KISD supt. sends welcome back message after Spring Break
Dr. Fey sent a message to families Monday afternoon, saying the day marked a strong and welcome return from Spring Break across Killeen ISD. The first day back went smoothly as students re-entered campuses with focus and positivity.
The district has been preparing to implement intentional measures designed to strengthen structure, reinforce expectations, and prioritize student safety over the past week. It is committed to balancing increased security with maintaining a positive and welcoming learning environment. Dr. Fey says these efforts are about creating structure, not barriers, so all students can focus on learning in an environment where they feel safe, respected, and supported.
Dr. Fey says the district also knows it has inconsistencies in safety measures, and is taking steps to address this. The district will be closely monitoring a variety of indicators to assess the effectiveness of these changes, including tracking attendance and referrals. Campus leaders will continue to review feedback from students, staff, and families to make adjustments to strengthen the district's approach without compromising the positive culture it is building in its schools.
PREVIOUS STORY: Killeen ISD supports positive and safe return from Spring Break
As of March 24, the district has also launched a new safety tip line at 254-336-8989 so families have another way to bring concerns if they feel something hasn't been addressed. Parents are still encouraged to report issues directly to their campus or submit concerns through www.KISDisSafe.com.
Dr. Fey says Monday. March 24 reflected what is possible when the district works together to create the right environment for learning. The focus remains on ensuring every Killeen ISD campus is a safe, respectful, and supportive place for all students to learn and grow.
The previous statement comes after a stabbing at Roy J. Middle School earlier this month. Students will return from Spring Break on Tuesday, March 25.

Til Death Do Us Part—and Still Going: The Thomason Legacy of Love
Hewitt, TX (FOX 44) – After 70 years of marriage, a Stoney Brook couple is living proof that true love not only lasts but continues to blossom over time. They say diamonds are forever, but Wayne and Zelpha Thomason might just give them a run for their money. Zelpha and Wayne Thomason met in church, where Wayne was the new kid in town. As Zelpha recalls, the spark was immediate. 'They had just moved to Lawton,' Zelpha Thomason said. 'That was the first time they had come to church there. I can still see him getting up out of that pew, and I thought, who's that cute little, short new guy?' 'She was a very good, strong Christian girl,' Wayne Thomason said. 'I was very young in the church and needed someone stronger.' The wedding remains a beautiful memory, despite having little money at the time. 'My mother and I were living on not very much money,' Zelpha explained. 'I said, 'okay, I'll make my dress.' I just loved to sew. I still have my dress. I can't get into it, but I still have it.' From there the Thomason's started to grow their family. 'We just have two daughters, four grandchildren and we have great-grandchildren,' Wayne said. 'Which you never think of or expect to have until you get there.' Seventy years of marriage later, the Thomason's remain true to the vows they made on their wedding day. 'The lord was going to be in that vow, we would not destroy that vow of loving one another til death do you part,' Wayne said. '…I said I will work every day of my life,' Wayne added. 'Never let you down.' Looking back, Zelpha recalls what drew her to Wayne and the promises that built their 70-year journey. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
