters accused Boateng of hurling a lamp at her, which missed, during a fight they had on holiday in 2018 — and then of injuring her arm by throwing a small cool box at her and later hitting her and pulling her hair. Boateng was ordered to pay a total of just over £84,000 to charity organisations by the judge, a court spokesperson said in July 2024, while the suspended fine of just over £168,000 only had to be paid if he committed another offence. He was not charged with assault, coercion or defamation on the legal principle of 'in dubio pro reo', which dictates that a decision should favour the defendant in criminal cases if there is any ambiguity or doubt regarding their guilt. Despite avoiding jail time, Boateng's legal case led to LASK fans loudly booing and insulting the former Germany international with 'wife beater' chants back in March. Keen to pursue a fresh chapter elsewhere, Boateng said in a club statement on Wednesday: 'I would like to thank LASK for their trust and the time we spent together here in Linz. 'It was an enriching experience to work in a new environment once again. Now the time is right for me to open a new chapter. 'I will soon announce what new challenges — both sporting and personal — await me in the future.' Meanwhile, LASK sporting director Dino Buric added: 'Jerome has always behaved professionally throughout his time at LASK and has done everything he can to help the team with his experience. 'He has played an important role, especially for our young players, by providing them with excellent support and encouragement.'
