Uttarakhand: Thousands take holy dip at Pushkar Kumbh in Keshav Prayag
Chamoli (Uttarakhand) [India], May 18 (ANI): A large number of people gathered on Sunday to take a holy dip at the Pushkar Kumbh, held at Keshav Prayag near Mana--the border village of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand--after a 12-year interval.
According to a release from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office (CMO), thousands of devotees have so far taken a holy bath on the banks of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers.
This year, the Kumbh is being held from May 14 to May 26. From dawn to dusk, the ghats of Keshav Prayag resonate with bhajans and kirtans.
This fair, organised every 12 years at Keshav Prayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Saraswati rivers, is associated with great saints like Maharishi Vedvyas, Ramanujacharya, and Madhvacharya, to whom most people from South India go for bathing.
Notably, most people from South India come to bathe during this occasion, the CMO said in a statement.
Uttarakhand's official said that the police and administration have ensured effective arrangements for devotees' safety, route management, and emergency services.
Earlier in the day, the doors of the sacred Rudranath temple, known as the fourth Kedar, reopened for devotees on Sunday morning after being closed during the winter months.
Located at over 10,000 feet in Chamoli district, the Shiva shrine of the Panchkedar group of temples draws lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad every year.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the reopening, saying, 'Today, the name of Rudra echoed once again in the peaceful valleys of the Himalayas!'He praised the religious significance of the event and emphasised the state's continued efforts to enhance the pilgrim experience.
The Rudranath temple, nestled deep in the Garhwal Himalayas, holds great importance among the Panch Kedar temples.
The shrine had remained closed during the harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather.
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government said on Saturday that the helicopter services for the Char Dham Yatra have resumed and are running smoothly.
The Char Dham Yatra 2025 officially began on April 30 with the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham on Akshaya Tritiya amid Vedic chants and rituals. The doors of Kedarnath Dham were opened on May 2, and those of Badrinath on May 4. (ANI)

Karachi: 32 mild tremors recorded since June 1, says chief meteorologist
Karachi [Pakistan], June 8 (ANI): The port city has been experiencing a series of mild earthquakes for over a week, with 32 tremors recorded since June 1, Geo News reported, citing Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari's statement. According to Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari, the earthquakes had magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 3.6 on the Richter scale. The most recent tremor, recorded on Friday at 8:32 am, had a magnitude of 1.5. The earthquakes have been reported from various areas, including Quaidabad, Gadap, Malir, DHA, and Korangi. The depth of the tremors varied from 2 km to 188 km, as per Geo News. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has confirmed the tremors, with the first recorded earthquake having a magnitude of 2.7 and a depth of 2 km, centered around 20 km south of the defense area. Meanwhile, the second quake was at a depth of 8km and had an epicentre around 7km northwest of Malir. According to Geo News, explaining the reasons behind such continuous tremors, Laghari had earlier told Geo News that the Landhi Fault Line had become active after several decades and is currently going through a normalisation phase. He had said that mild quakes may continue for up to a week due to the gradual release of energy, which helps prevent a major earthquake. The shallow depth of recent quakes makes them more noticeable. The official advised that buildings on fault lines should withstand tremors up to magnitude 6.0. He also noted that the cracks reported in some houses are likely due to structural issues. Another fault line near Thana Bula Khan is contributing to seismic activity. Notably, Pakistan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faults. As a result, earthquakes in Pakistan often occur and are destructive. Pakistan geologically overlaps both the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate on the Iranian Plateau. Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir provinces lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate in South Asia. In a statement, the Indian Air Force earlier said, 'In response to the devastating landslides in Sikkim, Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters rapidly launched Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Ops -- dropping relief supplies, inserting NDRF teams, and evacuating 33 stranded individuals, including two US nationals, from the remote Chaten region.' However, a prior operation to evacuate 113 stranded tourists from Lachen during the early hours had to be called off due to bad weather. Stage-I GRAP measures enforced in NCR as Delhi AQI plunges to 'poor'
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): In view of rising pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR with immediate effect. The action came after Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 209, which falls under the 'Poor' category. The decision was a comprehensive review by the CAQM Sub-Committee, which convened on Saturday and reviewed the air quality scenario in the region, as well as the IMD/IITM forecasts and air quality index of Delhi comprehensively. 'The AQI of Delhi has shown an increasing trend and has been recorded at 209 for 07.06.2025. Further, the forecast by IMD/IITM also predicts AQI to mainly remain in 'Poor' category in coming days,' said the statement from CAQM 'The Sub-Committee, accordingly, decides to invoke all actions under Stage-I ('Poor' Air Quality) of the extant GRAP in the entire NCR, with immediate effect,' it added. On May 18 following the subsequent decrease in the air pollution levels, the CAQM revoked the Stage-I measures of the Graded Response Action Plan across the entire NCR. An AQI rating is categorised as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and 401-500 (severe). (ANI)
