Pittsburg pole vaulter Khaliq Muhammad among athletes to watch at NCS Meet of Champions
There's only one state leader among the competitors heading into the two-day North Coast Section Meet of Champions at Dublin High School.
Pittsburg senior Khaliq Muhammad leads all Californians in the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, 2 inches, one inch better than University City-San Diego senior Kai Anderson. Muhammad, who finished second at state last year to Anderson, has cleared 17-2 twice, the last time at the Bay Valley Athletic League championships on May 7.
Last week he broke the NCS Tri-Valley championship meet record at 17-0½, and Friday he'd love to challenge the NCS MOC record of 17-8½ set in 1987 by Acalanes-Lafayette's Brent Burns.
Field event finals Saturday start at 2 p.m., and the first races begin at 4:30 p.m.
The top three finishers and qualifying marks advance to next week's state meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis (Fresno County).
'Khaliq's competitive attitude is off the charts,' said Pittsburg's 17th-year head coach Aaron Alatorre. 'He never shies away from the moment and does whatever it takes to improve himself.'
His sister Jathiyah Muhammad won the state pole vault last season (13-9) and is now competing for the University of Arizona. Their father, Gary, is a first-year coach for the Pirates but has coached the sport for years, most notably at James Logan-Union City.
To improve his marks this season, Khaliq has worked on his speed and run the 100, 200 and 400 meters and 300 hurdles, improving all marks considerably throughout the season. His best times are 11.66 (100), 24.19 (200), 55.36 (400) and 43.31 (300 hurdles). Few, if any pole vaulters, would make such a physically taxing sacrifice to improve at his true craft.
Heading into Friday, he's bettered his 16-4 mark from the 2024 state meet 10 times and gone at least 17-0 five times in competition.
'He's under a little pressure (to win state) because his sister did it last year,' Alatorre said with a laugh. 'He's had a great season to date.'
So has teammate Tim Edwards, a senior sprinter who anchored the Pirates to a stunning state 4x100 relay title last year. Edwards has expanded his range to the 400, where his 47.47 best last week at the NCS Tri-Valley meet places him 15th in the state. He also won the 200 last week (21.51) and hopes to elevate the Pirates relay from their best of 42.00, which is well off their winning state time of 40.77 last season.
Football star Jamar Searcy (Wake Forest signee) is the only other returner to the 4x100 team, but Ahmaud Thompson and Elijah Bow have improved greatly and should help the Pirates compete with favorites El Cerrito (40.87, fifth in state) and De La Salle-Concord (40.91, sixth in state) for the top of the podium.
Pittsburg placed third at MOC last season before its shocking state title.
More NCS track and field athletes to watch: Montgomery-Santa Rosa senior distance runner Hanne Thomsen, who has signed to Stanford, has the state's second-best mark in the 1,600 (4:41.16) and the 3,200 (9:58.17). She won the state 3,200 as a freshman, placed fourth in the 1,600 as a sophomore and last year placed second in the event (9:59.81). Thomsen has dropped the 800 but has the state's No. 6 mark (2:09.04). … Other top-10 state marks this season from NCS athletes: De La Salle junior sprinter Jaden Jefferson has the state's No. 7 100 time in 10.39. He finished fourth at state last season and is the defending MOC champion. … De La Salle senior Trey Caldwell is ninth in the 3,200 (8:58.17). … Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa junior Devon Bertoli is fifth in the shot put (60-9½). … San Marin-Novato senior Trenton Jepma is ninth in the discus (180-4). … Benicia senior Grady Wachob is tied for 10th in the high jump (6-8). … Encinal-Alameda senior Levi Harte is 10th in the long jump (23-9). … In the boys triple jump, Bishop O'Dowd-Oakland senior Cameron Jones is sixth (48-7) and De La Salle senior Ant Dean is seventh (48-5). Branson-Ross sophomore Farah Allen is 10th in the 1,600 (4:48.13). … Bay School junior Soleil Warner is seventh in the 300 hurdles (42.29). … Monte Vista-Danville's 4x800 girls relay team of Sofia Fernandez, Cate Miller, Kaylie O'Connell and Ava Padilla is seventh (9:14.46). … Acalanes senior Dulcinea Vail is tied for seventh in the high jump (5-7¼). … St. Mary's-Berkeley junior Kira Gant Hatcher is ninth in the long jump (19-5½) and third in the triple jump (40-0½). Teammate Corinne Jones, a sophomore, is fifth in the triple jump (39-9¼).

Bucknor objects to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calling on OF Zach McKinstry to pitch the 9th inning gainst the Mets with his team trailing, 9 - 4. The rule, adopted before the 2020 season but not implemented until this year due to the upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic, states that a team cannot use a position player on the mound unless there is a difference of six or more runs between the two teams. Roberts is thus forced to use a real pitcher, Evan Phillips, to pitch the final inning. In spite of the rule, the practice of using such 'mystery pitchers' is continuing undiminished, with teams even resorting to them when they have built a huge lead late in the game, in order to rest their bullpens, something that was completely unseen before the decade started.

Yankees' Potential Trade for $70 Million Gold Glover Gets Massive Update From Insider
Oswaldo Cabrera was the Yankees' primary third baseman before an ankle injury all but ended his season. The Yankees have deployed Oswald Peraza at third base and are preparing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to man the hot corner when he is ready to return. With Chisholm expected to be the everyday third baseman, the Yankees are left with a question mark at second base. DJ LeMahieu and Jorbit Vivas have been playing at second base, with LeMahieu getting most of the action. After his four-hit game against the Dodgers, he is hitting .239, but he is clearly not the same player he once was at the plate. Ideally, the Yankees would find an everyday player at third base and move Chisholm back to second base, where he is more comfortable and started the season. There are options available for the Yankees at third base on presumable sellers. One target for the Yankees could be Ke'Bryan Hayes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 2: Ke'Bryan Hayes #13 of the Pittsburgh Pirates is thrown out at third base during the second inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field... TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 2: Ke'Bryan Hayes #13 of the Pittsburgh Pirates is thrown out at third base during the second inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on April 2, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. MoreUSA Today's Bob Nightengale recently revealed that Hayes, along with other Pirates players not named Paul Skenes or Oneil Cruz, are available. "The Pittsburgh Pirates are flatly rebuking all interest from teams wanting to engage in trade talks for ace Paul Skenes, but will listen to offers on every other player but him and outfielder Oneil Cruz," wrote Nightengale. "Two intriguing players are third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes and outfielder Bryan Reynolds. They were each expected to become cornerstone pieces of the franchise and both have struggled, with the Pirates expected to put them on the market at the trade deadline. Reynolds is in the third year of an eight-year, $106.75 million deal, the largest in club history. Hayes is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $70 million extension." Hayes would be a similar type of addition that Chisholm was last year. He was hitting .249 on a bad Miami Marlins team, but found new life in the Bronx. Hayes is hitting .224 on the Pirates, who have already fired their manager this year. His father, Charlie Hayes, was a World Series champion with the Yankees in 1996, and is reportedly displeased with the Pirates' development of his son. "Ke'Bryan Hayes is a defensive magician at third base," Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay said on Jan. 15. "His hitting is not what it should be, but he's obviously not happy in Pittsburgh. I talked to Charlie when the Yankees were in Pittsburgh a couple of years ago, and he was like scratching his head about some of the things they do in Pittsburgh with the hitters. Whatever the case may be, if I'm the Yankees, I'm calling the Pirates and go, 'What do you want?'" Hayes is a Gold Glover at third base, but the Yankees would be banking on him to improve at the plate after any trade. Nolan Arenado may not be available with how the St. Louis Cardinals are playing, but the Pirates are open for business and Hayes could be a fit at third base for years to come. Major Paul Skenes Update Announced Amid Trade Rumors
Major Paul Skenes Update Announced Amid Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been in the spotlight throughout the early weeks of the 2025 MLB season, but none more so than their ace right‐hander, Paul Skenes. Advertisement On Monday, during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Jeff Passan firmly dismissed any notion that the Pirates were considering trading their 22-year-old phenom, stating, "Just to be clear, the Pirates have no intention of trading Paul Skenes at this point.' Passan explained that while rival front offices will certainly inquire about Skenes at the trade deadline, the Pirates' stance remains steadfast in keeping him in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future. "When we've seen pitchers of or near his caliber get traded in the past, it's usually been with like two seasons before they can reach free agency. Paul Skenes does not reach free agency for another five years. So, it's trying to value that properly," Passan added. Skenes was selected first overall by the Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft and made his major league debut on May 11, 2024. Advertisement He wasted no time showcasing his electric fastball, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning while striking out 11 batters at Wrigley Field in just his second start on May 17. Over 23 starts in 2024, Skenes posted a 1.96 ERA with a 170-strikeout total, going 11-3 en route to National League Rookie of the Year honors and a third-place finish in the NL Cy Young voting. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Ross-Imagn Images Skenes was tabbed as the Opening Day starter on March 27 and, to this point in the 2025 season, has recorded a 2.15 ERA in 12 outings, compiling a 4-5 record. With the Pirates continuing to struggle (22-38, dead last in the NL Central), MLB trade rumors have started to swirl around Skenes. Advertisement Yet, Passan's unequivocal statement that the Pirates have no intention of trading Skenes should put fans at ease that Pittsburgh's front office is committed to building around their young ace With only one full MLB season under his belt, Skenes still has five years of control before free agency, giving Pittsburgh a window to add complementary pieces around him.
