Hundreds of Bengaluru residents get tax notices for not including car parking area! Here's what happened

Mint7 days ago
A simple technical glitch in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike's e-Khata has left homeowners fuming, as hundreds have received show-cause notices.
E-Khata is an electronic property certificate that maintains ownership information in an online database and has been made mandatory since 1 July 2025.
According to a Times of India report, homeowners in Bengaluru received a show-cause notice for not including the car parking area when mentioning the carpet size of their property.
'A notice has been issued demanding tax for the car parking slot in my apartment,' Richmond Town resident Rajat Rao told TOI.
'What is weird is that BBMP has unilaterally decided the dimensions of the parking lot, without even cross-checking documents or physically inspecting the apartment,' he added.
However, the civic body officials said that the issue was triggered by a software check recently introduced by the BBMP's new system, Kauvery. The software automatically flagged any mismatch in property area details between e-khata and EPID.
The TOI report said that the worst affected are the residents of Shantinagar assembly constituency, where the e-khata system was first introduced before its rollout in other parts of the city.
Homeowners are demanding that Bengaluru district in-charge minister D K Shivakumar intervene and end their harassment.
'The bureaucrats piloting the e-khata project and deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar should have some clarity on this. Why should we suffer and be forced to prove our credentials when they cannot streamline the system?' affected property owners asked.
Calling it 'harassment,' they also questioned why handout notices were being issued 'after issuing e-khatas,' especially when the discrepancies in property tax declarations could have been pointed out earlier.
'When I raised the issue, the official suggested I appeal with BBMP's e-court. Now this is another sham. I am supposed to appeal for something that I'm not even responsible for, but has been wrongly accused of,' said Vijay Kumar, a Yelahanka resident.
Another Bengaluru resident, Sudhindra Halappa Gowda, asked why they were being tortured so much. 'What about all the bureaucrats and politicians who are not even paying taxes? They are not being penalised. Why is the middle class suffering?'
A senior BBMP official defended the system, saying that the staff doesn't manually input anything. 'The software picks up discrepancies. If people have entered wrong details in their e-khatas, how are we to blame?'
He clarified that the car parking area is never explicitly mentioned in the sale deed in terms of size; only the super built-up area is. 'Citizens have ignored this all along, but parking space is also a property, and tax is due on it.'
BBMP special commissioner (revenue), Munish Moudgil, told TOI that they intended to issue notices only in case of properties where the variation was more than 5%. 'For those under 5%, we didn't intend to send any alerts.'
However, Moudgil said, due to a technical glitch on the part of NIC, mass emails were sent out even to those who were not at fault.
'These affected residents can appeal, and we will resolve the issue promptly,' he said.

Ganesh Mandals asked by CM to have ‘Operation Sindoor' as theme this year

MUMBAI: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday asked Ganesh Mandals in the state to have 'Operation Sindoor' as the theme for this year's pandals. He said the country has shown its strength to the world through this operation; hence, it needs to be showcased by the Ganesh Mandals to create awareness during the festival this year. Devotees carry an idol of Lord Ganesh for visarjan (immersion) in Mumbai. The 10-day long festival will end on Monday. (Kunal Patil/HT photo) The CM's urge comes at a time when the opposition has been blaming the PM Modi government for using 'Operation Sindoor' for their political benefit. 'The Ganesh Mandals should use this year's Ganpati Festival to create awareness about the strength India showcased to the world through 'Operation Sindoor' and the importance of using Swadeshi (indigenous) products,' Fadnavis said. 'The mandals should also display tableaux based on 'Operation Sindoor', dedicated to the soldiers.' He had called a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review security and other arrangements for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations that begin on August 27. Fadnavis appealed to the mandals to coordinate with the administration to celebrate the festival in an atmosphere of peace and enthusiasm. He then directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to grant a five-year permission to the sculptors involved in making Ganesh idols. 'Though their licenses will have to be renewed every year through the single-window system BMC had started,' he stated. He further instructed the BMC to increase the number of artificial lakes for immersion of idols and to add more boats along the seashore for immersing tall idols in deep waters. The state government has given Ganesh Chaturthi the status of a state festival, the CM said. Therefore, the state is implementing extensive planning to celebrate it on a large scale. All concessions provided to the Ganesh Mandals last year will also continue this year. 'While celebrating, proper adherence to the law must be ensured. Since Eid-e-Milad will also be observed during Ganesh Chaturthi this year, care should be taken to maintain communal harmony so that law and order are not disrupted anywhere,' he stressed. He also assured he would take steps to extend the permitted days for use of loudspeakers during the festival, as per the court directives. Fadnavis also asked the Ganesh Mandals to submit a written declaration to the BMC administration stating that their offices are not used for commercial purposes. After they do so, no property tax will be levied on their offices.

14 Bastar villages set to hoist Tricolour this I-Day after decades of Maoist threat

Raipur: This Independence Day will mark a historic milestone for 14 remote tribal villages in Chhattisgarh's Bastar division, where the national flag will be hoisted for the first time since independence. The change has been made possible due to the establishment of new security camps in Naxal-affected interiors after January 26-2025, primarily in Bijapur, Narayanpur, and Sukma districts. These villages were earlier dominated by the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and once saw black or red flags tucked everywhere on national days, accompanied by diktats through leaflets and banners warning people against celebrating Independence Day. Patriotism, in any visible form, was absent. But this year, officials say, there have been no Maoist leaflets, no black or red flags, and no attempts to deter celebrations. Bastar zone inspector general of police P Sundarraj told TOI, "The tricolour will be hoisted at village centres in the presence of paramilitary forces, Bastar police, and residents. The 14 villages fall in the category of new camps set up after January 26-2025, meaning they have never hosted any national festival before. Besides, 15 other villages where security camps came up after August 15 last year have already celebrated Republic Day but will be observing Independence Day for the first time. " He said that the new security camps are functioning as integrated hubs for development and public outreach. "It is heartening to witness the joy and enthusiasm among the villagers in the interior regions of Bastar, who will be celebrating Independence Day for the very first time on August 15-2025. This historic moment has been made possible by the sustained efforts of our security forces and the establishment of new security camps in these remote areas in recent times. The presence of these camps has not only improved the security environment but also instilled a strong sense of confidence among the local population, enabling them to participate freely and proudly in national celebrations," IG Sundarraj said. Youth and children are especially eager to witness the tricolour in their villages. "Equally, our jawans deployed in these areas are excited to join hands with the villagers in strengthening the democratic fabric of our nation," the top cop of Bastar said. The active involvement of the people in preparing for Independence Day festivities reflects the deepening bond between the administration and security forces. Villages such as Gunjepurti, Pujarikanker, Bhimaram, Kutul, Padamkot, Nelangur, Pangur, and Uskawaya will see the tricolour flutter in the wind of their land for the first time. Statement in Pune court apprehending threat to Rahul's life being withdrawn: Congress spokespersons

Pune: A statement filed earlier on Wednesday in a Pune court by Rahul Gandhi's lawyer, apprehending threat to the Congress leader's life, would be withdrawn from the court on Thursday, Congress spokespersons said late in the evening. Rahul Gandhi is facing a defamation case before a special MP/MLA court in Pune filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, over alleged objectionable remarks made by the Congress leader against the Hindutva icon in his March 2023 speech in London. Congress spokesperson Surpiya Shrinate said in a post on X, "Shri Rahul Gandhi's lawyer had filed a written statement (pursis) in the court citing threat to his life without Rahul ji's consent. Rahul Gandhi strongly disagrees with this. The lawyer will withdraw this written statement from the court tomorrow." Pawar stated, "My client has taken strong exception to filing of the pursis dated 13.08.25 and has expressed his disagreement with the contents of the pursis. I shall file a formal application tomorrow (Thursday) for withdrawal of the said pursis before the Honb'le Court." When asked why he filed the pursis when the matter was not discussed with his client, Pawar told TOI, "I applied my mind and exercised my discretion as a lawyer in respect of what defence I must take and what documents I need to file in pursuit of the case for my client. However, I will now withdraw the pursis tomorrow from the court." The case has been posted for the next hearing on Sept 10. (Perjury Plea by Satyaki) Satyaki Savarkar's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar filed a plea seeking action against Rahul Gandhi for perjury on the grounds that despite being supplied with all the documents and digital evidence relating to the defamation case, he has denied receiving them. The magistrate has asked Gandhi to file his written submission on the perjury plea on Sept 10. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
