Gori details his Irish origins and how Italy can beat Ireland

Reuters14-03-2025

March 14 (Reuters) - Italy host Ireland on the final day of the Six Nations Championship on Saturday, a special fixture for former scrumhalf Edoardo Gori, who has an Irish grandmother and was part of a unique Italian win which may hold the secret to a repeat result.
Gori made 69 appearances for Italy and was in the only Italian side to record a Six Nations win over Ireland, back in 2013.
"My grandmother was very emotional whenever Italy played Ireland," Gori told Reuters.
"Sadly, she died when I was 19 but saw me play against Ireland at underage level. She was really happy when I started playing rugby as a child, especially in Italy where it wasn't so popular.
"I'm a little bit Irish myself, so playing against them was an incredible emotion, and they always had an incredible team, they were always my favourite side."
While always emotional, Gori's early meetings with Ireland were not always memorable for the right reasons.
"My first senior game against them ended after a few minutes with a shoulder injury," Gori remembers.
"From underage up, all my games against Ireland were unlucky, a lot of heavy defeats, and then we got that win."
Gori may not recall the finer details, but the 22-15 win was a day he will never forget.
"We had already beaten France, an historic Six Nations for us, it was the last game, against Ireland," Gori said.
"It was the farewell match for Andrea Lo Cicero, one of my mentors, there was a lot of emotion. I remember it was mid-March with beautiful weather in Rome. It really is one of the most beautiful moments of my career.
"It was a great Irish team, but I don't recall the whole lineup. Brian O'Driscoll was still playing, but I don't remember if he played that one."
Once reminded that O'Driscoll did play and was one of three Irish players to get sin-binned, Gori's memory improves.
"Yes! He was yellow carded, that's why we won," he joked.
Gori enjoys watching the current Italy team, but feels they are still an inexperienced side.
"They look to attack a lot, very different from how we were when I played, which was more defensive," Gori said.
"The problem is, they lack some experienced heads which we had, the likes of Sergio Parisse, Lo Cicero, strong figures on a charismatic level who are needed in difficult moments.
"True, we also lost a lot of games, but now it seems there is a lack of leadership, guys to turn things around."
After two heavy defeats against France and England, Italy will hope to finish the campaign in style and while Gori believes they face a tough task, perhaps there is a way to win.
"Ireland also had a big loss to France, it's been a while since we've seen Ireland suffering like this, but they are still the number three side in the world," he said.
"Our guys have the ability to play a super game, so why take away the possibility to dream, but it will be very difficult. Ireland have, unlike Italy, a lot of experience.
"We have to be competitive from beginning to end. Against England we played a great first half, but you can't start the second half conceding three tries in 10 minutes. Do that against Ireland and it will also be impossible to come back.
"But maybe some yellow cards, like in 2013, that could help."

Alcaraz and Raducanu to team up in revamped U.S. Open mixed doubles

June 17 (Reuters) - Nine of the world's top-10 men and nine of the top-10 women have officially entered into the U.S. Open's revamped mixed doubles event, tournament organisers said on Tuesday, with former singles champions Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu teaming up. The competition, which will take place a week before the singles main draw during its "Fan Week", will award $1 million in prize money to the winning team. Sixteen teams have entered and the entry window closes on July 28, after which the top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking will be in the draw via direct acceptance, with eight more wildcard entries. "In our initial discussions about reimagining and elevating the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship, we wanted to find a way to showcase the world's best men and women competing with and against one another," USTA CEO Lew Sherr said. "We were confident that we would be able to get the top players in the game excited about this unique opportunity. Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited. "It shows that the players are behind what we are trying to do, and we know that the fans will love it." Other pairs include twice U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka teaming up with Nick Kyrgios, as well as Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The matches will be best of three sets, with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all and a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games. Although a number of big names such as Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka have entered, the format came in for criticism from renowned doubles players. Reigning champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori said the new format was a "profound injustice" that disrespects doubles players, describing the new event as a "pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show". The U.S. Open had said the changes were made following the success of the "Mixed Madness" exhibition event held ahead of last year's tournament, which paired up a number of high-profile singles players into teams. "Making decisions just following the logic of profit is profoundly wrong in some situations," Italians Errani and Vavassori had said. The pair have entered the competition this year. Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud Emma Navarro and Jannik Sinner Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov Olga Danilovic and Novak Djokovic Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios Qinwen Zheng and Jack Draper Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori

Canadian Grand Prix to stay on F1 calendar through 2035

June 17 (Reuters) - The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal will stay on the calendar through 2035 after agreeing a four-year extension to the existing deal, Formula One said on Tuesday. The contract renewal also includes a long-term extension to Bell Media's media rights deal, the Liberty Media-owned sport added. Last weekend's grand prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was the 54th edition since the race first featured in the championship in 1967. The Montreal track, named after the late Ferrari great and father of 1997 world champion Jacques, became the permanent host in 1978. "I would like to thank the promoter, Octane Racing Group, for their continued efforts in upgrading this iconic venue in recent years, and all local, regional, and national political stakeholders who have worked closely together to make this event what it is today," said F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali. The race's previous contract extension was to 2029 but two of those years (2020 and 2021) were during the COVID-19 pandemic when Formula One did not visit and the deal was extended to 2031. Next year's race will be held earlier than previously with a new May 24 slot after switching with Monaco and aligning more closely with Miami.

BREAKING NEWS Sacked Premier League referee David Coote is charged by the FA after X-rated rant that saw him brand Jurgen Klopp a 'German ****'

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the FA over his rant aimed at Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked in December after a video emerged of him bashing former Liverpool boss Klopp, and a separate clip appeared to show him snorting a white powder in a hotel room while he was officiating at last summer's Euros. The astonishing initial video surrounding Klopp, which went viral on social media, appeared to show Coote looking worse for wear as he delivered an explicit rant about the Merseyside club. 'Liverpool were s***,' said the man alleged to be Coote in the video. '(Klopp is a) ****, absolute ****. Aside from having a right pop at me when I was refereeing them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying and then had a right f***ing pop of me. 'I have no interest in speaking to someone who is f***ing arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. (James) Milner is all right, I get on with him. You can see me there with a 'mask' on. But, my god, German ****, f*** me.' In a second video, he added: 'Just to be clear, that f***ing last video cannot go anywhere, seriously.' The FA have now revealed that Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3. — FA Spokesperson (@FAspokesperson) June 17, 2025 A regulation and discipline update provided by the body read: 'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. 'It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1.' The PGMOL found Coote's actions made his position as a Premier League official 'untenable' and the organisation headed up by Howard Webb terminated his employment with immediate effect late last year. Coote was then handed a 16-month ban by UEFA in February for violating 'the basic rules of decent conduct' and bringing 'the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute'. Coote has rarely been seen in public since, but a report in The Sun earlier this month showed the former official enjoying a surprise new career. Coote has reportedly started working for the delivery company near his home in Newark in Nottinghamshire and opened up on his new role. 'I'm just trying to make an honest living,' he said. 'I want to get on with my life. I'm trying to move forwards and regain a sense of responsibility and purpose. The job is keeping me busy and occupied, it's not a new long-term career.
