PA Turnpike tollbooths removed at interchanges
(WBRE/WYOU) — Multiple tollbooths have been removed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike in areas where Open Road Tolling (ORT) has begun. The PA Turnpike has started removing toll plazas along the turnpike, starting with the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) and on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476), with plans to remove all tollbooths by 2028. The two tollbooths have been removed where the ORT system has launched. The ORT system will have gantries above the turnpike that allow for unobstructed traffic flow. You will be able to drive highway speeds through the ORT gantries. Death investigation underway in Williamsport 'The PA Turnpike has been a leader in transportation from the day we opened in 1940 as 'America's First Superhighway' and while traditional tollbooths made practical sense then, we now have more advanced and efficient systems that better serve today's 21st century customers… The switch to ORT modernizes the Pennsylvania Turnpike for today. We look forward to providing customers with a safer and more convenient travel experience on the PA Turnpike and better serving the communities we touch along the way.' PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton The ORT gantries charge the driver by E-ZPass or by Toll By Plate. The switch to ORT in the east of the state occurred in January and will launch in the turnpike's west section in 2027. The PA Turnpike Commission says the tollbooths on the mainline will be fully removed across the turnpike by the end of 2028. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pa. State Police, Turnpike Commission teaming up for Operation Orange Squeeze
State troopers will trade in their cruisers for construction vehicles in April as part of the Operation Orange Squeeze safety initiative. Troopers will, according to a press release from the Turnpike Commission, "monitor unsafe behaviors like speeding and distracted driving across work zones on the Pennsylvania Turnpike system." The Operation Orange Squeeze initiative was started nearly 10 years ago to prioritize the safety of construction workers and turnpike work crews. According to data from turnpike officials, last year saw 176 reported crashes in active turnpike work zones, resulting in two deaths and 48 injuries. "Safety has always been and will always be a key part of our culture," said Pa. Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. "As we begin another construction season, we need drivers to work with us to provide safe work zones for everyone. More than half of our employees work out in the field to ensure our roadway remains 'best in class' for our customers, and paying attention in work zones is critical to helping our workers get home safely." When Operation Orange Squeeze resumed after the pandemic in April 2023, troopers issued more than 430 citations and nearly 400 warnings to drivers disobeying the law, the news release added. "The importance of programs like Operation Orange Squeeze is not necessarily enforcement but the safety aspect and how important it is to slow down and pay attention," said Cpl. Richard Levan of Pennsylvania State Police Troop T. "One highway death is one too many, and that's why we urge motorists to slow down and never drive distracted, especially in work zones."

VA and PA Turnpike work to improve access to health resources for rural veterans
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (KDKA) - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with PA Turnpike to provide health resources to veterans in rural areas. PA Turnpike posted flyers across the entire turnpike road system, featuring information about Veterans' telehealth options, the Veterans Crisis Line and the closest VA location. "We are excited about this campaign which will help Veterans access VA health care services and benefits they earned through their service to our country," said Tim Liezert, Network Director at VA Healthcare. The VA selected Pennsylvania to expand the initiative due to the state's size and rural areas, working closely to provide information at the 17 service areas along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. "Connecting our customers is critical to what we do at the Pennsylvania Turnpike, so we are ecstatic to support an initiative that connects our veterans with valuable information about their health care options," said Mark Compton, CEO of PA Turnpike.
