PA Turnpike tollbooths removed at interchanges

Yahoo09-06-2025
(WBRE/WYOU) — Multiple tollbooths have been removed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike in areas where Open Road Tolling (ORT) has begun.
The PA Turnpike has started removing toll plazas along the turnpike, starting with the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) and on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476), with plans to remove all tollbooths by 2028.
The two tollbooths have been removed where the ORT system has launched. The ORT system will have gantries above the turnpike that allow for unobstructed traffic flow. You will be able to drive highway speeds through the ORT gantries.
Death investigation underway in Williamsport
'The PA Turnpike has been a leader in transportation from the day we opened in 1940 as 'America's First Superhighway' and while traditional tollbooths made practical sense then, we now have more advanced and efficient systems that better serve today's 21st century customers… The switch to ORT modernizes the Pennsylvania Turnpike for today. We look forward to providing customers with a safer and more convenient travel experience on the PA Turnpike and better serving the communities we touch along the way.'
PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton
The ORT gantries charge the driver by E-ZPass or by Toll By Plate.
The switch to ORT in the east of the state occurred in January and will launch in the turnpike's west section in 2027. The PA Turnpike Commission says the tollbooths on the mainline will be fully removed across the turnpike by the end of 2028.

Pump the Brakes on E-Bikes

I applaud the efforts in New York City to adopt an e-bike speed limit of 15 miles per hour, paralleling safety actions abroad ('New York Has a New E-Bike Speed Limit—and Can't Enforce It,' Page One, Aug. 8). Scientific literature from Europe, Asia and the Middle East documents the severe neurosurgical, orthopedic, maxillofacial and other traumatic injuries associated with the higher rate of speed for e-bikes compared to traditional pedal bicycles. The U.S. should learn from this experience and spare the public repeated tragedies. New York can continue to lead the way by implementing new requirements for licensure and registration for those e-bikes that travel at higher speeds more closely resembling mopeds and motorcycles. This will enable law enforcement to identify these vehicles in traffic flow and restrict their use to the roadway instead of bike lanes and sidewalks, where they are more likely to collide with pedestrians in densely populated areas.

Man Used AI to Generate a Custom Tune for His BMW 335i

TikTok creator wyattwebsterrr might have just pulled off one of the wildest DIY tuning experiments yet. He recently bought a 2007 BMW 335i for $1,500. Of course, for that price, it wasn't perfect. It sat on 240,000 miles and needed a new transmission, which he paid just $200 for. Other than a straight-pipe exhaust, the BMW was completely stock. Then, he asked ChatGPT to write a custom tune. The result is a beater that would outrun a brand-new BMW 3 Series. Wyatt started with a simple question for ChatGPT: "Can you give me a custom tune for my 335i?" He then supplied the AI with details such as his ECU version, the fact that it has a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the type of turbos it was equipped with. In return, ChatGPT handed over a full custom tune file. Wyatt then used the MHD Tuning app to load the AI's creation straight onto the E90's ECU. Usually, this process would take hours, if not days, when working with a reputable tuner. But thanks to modern technology, it took just a few minutes. People love modifying 335i models because of the N54 engine that lives under the hood. From the factory, the twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six sends 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Although Wyatt has yet to release all the power figures, he posted a TikTok showing the tuned 335i's new driving experience. Boost pressure jumped to 19.3 psi. The exhaust, once relatively tame, now delivered loud burbles and pops that were impossible to ignore. The rear tyres broke traction much easier than before, and the BMW's 0 to 60 mph time dropped to just 5.17 seconds. That's a full second quicker than before, thanks to a tune written entirely by an AI. Professional tuners spend years learning how to safely squeeze more performance out of an engine, while accounting for wear and tear and long-term reliability. While ChatGPT might be able to make a high-mileage BMW faster, there's always the risk of something breaking. Still, for a cheap 335i and a viral TikTok clip, it is hard to argue that this wasn't worth the gamble. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Volkswagen Expands XPeng Partnership To Speed Software Upgrades Across All Car Types

XPeng (NYSE:XPEV) and Volkswagen (OTC:VWAGY) announced on Friday that they have deepened their partnership by expanding their E/E Architecture collaboration beyond electric vehicles to internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) platforms in China. The move builds on their July 2024 master agreement and aims to accelerate Volkswagen's software-defined vehicle strategy, enabling faster software iterations, over-the-air updates, and shorter development cycles. Joint R&D teams validated that the architecture, initially designed for EV platforms, works across multiple powertrains, unlocking economies of scale and boosting product companies framed the deal as a milestone in their long-term strategic alliance, with XPeng CEO Xiaopeng He highlighting a shared vision for smart vehicle innovation and Volkswagen China CEO Ralf Brandstätter emphasizing the competitive and cost advantages in China's intense auto market. Volkswagen continues to count on multiple partners for its electrification drive, including Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN), which is supporting its flagship "Project Trinity" EV and a new budget model. XPeng stock gained 64% year-to-date. The EV maker's weekly registrations fell 12.9% to 7,900 units from August 4–10, but surged 229.2% year-over-year, defying a weaker Chinese EV market after July's 5% month-on-month sales drop. Lower-priced EVs under 100,000 yuan with basic self-driving features drove demand, while Fitch expects a fourth-quarter rebound as buyers rush to beat upcoming EV sales tax hikes. Price Action: XPEV shares are trading higher by 2.12% to $19.79 premarket at last check on Friday.
