Pirates OF Tommy Pham suspended 1 game for fan interaction
April 25 - Major League Baseball suspended Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount Friday for what the league called "inappropriate actions towards fans."
Pham's transgression occurred Wednesday when the Pirates were playing at the Los Angeles Angels. Cameras caught him making a vulgar hand gesture toward Angels fans in the left field seats.
Pham is appealing the suspension and will be available Friday when the Pirates open a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 23 games in his first season with the Pirates, the veteran outfielder is batting .184 with three doubles and six RBIs. He's made 19 starts in left field for Pittsburgh.
Pham is a career .256 hitter currently playing for his 10th major league club and his eighth in the past four years. His next hit will be the 1,000th of his career.

Twins claim LHP Joey Wentz off waivers from Pirates
June 11 - The Minnesota Twins claimed left-hander Joey Wentz off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. Wentz, 27, went 2-1 this season with a 4.15 ERA in 19 relief appearances with the Pirates. A first-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2016, Wentz is 8-18 with a 5.40 ERA 97 games (26 starts) with the Detroit Tigers (2022-24) and Pirates (2024-25). In a corresponding move, right-hander Pablo Lopez was transferred to the 60-day injured list after being placed on the 15-day IL last Thursday with a grade 2 strain of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder. Lopez, 29, is 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 11 starts this season. Outfielder, co-owned by Jayson Werth, Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing and trainer Wesley Ward, was second favourite for the Norfolk Stakes after making a stunning debut in which he scored by seven lengths. Werth played as an outfielder for many top teams during a 15 year career in Major League Baseball, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals, and was looking forward to having his first runner at the meeting. During a three year spell with the Philadelphia Phillies, he played a pivotal role in the team's defeat of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2008 World Series. Since he launched his own racing operation, Two Eight Racing, Werth has enjoyed big race success with Dornoch, who captured the 2024 Belmont Stakes. Ward, who has saddled 12 Royal Ascot winners, had identified Outfielder as his number one pick for the royal meeting, describing the colt as 'very quick, very smart and a highly intelligent colt.' He added: 'Jayson Werth is a big name in baseball and Outfielder was his position and I chose the name and cleared it with Kia and when I told Jayson as a surprise, he was elated the horse was named after him.' However, Outfielder was ruled out after a workout at Keeneland with Ward telling the TDN the colt had been sidelined by 'a bit of a shin issue.' The five day Royal Ascot meeting, which starts on Tuesday, has suffered a number of withdrawals of its biggest names in recent days. On Tuesday Irish Champion Stakes winner Economics was ruled out of the the £1 million Prince of Wales's Stakes after pulling a muscle. He joined a list which already included Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Lake Victoria, who had been favourite for the Coronation Stakes, and last year's winner of the fillies' Group 1 Porta Fortuna who will be out until the second half of the season. Lake Victoria's trainer Aidan O'Brien has also been forced to scratched his top two-year-old challenger Albert Einstein as well as retiring Kyprios the two-time Ascot Gold Cup winner.
