ABVP conducts rally against drug abuse in Mysuru
It has urged the Mysuru District Police to take stringent legal action to curb the illegal manufacture, sale, and use of narcotic substances in the city and surrounding areas. Hundreds of ABVP activists gathered near the Gun House circle carrying placards stating 'say no to drugs', and sought the strict implementation of the COTPA Act.
In a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, ABVP Secretary H.K. Praveen expressed concern over the recent bust of a large-scale drug manufacturing unit in Mysuru, calling it a serious wake-up call.
Mr. Praveen said that synthetic drug production and consumption were spreading from cities to rural areas, trapping thousands of youth and making them addicted to it.
At a time when the youth have to be engaged in the task of nation building as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda, they were engaged in drug abuse, which is dissipating their energy and talent, according to ABVP.
Citing data from recent police operations, ABVP noted that within just four days, 189 out of 541 individuals tested were found to be drug users, underscoring the extent of the problem among young people.
The memorandum also highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse on students, women, and society at large, including academic decline, behavioural issues, accidents, crime, and severe health consequences.
The student body demanded strict enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), enhanced intelligence-gathering, and severe punishment for drug peddlers, manufacturers, and their backers, and pledged to intensify anti-drug awareness under the 'Nasha Mukt Campus' campaign, covering colleges across Karnataka.

ED files money laundering case against Al Kabeer Exports over illegal waste disposal violations
HYDERABAD: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Hyderabad Zonal Office, has filed a prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, against Al Kabeer Exports and its director. The Special PMLA Court in Hyderabad took cognisance of the complaint on August 5. Officials said the case originated from a 2017 complaint by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) before the Special Mobile Judicial First Class Magistrate, Sangareddy. The TSPCB alleged that the buffalo meat processing company violated waste disposal norms. Although permitted to generate and dispose of solid waste in compliance with TSPCB guidelines, the firm allegedly failed to follow prescribed treatment protocols, committing offences under Sections 24 and 43 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. The ED investigation found that hazardous meat waste was dumped in open areas, contaminating surface and groundwater in surrounding regions. The company allegedly generated Rs 61 lakh as 'proceeds of crime' from the offences, diverting the amount for purposes other than waste treatment. Earlier, the ED provisionally attached a fixed deposit of Rs 61 lakh belonging to the firm.

DUSU polls on Sept 18, Rs 1 lakh bond sparks protests
NEW DELHI: The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections will be held on September 18, with vote counting scheduled for the following day, the university announced on Wednesday. Voting for day classes will take place from 8:30 am to 1 pm, while evening class students will cast their votes between 3 pm and 7:30 pm. According to DU's notification, the last date to submit nomination papers—along with a Rs 500 annual fee and a Rs 1 lakh bond—is September 10 by 3 pm. Scrutiny of papers will follow the same day, with the final list of candidates out by September 11 at 5 pm. Nomination papers for DUSU posts must be submitted at the Conference Centre, North Campus, while those contesting for Central Council seats must file them at their respective colleges. The university's new guideline mandating a Rs 1 lakh bond has drawn sharp criticism from student bodies. NSUI leader and current DUSU president Ronak Khatri called the bond 'discriminatory,' arguing that it excludes students from lower-income backgrounds. ABVP's Delhi Secretary Sarthak Sharma echoed the sentiment, warning of mass protests if the rule isn't revoked. 'We've submitted a memorandum to the Registrar demanding a rollback,' he said. AISA national president Neha hinted at a possible Left alliance to counter the ABVP.
