Kerala CM to inaugurate Economics, Statistics department surveys

South
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new surveys of the Department of Economics and Statistics here on August 25.
From 2025–26 onwards, Kerala will participate in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), both conducted nationwide by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Union Ministry of Statistics.
The government expects that participation in these surveys will help design and implement new schemes for the benefit of the state's youth and job seekers.
The PLFS provides vital statistics on the labour sector, human resources, and workforce, including indicators such as the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and the Unemployment Rate.
The ASUSE collects data on various economic features of enterprises in the unorganised non-agricultural sector engaged in production, trade, and services (excluding manufacturing). It covers aspects such as economic activities, employment generation, capital investment, and the use of digital technology in unorganised enterprises.
Until now, NSO survey data were available only at the state level. With Kerala's participation, district-level statistics will also become accessible. This is expected to provide more accurate data for project planning, enable a better assessment of changing labour markets, and support the preparation of estimates for calculating district-level income.

AAP hits out at Delhi, Central govts for failing to ensure security to students

New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today criticized the BJP-led central and local governments, accusing them of failing to ensure security in the national capital. Two schools and a college in Dwarka received bomb threats today, reigniting concerns over the safety of students in Delhi. Soon after this the AAP trained its guns on the BJP government. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal questioned the lack of progress in investigations, saying on social media, "Delhi schools are repeatedly targeted with such threats, yet not a single culprit has been caught, nor has any action been taken to date." He blamed the BJP's "four-engine" governments — referring to the party's rule at the Centre, Delhi Lieutenant Governor's office, Municipal Corporation, and neighboring states for the alleged law and order breakdown. Atishi, AAP leader and leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, echoed the concerns, saying, "Children and parents are living in fear, but BJP's governments have failed to provide them security." She also criticized Delhi Police that functions under the Union Home Ministry, for its inability to prevent recurring threats. Anurag Dhanda, AAP's national media in charge, claimed that despite persistent threats over the past two years, the police under Home Minister Amit Shah has been unable to do anything. Other party leaders, including Jasmine Shah and MCD leader of Opposition Ankush Narang, highlighted the prolonged nature of the issue, with Narang calling the BJP's governance in Delhi a "complete failure."

India's jobless rate eases in July, but gender and urban gaps persist

New Delhi: India's unemployment rate for those aged 15 years and above eased to 5.2% in July from 5.6% in June, offering modest relief in an uneven labour market. The improvement was driven by rural areas, where unemployment fell to 4.4% in July from 4.9% a month earlier, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released on Monday. In contrast, urban unemployment inched up to 7.2% from 7.1%, underscoring persistent strain in city labour markets, data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation showed. Women remained disproportionately affected, though trends diverged across regions. In urban India, unemployment among women declined to 8.7% in July from 9.1% in June, even as joblessness among men rose to 6.7% from 6.4%. In rural areas, unemployment eased for both men and women, to 3.9% from 4.4%. 'In terms of employment status, self-employment dominated in rural areas, while regular wage/salaried employment was predominant in urban areas,' the survey said. The agriculture sector engaged the majority of rural workers, while the tertiary or service sector was the largest source of employment in urban areas, it said. On average, 564 million people aged 15 years and above were employed in the country during the April-June quarter. Of them, 397 million were men and 167 million were women. The latest employment data underscore the dual challenge facing India's labour market: robust male participation coupled with persistently low female participation, and higher engagement in rural areas than in cities, a pattern that continues to weigh on the country's employment landscape. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) showed only marginal gains and continued to highlight deep structural imbalances. Overall LFPR in July rose to 54.9% from 54.2% in June. Male labour force participation held steady at 77.1%, while female participation edged up to 33.3% from 32%. Rural LFPR remained stronger at 56.9% against 50.7% in cities. Among youth aged 15-29 years, participation was especially weak, with only about one in five women active in the labour force in either rural or urban India. The worker population ratio (WPR), which tracks the share of people employed, mirrored these divides. In July, the WPR for those aged 15 and above was 52%, with men at 73% and women at just 31.6%. Rural workers fared better than their urban counterparts, at 54.4% versus 47%. Young women were particularly under-represented, as only 17.6% of those aged 15-29 were employed nationwide. The statistics ministry said the findings were based on an extensive household survey. In July, 7,519 first-stage units (FSUs) were surveyed nationwide, spanning 89,505 households and 379,222 individuals, split across rural and urban areas. FSUs are the primary units selected for sampling in a multi-stage survey design. The ministry has revamped the PLFS framework to provide timelier data. Starting with the April bulletin, the ministry began releasing monthly estimates of key labour market indicators, LFPR, WPR, and unemployment rate at the all-India level using the current weekly status approach. The number of households to be surveyed within a selected FSU was increased from eight to 12, it added.

Ukrainian President Zelensky says Russian war machine's overnight strikes display Kremlin's true intentions

Kyiv, Aug 18 (UNI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amidst the ongoing Russian military action and his arrival in Washington DC asked Moscow to stop, stating that the Kremlin's overnight strikes were 'demonstrative' of Russia's true intentions and showcased its 'cynical' position on war, reports The Guardian. Stating that Moscow's military campaign has left swathes of areas destroyed and many dead, Zelensky said, 'And at this very moment, the Russians are attacking Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, the Sumy region and Odesa, destroying residential buildings and our civilian infrastructure.' Claiming that Russian troops were going out of their way and 'deliberately killing people, particularly children', the Ukrainia President said, 'seven people have been killed as a result of the drone strike in Kharkiv, the youngest being a girl who is only a year and a half old, and dozens have been injured, including children.' 'In Zaporizhzhia, missile strikes injured 20 people and killed three. My condolences go out to all of the victims' families and loved ones,' he added. 'There was also a deliberate Russian strike on an energy facility in Odesa owned by an Azerbaijani company, implying that it was an attack not only on us but also on our relations and energy security.' He noted that the attacks are going while he is in the US to meet with President Donald Trump. 'They are aware that a meeting is taking place today in Washington that will address the end of the war. We will have a discussion with President Trump about key issues,' he explained. 'Along with Ukraine, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Union, and Nato will participate in the conversation. Everyone seeks dignified peace and true security.' Berating the Kremlin, Zelensky said that the Russian 'war machine' will continue to kill and destroy in its mission to pressure Ukraine, Europe, and humiliate all attempts at diplomacy. UNI ANV SS
