Kerala CM to inaugurate Economics, Statistics department surveys

South Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new surveys of the Department of Economics and Statistics here on August 25. From 2025–26 onwards, Kerala will participate in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE), both conducted nationwide by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Union Ministry of Statistics. The government expects that participation in these surveys will help design and implement new schemes for the benefit of the state's youth and job seekers. The PLFS provides vital statistics on the labour sector, human resources, and workforce, including indicators such as the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and the Unemployment Rate. The ASUSE collects data on various economic features of enterprises in the unorganised non-agricultural sector engaged in production, trade, and services (excluding manufacturing). It covers aspects such as economic activities, employment generation, capital investment, and the use of digital technology in unorganised enterprises. Until now, NSO survey data were available only at the state level. With Kerala's participation, district-level statistics will also become accessible. This is expected to provide more accurate data for project planning, enable a better assessment of changing labour markets, and support the preparation of estimates for calculating district-level income. DMK government open about statistics and data: Deputy Chief Minister

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Chennai on Monday that while some governments might hesitate or refuse to release statistics and data, the DMK government was open about them and had kept them in the public domain. It provided statistics to the people by undertaking many surveys, he added. Speaking at the 19th National Statistics Day celebrations, he said the DMK government was open about its statistics and data, he said: 'Some governments would hide certain statistics and hesitate to release them. Those statistics may not be favourable to the government. So, they may hide it.' When statistics and data were hidden, researchers worked on social conditions and policy-makers will not get to know the reality, Mr. Udhayanidhi contended. 'But, as far as our government is concerned, we have complete trust in our programmes and actions. That is why we keep all our data in the public domain. Even if there is a dip in the programmes, when it is pointed out, we are willing to rectify things.' A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Department of Economics and Statistics and the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation on imparting training to candidates under the Naan Mudhalvan programme. Mr. Udhyanidhi also handed over prizes to winners who emerged victorious in the State and district-level competitions. State Planning Commission's Executive Vice-Chairperson J. Jeyaranjan and senior officials were present at the function.

Former MP flags data gaps in ready reckoner of government

Former MP and Puducherry Maanila Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (PMMMK) president M. Ramadass has said that the new edition of the document 'Puducherry at a Glance 2024' was lacking in crucial data and demographic facets pertaining to the Union Territory. In a statement, Mr. Ramadass said the compilation released by the Chief Minister recently did not, for instance, have any data for 2004-2005. The statistics in the brochure relate to the year 2023-24 and previous years. The demographic information for the year 2024 is that of 2011 data, agricultural data of 2015 and the State income data of 2022-23. 'It is inappropriate for the publication of 2024 to state the population of Puducherry and other demographic facets in terms of 2011 data,' he said. Although no census was undertaken after 2011, the population of 2024 should have been projected through growth rate approach and all the demographic variables such as total population, men, women, children, old age composition, rural - urban population, Scheduled Caste population etc., should have been presented, he said. The PMMMK founder felt that the Department of Economics and Statistics should have attempted to construct the Human Development Index of Puducherry on the basis of the methodology evolved by the Government of India. The environmental data is also conspicuous by its absence. Puducherry is extensively affected by pollution of air, water, noise and traffic and there are proven methods of measuring them. Mr. Ramadass also suggested that the State Domestic Product (SDP) and per capita income, the barometers of development, should have been presented with better insights. The component-wise sources of SDP should have been furnished instead of confining only to primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. Further, the current price State income and per capita income should be shown at constant prices also, so as to estimate the real growth sans inflation. For assessing the regional disparities in growth, region-wise SDP data should also be given. In the case of agriculture, details of productivity, crop intensity, wages, disparities in region-wise distribution of land should be provided. The publication may prove more utilitarian if the inadequacies or data gaps on a range of critical indicators are rectified. The respective departments should initiate necessary action in this regard and present the data in the next publication, he said.
