BWSSB to up sewage treatment capacity by 470 MLD in 26 new STPs by year-end
The Bangalore Water Treatment and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is working towards adding 470 MLD capacity to treat sewage in 26 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) by the end of 2025.
This would mean an addition of around 35% sewage treatment capacity to the existing 1,348.5 MLD capacity in 34 STPs, and take the city's treatment capacity to 1,818.5 MLD. The biggest of them all is coming at the Vrishabhavathi Valley, Mysuru Road, with a capacity of 150 MLD, followed by STPs at Hebbal and Horamavu of 60 MLD capacity each. Significantly, 14 of these new STPs with a combined capacity of 124 MLD are coming up in the 110 villages which are getting new water connections and Underground Drainage (UGD) lines.
'We are working towards completing these ongoing projects by December 2025. Many of the STPs in the 110 villages will be completed much before that as well,' said V. Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman, BWSSB. 'Once these STPs are commissioned, our capacity to treat sewage will go up significantly. We are also investing in tertiary treatment of this water to ensure its use in the city for non-drinking purposes and filling lakes. This way we will conserve a lot of water,' he added.
However, there is not enough demand for treated water from the existing STPs itself. Sources said the demand for treated water has fallen compared to the summer of 2024, when there was a severe water crisis.
Gap in treatment capacity still remains
The city currently has infrastructure to draw up to 2,220 MLD water from the Cauvery river, of which around 1,800 MLD is being drawn. This is expected to go up as more new connections are given under the Cauvery V Stage. In addition, the usage of groundwateris tough to quantify, which means thateven with these 26 new STPs (adding to a total treatment capacity of 1,818.5 MLD), there will still be a big gap in the city's treatment capacity.
A survey taken up by the board after laying 1,538 km long UGD lines and building 14 STPs at a cost of ₹925 crore in 110 villages, shows that these areas still need over 400 km of UGD lines and 9 more STPs, which is estimated to cost around ₹850 crore. The board is expecting to take up these works under the World Bank's Karnataka Water Security and Resilience Programme, under which the international agency is giving a loan of ₹3,500 crore, and BWSSB is expected to get over ₹1,000 crore.

Door-to-door survey to compile data of persons with disabilities begins in Salem district
Work has begun to compile data of all persons with disabilities in Salem district to ensure doorstep delivery of welfare benefits, said Collector R. Brindha Devi here on Wednesday. Addressing the media after inspecting the door-to-door survey at Kannankurichi, she said the State government was implementing the TN Rights Project, funded by the World Bank, through which benefits of welfare schemes are delivered directly to the homes of persons with disabilities. She added that the government has initiated steps across all districts to visit every household, identify all categories of persons with disabilities, and create a comprehensive social data platform with their complete details. This data collection drive began on June 2, 2025, and is currently under way, with field staff visiting homes in both urban and rural areas. The Collector said that when field staff visit homes, persons with disabilities may present documents such as their national identity card, Aadhaar card, bank passbook, and ration card for verification. In households without persons with disabilities, only the Aadhaar card and ration card can be shown. To ensure that no person with a disability is left out, a dedicated mobile application has been developed for this purpose, enabling accurate and complete data collection from every household. This initiative will ensure that all future assistance reaches persons with disabilities directly at their place of residence without delay. Iranian minister says Tehran backs Lebanon in its push to end Israel's military presence
BEIRUT: Iran's foreign minister said Tehran supports Lebanon's efforts to pressure Israel to end its military presence in parts of the country, including diplomatic moves "to expel the occupiers. Araghchi's visit comes after Iran's main Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, was weakened by the 14-month war with Israel that left much of the Iran-backed group's political and military leadership dead. Araghchi's visit is his first since October, which came at the height of the Israel-Hezbollah war that ended a month later with a US-brokered ceasefire. The war killed more than 4,000 in Lebanon, displaced over 1 million people and caused destruction that the World Bank said will coast USD 11 billion in reconstruction. Since the war ended, army commander Joseph Aoun was elected president and prominent jurist and diplomat Nawaf Salam became the country's prime minister. Both Aoun and Salam have repeatedly said that only the state will monopolize the use of weapons in Lebanon. The visit also comes after the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad was removed from power in December by insurgent group's opposed to Iran's influence in the region. Assad was one of Tehran's closest allies in the Arab world and his country was a main link for the flow of weapons from Iran to Hezbollah. Aoun told the visiting Iranian official during their meeting that Beirut wants "to strengthen relations from state to state with Iran." TN RIGHTS census to identify disabled begins in Erode, seven other districts
COIMBATORE: The TN RIGHTS project, functioning under the Department of Welfare for Differently-Abled Persons, has launched a Social Registry Enrollment (SRE) census to identify persons with disabilities (PWD) in eight additional districts, including Coimbatore, Erode and Salem in the western region. The state is implementing the TN RIGHTS project, supported by World Bank funds, to strengthen the differently-abled department's ability to promote inclusion, accessibility, and opportunities for people with disabilities. The focus of the project is to enhance social protection systems for them. As part of these efforts, the department is conducting area-wise SRE census to assist the government in improving the management of services for beneficiaries, and the drive was launched on Monday. This initiative is designed to collect data on disabled people across all blocks, town panchayats, municipalities and Coimbatore corporation. Volunteers will visit every household to identify PWDs. P Sundareswaran, project officer for TN RIGHTS in Coimbatore district, said they have appointed 200 volunteers who will meet targeted individuals in 20 blocks, with 12 blocks located in rural areas and 4 blocks covering corporation and municipality limits.
