Trimmier Elementary celebrates military children
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – A group of 45 Trimmier Elementary School students ranging from first to fifth grade gathered in the school cafeteria earlier this week – the only thing they have in common is a close family tie to the military. The Killeen Independent School District says counselors put together a very personal Purple Up celebration to wrap up the Month of the Military Child. The children were told that because their moms, dads or other family members serve – they also serve. According to Trimmier Elementary School counselors, the dandelion is the official symbol of the military child because it is a sturdy plant which can take root almost anywhere and its spores float on the wind, carrying it near and far. The resilient dandelion thrives in almost any climate. The district says before the students took part in three activity stations, many of them shared some aspect of their military background. Some shared places they have lived or are going and explained their mom or dad's deployments, both short and long. Some also said their parent has retired or is soon to retire from service. The students wrote notes to deliver to soldiers in Trimmier Elementary School's adopt-a-school unit. They also colored pictures, did a word hunt and made a paper bowl helmet. The district says Principal Beckie Avery told the students she also grew up in a military family – her father and her husband were in the military. It's a special and unique experience, something to celebrate, she said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Killeen ISD implements updated backpack, safety procedures
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – The Killeen Independent School District is implementing updated backpack procedures and reinforcing safety expectations ahead of end-of-year events across secondary campuses. The district says this comes as part of its continued commitment to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment. Backpack Procedures – Effective May 1 The following district-wide backpack policy goes into effect in order to support safe and orderly school operations: April 30 is the last day secondary students may bring traditional backpacks to school. Beginning May 1 through the end of the school year, only two small bags per student will be permitted on campus. These must not exceed 6×9 inches in size. Examples of permitted items include a lunch kit and a small purse. The Yondr pouch does not count as one of the student's allowable small bags. Medically necessary items are not included in the two-bag limit but must be approved by campus administration and the school clinic prior to May 1, 2025. All bags approved for athletics and fine arts must be checked in or dropped off at the sponsor-designated area before the beginning of the school day. Students who wish to continue carrying a backpack after April 30 may do so if the backpack is clear or mesh and of standard size. Specific guidelines related to clear or mesh backpacks can be found at . The district says parents and guardians are encouraged to help their child prepare in advance for this transition. What Families Can Expect: End-of-Year Safety Measures Killeen ISD says it remains focused on consistent and heightened safety protocols as campuses prepare for end-of-year events – including field day, classroom celebrations, promotion ceremonies, and special programs. While procedures may vary slightly between campuses, families can expect the following safety measures: Clear bags may be required for adult visitors and volunteers. Please check with your child's school for campus-specific guidance. All visitors must show a valid government-issued ID before entry. Even if check-in does not occur at the front office, ID verification will be in place at designated entry points. Pre-registration or orientation may be required for selected events to manage crowd sizes and communicate event-specific procedures. Access to classrooms or event areas may be restricted to registered or pre-approved visitors only. Additional guests who have not completed orientation or registration may not be permitted to enter. Campuses will provide families with event-specific logistics in advance, including information about parking, arrival times, and check-in procedures. Some campuses may use additional security screening tools, such as metal detectors or Evolv weapons detection systems. Families are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for these procedures. The district says it appreciates the partnership of all families in supporting a safe and memorable conclusion to the school year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Chaparral Theater troupe is ready for area competition!
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – The Chaparral High School Bobcat theater troupe is reaching a stage that the Killeen Independent School District hasn't seen in 20 years. The district says the troupe attracts large crowds to ambitious stage productions and earns hundreds of thousands in college scholarships. They are a Texas Thespians Gold Level Honor Troupe. The Chaparral Bobcat Theater troupe is preparing to compete in the area round of state one-act play competition, the first Killeen ISD theater group to reach that stage in 20 years. They have put in award-winning performances at district and bi-district, and will compete among six area round qualifiers on Thursday in hopes of finishing in the top three to advance to region, the qualifier for state. The district says their show, 'This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing,' focuses on three sisters who live an idyllic existence in a peaceful wood with loving parents until their mother dies, and their father becomes lost in heartache. The action follows the sisters as they pursue their own lives for the first time, one traveling west, one traveling east and one staying in the woods building a home. This one-act play is restricted to 40 minutes, but never pauses as the 16 cast members remain on stage the entire show. Theater directors Samantha Dunaway and Chad Moore have praised their students all year for their willingness to put in extra work and buy in to a journey to excellence on the stage, in the classroom and in the community. In addition, you can catch the troupe when Bobcat Drama presents 'Six, The Musical,' teen edition in a single scheduled performance at 7 p.m. at the Chaparral auditorium on April 25. Tickets are $10. KISD supt. sends welcome back message after Spring Break
KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – Killeen Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Jo Ann Fey is welcoming back everyone after the end of Spring Break. Dr. Fey sent a message to families Monday afternoon, saying the day marked a strong and welcome return from Spring Break across Killeen ISD. The first day back went smoothly as students re-entered campuses with focus and positivity. The district has been preparing to implement intentional measures designed to strengthen structure, reinforce expectations, and prioritize student safety over the past week. It is committed to balancing increased security with maintaining a positive and welcoming learning environment. Dr. Fey says these efforts are about creating structure, not barriers, so all students can focus on learning in an environment where they feel safe, respected, and supported. Dr. Fey says the district also knows it has inconsistencies in safety measures, and is taking steps to address this. The district will be closely monitoring a variety of indicators to assess the effectiveness of these changes, including tracking attendance and referrals. Campus leaders will continue to review feedback from students, staff, and families to make adjustments to strengthen the district's approach without compromising the positive culture it is building in its schools. PREVIOUS STORY: Killeen ISD supports positive and safe return from Spring Break As of March 24, the district has also launched a new safety tip line at 254-336-8989 so families have another way to bring concerns if they feel something hasn't been addressed. Parents are still encouraged to report issues directly to their campus or submit concerns through Dr. Fey says Monday. March 24 reflected what is possible when the district works together to create the right environment for learning. The focus remains on ensuring every Killeen ISD campus is a safe, respectful, and supportive place for all students to learn and grow. The previous statement comes after a stabbing at Roy J. Middle School earlier this month. Students will return from Spring Break on Tuesday, March 25. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
