Statement in Pune court apprehending threat to Rahul's life being withdrawn: Congress spokespersons

Time of India2 days ago
Pune: A statement filed earlier on Wednesday in a Pune court by Rahul Gandhi's lawyer, apprehending threat to the Congress leader's life, would be withdrawn from the court on Thursday, Congress spokespersons said late in the evening.
Rahul Gandhi is facing a defamation case before a special MP/MLA court in Pune filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, over alleged objectionable remarks made by the Congress leader against the Hindutva icon in his March 2023 speech in London.
Congress spokesperson Surpiya Shrinate said in a post on X, "Shri Rahul Gandhi's lawyer had filed a written statement (pursis) in the court citing threat to his life without Rahul ji's consent.
Rahul Gandhi strongly disagrees with this. The lawyer will withdraw this written statement from the court tomorrow."

Another Congress spokesman Pawan Khera also released a post on X on the similar lines, stating that the application was filed without Gandhi's consent.
A press release issued by Gandhi's lawyer, Milind Pawar, read: "The pursis dated 13.08.25 was filed by me in the court without instructions from the client.

The contents of the pursis were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri Rahul Gandhi."
Pawar stated, "My client has taken strong exception to filing of the pursis dated 13.08.25 and has expressed his disagreement with the contents of the pursis. I shall file a formal application tomorrow (Thursday) for withdrawal of the said pursis before the Honb'le Court."
When asked why he filed the pursis when the matter was not discussed with his client, Pawar told TOI, "I applied my mind and exercised my discretion as a lawyer in respect of what defence I must take and what documents I need to file in pursuit of the case for my client.
However, I will now withdraw the pursis tomorrow from the court."
The case has been posted for the next hearing on Sept 10.
(Perjury Plea by Satyaki)
Satyaki Savarkar's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar filed a plea seeking action against Rahul Gandhi for perjury on the grounds that despite being supplied with all the documents and digital evidence relating to the defamation case, he has denied receiving them. The magistrate has asked Gandhi to file his written submission on the perjury plea on Sept 10.

Don't link J&K's statehood to terror, Omar says day after SC's Pahalgam reference

Omar Abdullah (File photo) SRINAGAR: Chief minister Omar Abdullah decried Friday the practice of tying terror attacks to J&K's political fate and asserted that Pakistan should not be allowed to influence it through terrorism, a day after Supreme Court observed that 'incidents like Pahalgam' must be considered when deciding on statehood. 'Will the killers of Pahalgam and their masters in the neighbouring country decide whether we will be a state?' Omar said in his Independence Day speech, his first since taking office last Oct and the first by a CM since Article 370's abrogation and J&K's conversion into a Union territory Aug 2019. Speaking at Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium, Omar termed SC's reference to Pahalgam 'unfortunate' and asked: 'What kind of justice is it? Every time we are close to statehood, they will do something to sabotage it. Is this fair? Why are we being punished for a crime in which we had no role?' He pointed out that 'J&K's residents from Kathua to Kupwara' had protested the Pahalgam massacre of April 22 in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down. The CM announced a signature campaign across all 90 constituencies of J&K in the next eight weeks with the aim of submitting signatures to Supreme Court in support of restoring statehood and to take 'people's voice directly to Delhi'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Cost of a Virtual Dermatologist Consult Might Surprise You AskLayers Learn More Undo The top court on Thursday gave Centre eight weeks to respond to petitions seeking statehood. 'Me and my colleagues will use these eight weeks to go to each constituency,' Omar said. In his speech steeped in lament, the CM cited reports in various quarters about an 'announcement this Independence Day from Delhi' -- an allusion to restoration of statehood. 'I had hoped that in some corner of today's (PM Narendra Modi's) speech, there would be an announcement for J&K. We were told the papers are ready and it's only a matter of time. But nothing happened.' Expressing his anguish further, Omar said he wished no one became the CM of a Union Territory with an assembly -- like J&K --comparing the National Conference (NC) govt he leads to 'a horse asked to run with two front legs tied'. 'It has nothing except pain and anxieties. I have been chief minister of the state and now of the UT. The system of dual governance is not for success but for instilling defeat.' The Omar-led govt does not control key departments such as home, which is vested with Centre-appointed lieutenant-governor (LG) Manoj Sinha. Omar said he had never imagined before taking office that his cabinet's decisions 'could be altered or thrown into the dustbin', remarks seen as an allusion to the LG's overriding powers. 'I am accountable to the assembly and assembly members to the people. But the bureaucracy in the present system is not answerable to the elected representatives.'

India's cultural unity propels nation forward: Margao MLA

Margao: Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Friday said that while many nations once predicted India's fragmentation, its deep-rooted culture, steeped in ancient art, has been the very force that has kept the nation united. He said that this cultural unity continues to propel India on its path to becoming a global leader. Addressing the gathering after unfurling the Tricolour at the South Goa district headquarters to commemorate India's 79th Independence Day, Kamat said the nation's rapid progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led India on a firm path to becoming the world's number one nation. He cited several internationally recognised schemes, including the Garib Kalyan Yojana, which provides free food grains to 80 crore people, which he said was the largest free ration programme of its kind globally. He also pointed to Ayushman Bharat, describing it as the world's largest govt-funded health insurance scheme, which benefits about 55 crore citizens. The programme was attended by South Goa collector Egna Cleetus and SP Tikam Singh Verma. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
