Pollachi sexual assault case: Tamil Nadu politicians play shame-and-blame game
CHENNAI: Amid messages from political parties hailing the verdict of the Coimbatore Mahila Court in the 2019 Pollachi sexual assault case, the DMK and the AIADMK sparred over who should hang their 'head in shame' about the appalling crime that shook the conscience of Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin in his post on X said, 'Justice is done for a heinous crime committed by criminals, including an AIADMK functionary.' Taking a dig at the previous AIADMK regime, the CM said, 'Let the 'sirs' who tried to safeguard the gang of culprits, also comprising an AIADMK man, hang their heads in shame!'
In response, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said it was the previous AIADMK government that arrested the accused and ordered a CBI investigation. Asking the CM to not take credit for the verdict, the leader of the opposition reiterated his party's allegation that the ruling DMK tried to protect the accused in the 2024 Anna University sexual assault case.
'The AIADMK will expose the DMK when Palaniswami-led government comes to power in 2026. Then, it is certain that the DMK will hang its head in shame,' the party said in an 'X' post.

(File) India suspended the Indus Water Treaty after the heinous April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, and now the Indian government has devised a long-term strategy that will make Pakistan yearn for every single drop of water in the coming future. According to reports the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is committed to make Pakistan pay for the Pahalgam massacre, and plans are in place in to restrict water from the Indus, Sutlej and Beas rivers to the enemy country. How India plans to halt Indus water to Pakistan The Modi government has plans to connect the Indus river with the Ravi-Beas rivers by diverting the water to the Harike Barrage in Punjab through Sutlej river. The mega canal will be around 200 km long, and involves constructing as many as 12 large tunnels. Water running through these these tunnels will flow into the Indira Gandhi Canal, and a few others, including the Ganga Canal in Rajasthan, ultimately flowing into the Yamuna River. As per media reports, quoting sources, the expansion of the plan involves connecting these river streams to the Yamuna, and work is underway to increase the capacity of the Ganga Canal, remove silt and stop leakage along with Sirhind Feeder in Punjab, Rajasthan Feeder in Haryana and Indira Gandhi Canal. The 200 km canal will be built parallel to Harike Barrage, according to reports. Project will benefit multiple states Once the project is completed, several Indian states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, will be benefitted from the Indus waters, while the excess water will flow into the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. The project is expected to be completed within a span of two-three years, and will also help in reviving the Yamuna River in many places, officials said. Meanwhile, Pakistan has written four letters to India, pleading New Delhi to restore the Indus Water Treaty. However, India has clearly stated the treaty will continue to be abeyance till Pakistan takes visible, concrete action against terrorism.

Top priority of govt. to address public grievances, says Minister
Minister for Transport, Youth Services and Sports Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy on Saturday held a Praja Darbar at Boreddigari Palle in Chinnamandem mandal, Annamayya district. Addressing the villagers, Mr. Reddy said that resolving people's problems on a priority basis is the highlight of the TDP-led government. He alleged that residents of the Rayachoti Assembly constituency were hit by several hardships due to long pending issues during the previous YSRCP government, but they are happy now as the coalition government is addressing their issues. Mr. Reddy said that many complaints from the Annamayya district were regarding irregularities and land grabbing during the previous government. Such complaints are immediately being forwarded to the concerned officials for action, the Minister said. He said that he would be available to the public and have direct interaction with them to understand their concerns and directed the officials to resolve several appeals on the spot.
