Chandigarh: DAV College faculty put on notice over disability harassment complaint by asst prof
The commissioner's office, acting under provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, has directed all four to submit their replies by August 20.
The notice states that prima facie offences under Sections 89 and 92 of the Act appear to have been committed. Proceedings in the case are scheduled to begin on August 25.
The complainant, who has 50% permanent locomotor disability, has alleged repeated manhandling, harassment, blackmail, verbal abuse and discrimination by the three faculty members, who are from the mathematics, chemistry and commerce departments.
The complaint cites multiple incidents between January 2023 and May 2025.
According to the complaint, repeated appeals to college authorities since 2023 yielded no effective action, prompting escalation to the state commissioner.

Sambhal court orders SP MP to raze illegal structure within 30 days
A sub-divisional magistrate court in Sambhal on Tuesday ordered Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq to demolish an alleged unauthorised structure within 30 days, measuring 1 metre deep and 14 metres long, built outside his residence. The administration has warned that bulldozers will be used if the directive is ignored. Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Vikas Chandra said the order reinforced that legal provisions apply to all. 'If anyone works outside the law, action will be taken against them,' he stated. The matter began on December 5, 2023, when the first notice was issued. Despite earlier fines of ₹500 and ₹1,000 for the same violation, Barq did not submit a revised building plan. Over the past eight months, the court scheduled more than 20 hearings, but no map or satisfactory reply was provided. Hearings were conducted on December 12, 14, and 27, followed by a third notice on December 28. Deadlines were extended to January 16, 23, and 30. From February to April, the MP sought repeated extensions, even after multiple warnings and two fines. The SDM's office said proceedings were repeatedly stalled at the request of his legal team. In a separate matter earlier this June, Barq deposited ₹6 lakh with the electricity department as per an Allahabad high court order in an alleged electricity theft case. The payment led to the restoration of electricity to his residence in Deepa Sarai, ending a legal dispute that also began in December 2023.

ABVP conducts rally against drug abuse in Mysuru
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) conducted a rally in the city to create awareness against drug abuse, on Tuesday. It has urged the Mysuru District Police to take stringent legal action to curb the illegal manufacture, sale, and use of narcotic substances in the city and surrounding areas. Hundreds of ABVP activists gathered near the Gun House circle carrying placards stating 'say no to drugs', and sought the strict implementation of the COTPA Act. In a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, ABVP Secretary H.K. Praveen expressed concern over the recent bust of a large-scale drug manufacturing unit in Mysuru, calling it a serious wake-up call. Mr. Praveen said that synthetic drug production and consumption were spreading from cities to rural areas, trapping thousands of youth and making them addicted to it. At a time when the youth have to be engaged in the task of nation building as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda, they were engaged in drug abuse, which is dissipating their energy and talent, according to ABVP. Citing data from recent police operations, ABVP noted that within just four days, 189 out of 541 individuals tested were found to be drug users, underscoring the extent of the problem among young people. The memorandum also highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse on students, women, and society at large, including academic decline, behavioural issues, accidents, crime, and severe health consequences. The student body demanded strict enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), enhanced intelligence-gathering, and severe punishment for drug peddlers, manufacturers, and their backers, and pledged to intensify anti-drug awareness under the 'Nasha Mukt Campus' campaign, covering colleges across Karnataka.
