COIMBATORE: The agricultural department has set a target of conducting 900 soil tests in the district this year using its newly launched mobile soil testing unit. Introduced at a cost of Rs 75 lakh, the unit aims at reaching farmers in remote areas who previously travelled to the soil testing laboratory on the Lawley Road in the city. 'Based on their demand, the mobile unit was launched on May 30,' she said. 'If the soil sample is tested in the morning using the mobile unit, farmers will receive the results by the evening. A fee of Rs 25 will be charged per test. A maximum of 20 soil samples can be tested in a day,' she said. The unit will analyse nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and micronutrient levels in the soil. 'We planned to send the mobile unit to each block three days a week. Before dispatching the vehicle, we will inform farmers through the assistant directors of agriculture, who will circulate the schedule via WhatsApp groups. We set a target of 900 soil tests for the year,' she added. The mobile unit can also be used to test the quality of water used for irrigation, she said.
