About 51,000 candidates sat for the reading and writing papers, with the listening section to be held on Saturday. The exams will end on April 30, with results scheduled to be released on July 16.
Some students were taken aback by the slight changes to the questions, with one DSE candidate saying this year's Paper 1 reading exam was the most difficult he had taken.
'It was tougher than all my school exams and past DSE papers I've practised,' said Wilson Tsang, from S.K.H. St Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College.
The reading section included an article on celebrity gossip, exploring why it was popular and its possible benefits. It mentioned stars such as Joe Jonas, who recently filed for divorce, alongside Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Dalton Gomez and Hugh Jackman as examples.

Beyond typical comprehension skills, students needed to apply understanding of real-world showbiz references to tackle some of the questions.

'Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles'
'Beckham to be awarded knighthood by King Charles' King Charles chats with David Beckham at the Chelsea Flower Show. Photo: AFP David Beckham will be awarded a knighthood by King Charles next week in recognition of his football career and his charity work, reports said on Friday. The former England football captain is set to be named in the King's Birthday Honours List, according to sources. Other sporting figures who have been awarded the title include Beckham's former manager at Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, and British tennis great Andy Murray. The Sun newspaper said he would take the title of "Sir" and his wife, Victoria, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, will be known as Lady Beckham. Beckham played 115 times for England as well as for a list of high-profile clubs, including United and Real Madrid. He is currently the president and co-owner of the US team Inter Miami and co-owner of Salford City, who play in the fourth tier of English football. The 50-year-old, who has long been in the running for a knighthood, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 – a lower award in Britain's honours system. Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry. David Beckham was last month named in Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential leaders in philanthropy. He is an official ambassador for The King's Foundation, supporting its education programmes and "efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature" and has been a Unicef goodwill ambassador since 2005. Hong Kong has to improve experience of visitors as events list grows
Rightly or wrongly, Hong Kong is often compared with Shanghai or Singapore in various ways. From attracting foreign capital and talents to staging mega-concerts and events, the three places are seen as competing against each other. But while rivalry has become unavoidable on the global stage these days, Hong Kong certainly has its own unique strengths and appeal. Concerns have been raised as big names such as Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga bypassed Hong Kong for performances in Singapore and elsewhere. Separately, Shanghai has no fewer than 178 sporting events and other attractions lined up this year as part of an economic revival strategy similar to that of Hong Kong. The mainland metropolis staged two concerts by American diva Mariah Carey last week and will welcome renowned singer Katy Perry in November. With many regional counterparts also proactively promoting the mega-events economy, standing still means losing out. Hong Kong is therefore right in staging more events to stimulate the economy and consolidate its status as Asia's events capital.
