Man found guilty over east London shooting of nine-year-old girl
The girl was hit in the head by one of six bullets fired by a man on a passing motorbike as she sat with her family in the Evin restaurant in Kingsland High Street, Hackney, on 29 May last year.
The gunman has not been caught, but jurors were told Javon Riley played a 'key role' before, during and after the shooting.
He carried out reconnaissance of the restaurant before the attack, scouted for potential targets and drove the gunman away in a stolen car, which was later found burnt out.
On Monday, Riley, 33, from Tottenham, north London, was found guilty of causing grievous harm with intent to the nine-year-old girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
The child was a victim of a bloody rivalry between Turkish gangs of north London, while three men who were sitting at a nearby table were also struck and injured, the Old Bailey was told.
Riley was also found guilty of attempting to murder Mustafa Kiziltan, 35, Kenan Aydogdu, 45 and Nasser Ali, 44.
The three men were said to be affiliated with the Hackney Turks organised crime gang, who had a rivalry with the Tottenham Turks, with whom Riley had links, the court heard.
The court was told that Aydogdu had been injured in a previous shooting.
The Old Bailey jury deliberated for six hours and three minutes to convict Riley by a majority of 10 to two.
Judge Mark Lucraft KC remanded Riley into custody to be sentenced on 12 September.
He told Riley to expect a lengthy prison sentence, saying: 'You have clearly taken part in a shooting which has led to four people being injured, one of them particularly seriously.'
The nine-year-old girl spent three months in hospital and will have lifelong physical and cognitive problems as the bullet remains lodged in her brain.
The three male victims received gunshot wounds to the arm, leg and thigh.
In a statement, the girl's mother said: 'In a single moment, the future we had imagined for our daughter was torn away.
'She was once an energetic, adventurous child – everything that celebrated movement, energy and life.
'Now, weakness on her left side means she can only watch from the sidelines, living with a titanium plate in her skull and a bullet still in her brain.
'As parents, we are shattered: emotionally, physically, mentally and financially.
'Each day brings new challenges, from her slower growth on one side to the emotional and mental scars that cannot be seen.'
During the three-week trial, Riley was repeatedly asked to identify the 'third party' who had recruited him for about £40,000.
He refused to name them or help to identify the gunman, claiming he feared for his life and those of his family.
Scotland Yard has offered a reward of up to £15,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest of and prosecution the man who fired the weapon.
The court heard that Jamaica-born Riley had a string of convictions dating back to 2008 including for possession of cannabis and cocaine, driving offences and having an offensive weapon and a blade in his car.

US woman to be sentenced over failed assassination plot in Birmingham
A would-be assassin who flew to the UK only for her gun to jam during an assassination attempt while she was disguised in a niqab will be sentenced on Thursday. Aimee Betro, 45, was found guilty of conspiracy to murder, possessing a self-loading pistol and fraudulently evading the prohibition on importing ammunition after a three-week trial which ended last week. The graphic design and childhood education graduate tried to shoot Sikander Ali at point-blank range outside his home in Measham Grove, Yardley, Birmingham, shortly after 8pm on September 7 2019. Judge Simon Drew KC will sentence Betro, who is originally from West Allis in Wisconsin but lived in Armenia until earlier this year, at Birmingham Crown Court. Jurors at her trial heard she took part in a plot orchestrated by co-conspirators Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nabil Nazir, 31, who were sentenced for their part last year, following a feud with Mr Ali's father, Aslat Mahumad. Nazir was jailed for 32 years in November 2024 for offences including conspiracy to murder while Aslam was sentenced to 10 years. Prosecution counsel Tom Walkling KC said 'revenge was the motive' after Nazir and Aslam were injured during disorder at Mr Mahumad's clothing boutique in Birmingham in July 2018, which led them to conspire to have someone kill him or a member of his family. Mr Walkling told Betro's trial that she met Nazir, who lived in Derby, on a dating app in late 2018 and then communicated with him via Snapchat before flying to the UK on Christmas Day of the same year. She told the court she slept with Nazir at an Airbnb in London before returning to the US in January 2019. Records show Betro landed at Manchester Airport on a flight from Atlanta on August 22 2019, two weeks before the attempted killing of Mr Ali. Betro was caught on CCTV at and near the scene of the failed attempt to shoot Mr Ali, who fled in his car after the gun jammed. Security camera footage also captured her return to the scene hours later, when she aimed three shots through the front windows of Mr Ali's family home. Betro told the court she flew into the UK to celebrate her 40th birthday and knew nothing of any shooting or murder plot by the time she returned to the US. She also attempted to explain away evidence against her by claiming the woman caught on CCTV wielding a gun and recorded booking taxis was 'another American woman' known to Nazir who had a similar voice and footwear.

Southport killer 'wins back television and DVD player perks in prison' after hurling boiling water at a guard as bosses 'bribe him to behave'
Southport triple killer Axel Rudakubana has won back privileges, including a TV and an enhanced weekly spending budget, amid claims guards are 'bribing' him to behave. It is understood the 19-year-old has been raised from 'basic' to 'standard' treatment just weeks after he allegedly threw boiling water at a guard at HMP Belmarsh in south east London. The incident, which is still under investigation by Met Police, is said to have involved Rudakubana boiling a kettle in his cell and throwing the scalding water through a hatch in May. Staff were alerted by the guard's screams and he was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. He was discharged after being treated for minor injuries. But now it appears Rudakubana has had some of his privileges returned, The Sun reported. Being elevated to 'standard' means the murderer can have more time out of his cell, as well as increased access to workshops, the library and the gym at the high security prison. He will have access to Freeview TV, a DVD player and will also see his weekly allowance rise from £5.50 a week to around £20. A source said the move was 'outrageous', adding: 'They are basically bribing him to behave — by saying we'll give you a telly and you can keep it if you don't attack anyone.' The 19-year-old triple murderer reportedly hurled boiling water at a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh (pictured) in Thamesmead, east London, where he is serving a life sentence Reform MP Richard Tice said: 'I'm appalled. It feels like he is being rewarded for bad behaviour.' Rudakubana is serving 52 years for killing Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, at a dance class in July last year. The incident at Belmarsh came as serious assaults on prison officers increased 19 per cent in a year according to Home Office figures.

Tragic new pictures of parents and two kids found shot to death in rural $660,000 home – with surviving toddler unharmed
DEVASTATING pictures have emerged of the parents and two kids who were shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide. The four family members were found dead in their New Hampshire home on Monday night, but a surviving toddler at the scene was left uninjured, police said. 8 8 8 8 Officials identified the dead family members as Ryan Long, 48, Emily Long, 34, and their son, Parker, 8, and daughter, Ryan, 6. State troopers arrived at the home at around 8:21 pm on Monday in response to a 911 call, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. The caller said several people were dead inside the house. Cops found four family members shot to death at the scene, with the toddler left unharmed. The surviving toddler is now safely with the family. The chief medical examiner is expected to perform autopsies on the family on Wednesday, the attorney general said. I think that's probably one of the more difficult things that they are trying to grasp, to understand how this came to be and to be able to be more definitive and to understand what the sequence of events was like inside that house." New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati The father, Ryan Long, worked as a school psychologist at the local Oyster River Middle School, according to his LinkedIn. Emily Long worked as the director of operations at a local restaurant called Wing-Itz, according to her LinkedIn. The family moved to the five-bedroom house, now worth over $660,000, in the town of Madbury in southeastern New Hampshire in 2020, online property records show. TRAGIC PHOTOS SHOW HAPPY FAMILY Neighbor Bevy Ketel told CBS affiliate WBZ-TV that she was shocked by news of the tragedy. 8 8 "It was a perfect family as far as we knew," Ketel told the outlet. "It's just shocking. We didn't see it coming." Ketel's shock is tragically supported by mom Emily Long's frequent activity on her Facebook account. Long often posted photos showing her happy young family and quickly growing children. Official full statement Attorney General John M. Formella, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall, and Madbury Police Department Chief Joseph McGann announce the identities of the four deceased individuals discovered in Madbury on Monday, August 18, 2025. Inside the home, troopers found the bodies of four family members: Emily Long (age 34), Ryan Long (age 48), son Parker Long (age 8), and daughter Ryan Long (age 6). A third child, a toddler, was found alive and suffered no physical injuries. Each of the deceased family members appears to have suffered gunshot wounds, and were pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives continue to investigate this event as a potential murder/suicide. Autopsies are scheduled to take place throughout the day on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord, NH. While the investigation is still ongoing, there is no known threat to the general public at this time. No additional releases of information are anticipated until after all autopsies have been conducted. Source: New Hampshire Attorney General In the aftermath of the killings, the heartbreaking photos reveal family outings, play time at home, and holiday weekends spent around New Hampshire. And friends were active in the comments, often posting about the sweet family moments and praising the children's poses. In one photo, the family poses with their dog at New Hampshire's oldest apple orchard in the fall in front of scarecrows with painted pumpkin heads. Another shows the family in their Easter Sunday best, standing in front of a large, open field as the children smile for the camera. A more recent photo posted just after Thanksgiving Day shows dad Ryan, tree saw and tarp in hand, with their three children, apparently on the hunt for a Christmas tree, giving no hint of the tragedy that would occur less than a year later. MOTIVE REMAINS A MYSTERY Police are still looking into the motive for the killings. "I think investigators still have probably more questions than they have answers," said Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati. He continued, "One of the biggest questions they have right now is motive. Why?" "And I think that's probably one of the more difficult things that they are trying to grasp, to understand how this came to be and to be able to be more definitive and to understand what the sequence of events was like inside that house." Agati didn't immediately return The U.S. Sun's request for comment about his recent claims about the dad Ryan Long's health. Investigators said there's no known threat to the public. Madbury is a small town with under 2,000 residents located about an hour and a half north of Boston. The area is just one town over from the University of New Hampshire. Footage of the scene obtained by ABC affiliate WMTW showed police going in and out of the house in the residential neighborhood. Drone video from NBC affiliate WPTZ showed the large, blue-colored house surrounded by police vehicles and officers. 8 8
