
Govt chalking out plan to construct 10 lakh houses for poor, says Delhi CM
'The government is preparing a comprehensive strategy to meet the demand for 10 lakh houses. These efforts are fully aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of providing a house to every poor,' the CM said.
Her remarks came as she inspected the government flats built to rehabilitate slum dwellers in Northwest Delhi's Sultanpuri. She directed the officials to prioritise the immediate repair of salvageable flats and reconstruct those beyond repair.
Constructed in 2016 for rehabilitation of slum-dwellers with government expenditure running into crores of rupees, the flats in Sultanpuri have remained unallocated due to the apathy and lack of intent of the previous administration, Gupta said.
A similar situation prevails for another 50,000 flats in Outer Delhi, she underlined, adding that many units have deteriorated so severely that substantial funds will now go into repairs.
The Union government has already sanctioned around Rs 732 crore to repair thousands of these flats, Gupta said.
On criticism from the Opposition over recent demolition drives in slum clusters in the Capital, Gupta said, 'Parties that failed to act for years are now making noise for political gain. When they were in power, why didn't they distribute these houses? Why were these flats allowed to turn into ruins? Were they waiting for our government to come and do the job?'
A day after she made similar remarks, the CM reiterated her promise for a flat for every slum dweller. 'No one will be forced to live under the open sky, shiver in the cold, or struggle for basic sanitation. Our government is determined to guarantee every poor family security, essential facilities, and the right to a dignified life.'
A total of 1,060 houses have been built in ground plus four floor structure in Sultanpuri's C-Block for economically weaker sections under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The construction of the project was completed in March 2016.
The one BHK flats were to come up at a cost of Rs 52.81 crore, which later escalated to Rs 67.84 crore. The per-unit cost, as per the initial amount, was Rs 4.98 lakh. It was revised to Rs 6.40 lakh.
The tender cost of the project was set at Rs 51.72 crore, while the total expenditure reached Rs 63.83 crore.

Kerala marks golden jubilee of State Scheduled Tribes Development department
The government will always stand by the tribal populations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. He was speaking after performing the State-level inauguration of the golden jubilee of the Scheduled Tribes Development department at Nishagandhi auditorium on the Kanakakkunnu Palace compound on Saturday. The Chief Minister said a separate department was formed for the welfare of tribal communities in the State 50 years ago, on July 1, 1975. Since then, the department had taken up a number of initiatives. 'Hope the jubilee will help examine how many of these initiatives were successful, how many failed to realise their objectives, and which new should be taken up in these changing times,' the Chief Minister said. In Kerala, tribespeople comprised 1.45% of the total population. The State government earmarked 2.83% of the annual Plan outlay in the Budget for their welfare and development. In contrast, tribal communities formed 8.06% of total population of the country. However, the Union government earmarked 3.08% of the budget outlay for them, he said. He pointed out that tribal communities could live in the State without discrimination or attacks in the name of caste. However, this was not the situation in other States. Projects Since 2016-17, the allocation for the State's projects for Scheduled Tribe projects came to ₹5,752 crore. Of that, ₹4,733 crore had been utilised. An amount of ₹697 crore had been earmarked for tribal communities in this year's budget, Mr. Vijayan pointed out. He also spoke of projects implemented for the tribal communities in the area of education and land allocation. Steps were being taken to prevent dropouts and improve the functioning of model residential schools and pre-and-post matric hostels for them. A total of 8,680 acres of land had been distributed to 9,162 landless ST families in the past nine years of the Left Democratic Front government, the Chief Minister said. The department's golden jubilee coincided with International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. The theme of this year's day was 'Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures.' This was an apt theme in the time of modern technology such as AI and machine learning. Mankind has benefited a lot from them. However, their irresponsible use was creating many difficulties. The United Nations, he said, had pointed out that AI content that spread misconceptions about indigenous peoples was being created. Some of it was being used to harm their land and resources, he said. There were 48 crore indigenous people in 90 countries, according to figures. That was less than 6% of the world population. However, indigenous people comprised 15% of the poor in the world. Indigenous peoples spoke 7,000 languages and followed 5,000 different cultures. Against this backdrop, they should become visible and projects prepared for them, Mr. Vijayan said. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Smart Padhanamuri project of the Scheduled Tribes Development department. Announcement of various projects for the tribal communities was also held. Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes O.R. Kelu presided over the function. V.K. Prasanth, MLA, who was the chairman of the welcome committee, welcomed the gathering.

PM Modi to visit Bengaluru on August 10; Central Bengaluru and Electronic City to have traffic restrictions, diversions
During his visit to Bengaluru on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the Bengaluru to Belagavi Vande Bharat train at KSR railway station in the city at around 11 am. He will also virtually flag off Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune Vande Bharat trains. Thereafter, he will inaugurate the Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro and undertake a metro ride from RV Road (Ragigudda) to the Electronic City metro station. The Bengaluru Metro Phase-2 project (RV Road to Bommasandra) spans over 19 km with 16 stations and was built at a cost of Rs 7,160 crore. With the opening of this yellow line, the operational metro network in Bengaluru will increase to over 96 km. At around 1 pm, the prime minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several urban connectivity projects in Bengaluru. He will also address a public function. PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone of the Bengaluru Metro Phase-3 project worth over Rs 15,610 crore. The total route length of the project will be more than 44 km with 31 elevated stations. In view of PM Modi's visit, traffic restrictions will be enforced on the following roads between 9 am and 1 pm on Sunday. Sukhbir Badal vows to return land to farmers if SAD wins 2027 polls
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday said that if his party forms the government in Punjab in 2027, it will return all the land acquired by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to farmers, as it did with the land acquired for the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal in 2016. Badal's comments came days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the implementation of the land pooling policy, which aimed at acquiring over 65,000 acres of land across 21 cities and towns for urban and industrial development. In 2016, the SAD-BJP government passed Punjab Assembly Satluj-Yamuna Link Canal Land (Transfer of Property Rights) Bill, 2016 to return 3,928 acres of the land acquired for the project. Addressing a political conference on the occasion of Rakhar Punya (Raksha Bandhan), Badal said, 'We can sacrifice our life but will not allow even one inch of land to be forcibly acquired from the farmers. From September 1, we will launch the 'Jameen Bachao — Punjab Bachao Morcha', an indefinite march from Gurdwara Sri Amb Sahib in Mohali to the new Sheesh Mahal where AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal is residing'. He alleged that AAP was acquiring 65,000 acres of fertile land 'for peanuts' and giving it to 'builders from Delhi' as part of a Rs 30,000-crore deal. He claimed the land registry and change-of-use processes had been stopped, creating problems for farmers. Badal announced that a future SAD government would 'ban outsiders from purchasing land in Punjab' and ensure that '80 per cent of jobs in new companies go to Punjabis.' He also pledged to restore the Atta-Daal and Shagun schemes and increase old-age pensions. Referring to past electoral setbacks, Badal alleged that the AAP and Congress had 'together defamed' the SAD and claimed that the AAP was linked to the 2016 Malerkotla sacrilege incident. He condemned the registration of what he called 'false cases' against the party's senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia. 'Now the police are harassing Akali workers in Majha to implicate him in more cases,' he said. Urging people to 'strengthen the SAD' to protect Punjab's interests, Badal accused the Congress and the AAP of harming the state and its institutions.
