Early breastfeeding vital for mother, child: SVIMS Director
Tirupati: Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) Dr RV Kumar underlined that breast milk is like nectar for infants. He was speaking at an awareness event held as part of World Breastfeeding Week on Monday. Addressing the gathering at the joint programme organised by the Departments of Paediatrics and Gynaecology at SVIMS, Dr Kumar stated that mothers should breastfeed their babies as early as possible after birth. He highlighted that breast milk is rich in essential nutrients and offers immense health benefits to both mother and child. 'Breast milk is not only the first natural vaccine for infants but also helps in building lifelong immunity and emotional bonding. Early initiation of breastfeeding can significantly reduce neonatal mortality,' he stated. Dr Puneeth, Head of the Paediatrics Department, pointed out that awareness alone is not enough. There must be systemic supportfor breastfeeding mothers, especially in workplaces. Maternity leave policies and breastfeeding-friendly environments are crucial to ensure that mothers can continue nursing their babies. Dr R Pravallika Sudharani, Head of the Gynaecology Department, explained the importance of colostrum — the first milk produced after delivery. 'This thick, yellowish milk is packed with antibodies, vitamins, and nutrients. It is the baby's first shield against infections and should never be skipped,' she stressed. As part of the weeklong celebrations, a poster presentation competition was conducted. MBBS and nursing students who won the competition were awarded certificates by Dr Kumar. Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women (SPMC-W) Principal Dr Usha Kalawat and other faculty were present.

Awareness prog on hepatitis held at Medicover Hospital
Karimnagar: Medicover surgical gastroenterologist Dr. Dilip Reddy said that liver diseases can be eliminated only by increasing awareness about hepatitis. On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, an awareness programme on hepatitis was organised at the local Vageshwari Degree and PG College on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dilip Reddy said that hepatitis viruses attack the liver, which performs more than 500 vital functions in our body. Hepatitis is a liver disease. Its main types are M, B, C, D and E viruses and their effects range from low to fatal. They are spread through blood transfusion and sexual contact. Vaccines for hepatitis are available, and everyone should be aware of the vaccines and get them. Hepatitis can be eliminated if precautions are taken, he said. The programme, held under the aegis of Medicover Hospital Centre Head Gurram Kiran, was attended by Rajeshwari College Chairman BVR Gopal Reddy, Principal Satish Goud, Venkat Reddy, Vice Principal Ramana, Chaitanya, Hospital Marketing Manager Kota Karunakar, Dasari Chandrasekhar, Anil, and students.

IOCL donates medical equipment worth Rs 22 cr to SVIMS
Tirupati: TTD Chairman BR Naidu said that Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati is fast emerging as the best super specialty hospital in the country. Speaking after inaugurating advanced medical equipment at SVIMS on Thursday, he said that the TTD was committed to providing the best healthcare services to the poor, and to strengthen the hospital further, the TTD was allocating Rs 140 crore annually for its development and expansion. On the occasion, the Chairman inaugurated state-of-the-art MRI and CT scan equipment, which were provided with the support of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. IOCL donated medical equipment worth Rs 22.01 crore to SVIMS, a significant contribution towards enhancing the diagnostic and treatment facilities at the hospital. Among the donated equipment is a 3 Tesla MRI scanner, MAGNETOM Vida, costing Rs 14 crore, and a 4D CT Simulator System, SOMATOM used for radiotherapy planning, valued at Rs 8 crore. Speaking to the media, Naidu said that these latest technologies were being installed only in SVIMS, which is the largest super specialty hospital in the Rayalaseema region. The new machines are particularly beneficial for cancer patients, as they help detect tumours with precision and without side effects. The equipment aids in identifying brain disorders and locating cancer growths, while also determining the dosage required for various organs during cancer treatment. Naidu mentioned that these facilities will help provide better treatment to over 2.5 lakh poor patients every year at a minimal cost. IOCL Marketing Director Satish Kumar, who was present at the event, said that their organisation was proud to support SVIMS as part of their social service programmes. He assured that IOCL would continue to participate in such service-oriented initiatives in the future. SVIMS Director Dr RV Kumar stated that under TTD's management, the hospital was offering top-class healthcare free of cost to the poor, while also providing high-quality medical education to students at Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women. TUDA Chairman and TTD Board Member C Divakar Reddy, IOCL Executive Director (HR) Mukesh Rajan, SVIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Ram, Radiology Department Head Dr Vijaya Lakshmi, IOCL representatives Dattatreya, Badrinath, and several other dignitaries were present.
