DMK government open about statistics and data: Deputy Chief Minister
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Chennai on Monday that while some governments might hesitate or refuse to release statistics and data, the DMK government was open about them and had kept them in the public domain. It provided statistics to the people by undertaking many surveys, he added.
Speaking at the 19th National Statistics Day celebrations, he said the DMK government was open about its statistics and data, he said: 'Some governments would hide certain statistics and hesitate to release them. Those statistics may not be favourable to the government. So, they may hide it.'
When statistics and data were hidden, researchers worked on social conditions and policy-makers will not get to know the reality, Mr. Udhayanidhi contended. 'But, as far as our government is concerned, we have complete trust in our programmes and actions. That is why we keep all our data in the public domain. Even if there is a dip in the programmes, when it is pointed out, we are willing to rectify things.'
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Department of Economics and Statistics and the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation on imparting training to candidates under the Naan Mudhalvan programme. Mr. Udhyanidhi also handed over prizes to winners who emerged victorious in the State and district-level competitions. State Planning Commission's Executive Vice-Chairperson J. Jeyaranjan and senior officials were present at the function.

In message to BJP, EPS says AIADMK will form government as ‘single largest party'
CHENNAI: Desisting from directly responding to Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah's recent remarks that Tamil Nadu will have an NDA coalition government in 2026 led by the AIADMK, leader of the opposition and AIADMK's general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said that the party will win 'more seats' and form government as the 'single largest party'. Addressing a party meeting at Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district on Sunday night, he further said no one would be able to 'swallow' the AIADMK as alleged by the DMK. The idea of a coalition government has been a sticking point in the AIADMK-BJP alliance right from the day it was announced by Shah in Chennai on April 11, when he said that the alliance will win the 2026 Assembly election and form a coalition government. As this did not go down well with AIADMK's rank and file since Tamil Nadu has never had a coalition government, Palaniswami, who maintained silence initially, told the media a few days later that Shah's words were misinterpreted. However, the issue has cropped up again as Shah, in a recent interview to a Tamil media outlet, clearly said that there will be coalition government in 2026 in TN and that the BJP will be a part of it. Parties indulging in wordplay on HM's coalition govt remarks, says AIADMK While a few senior AIADMK leaders expressed disagreement with Shah's remarks, Palaniswami had not reacted directly to him until now. On Sunday, his remarks of AIADMK forming the government as the 'single largest party' came when he was attacking the ruling DMK for its alleged governance failure and blaming it for being scared of the AIADMK-BJP alliance. Political analyst Tharasu Shyam said Palaniswami's remarks indicated that the party would contest in a sizeable number of seats, say around 150, with the intention of securing a majority on its own.

"The Dravidian model govt will punish perpetrators of crime incidents irrespective of whether the person is a rowdy, a politician or a policeman," he said. Meanwhile, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran posed a series of questions to the state govt on the custodial death. "If police harassment was not the reason for Ajith Kumar 's death, then why should the six policemen be suspended? Even after admitting that it was a murder, why has a murder case not been registered against those responsible for Ajith Kumar's death? Why were they not arrested," Nainar asked in a social media post. He also questioned the police for not producing Ajith Kumar before a magistrate within 24 hours and why he was not taken to the hospital immediately after he fainted. "Is it true that the police handed over the body of Ajith Kumar to a private hospital in Madurai for autopsy as Tiruppuvanam and Manamadurai GHs refused to examine Ajith Kumar because he was brought four hours late and under suspicious circumstances," Nainar asked. DMK govt came under criticism of its allies too. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai on X asked policemen to behave responsibly. Condemning the custodial death, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said custodial deaths are recurring despite warnings. CPM state president P Shanmugam demanded the state govt to provide relief to Ajith's family and to provide govt job for a person in Ajith's family. Madurai: Five of the policemen suspended from Thiruppuvanam police station for the custodial death have been arrested on Monday night. They were booked for murder. A statement from the govt said that soon after the autopsy report of the custodial death victim Ajith Kumar was submitted to the govt, the action was taken without any delay. "The govt has acted in a transparent and unbiased manner. Compared to the past, custodial death in the last five years have been reduced. During such events, stern and immediate action has been taken," said the statement. TNN

He stressed the need for institutional capacity building, too. Addressing the 19th National Statistics Day here, Ahuja said the system would also help in identifying the areas of shortfall and the way forward. Bhubaneswar, Jun 30 (PTI) Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja on Monday batted for a modern statistical system to measure the socio-economic progress of the state. Speaking on the occasion, Development Commissioner Anu Garg advised the officials concerned to develop the recommended statistical system, which would help in effective monitoring of the goals and targets set in the 'vision document' for a 'Viksit Odisha – 2036 and 2047'. Citing the example of the 'Subhadra' scheme, she said the state government has been emphasising the use of data and, in the process, it has prepared a robust database that may be used in implementation of other beneficiary-oriented programmes. Ashish Kumar, former director-general, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, highlighted the role of the National Statistical Office (NSO) in conducting sample surveys to provide data at regular intervals for the unorganised sectors of the economy.
