H-1B visa in-person interview mandate: How to prepare and key details to know
Announced on July 25, the latest decision reverses the February 18, 2025 policy. Besides tightening the eligibility criteria, it further limits applicants who can skip visa interviews and only provides exceptions for a few categories.
What does it mean for the H-1B visa category?
This non-immigrant visa category allows employers in the United States to hire foreign workers in speciality occupations.
After the latest changes, those applying under the H-1B visa category will no longer be broadly exempted from the requirement of in-person interviews. Whether applying for the first time or renewing an H-1B visa, the revised rules will require applicants to appear before a consular officer.
Ultimately, this could result in longer waiting periods and increased scrutiny. The decision rolls back the exemptions that were granted during the COVID-19 pandemic period, allowing several applications to skip the in-person interviews.

How to prepare for in-person interviews?
According to Boundless Immigration, the H-1B visa interview is held at the US Embassy or consulate in the home country of the applicant. The consular officer will take the interview to assess the applicant's qualifications, eligibility and intent.
During this process, the applicants must remain prepared for documentation review, background information, details regarding their employment as well as effective communication and English proficiency.
Some of the commonly asked questions during H-1B visa interviews include:
Educational background: Highest educational qualification, where and what did you study, how do your educational qualifications relate to the job offer and others.
Professional experience: Past working experience, how your experience prepares you for the new job role in the US and why you resigned from your last job.
Job details: Here, applicants must remain aware of their job responsibilities in the US, their new job title, salary, information regarding the employer and other details.
General questions: Applicants could be asked questions like: Why is their presence required in the US? Why do they wish to work in the country? Will they return to their home country after working in the US?

Aided-school teachers allege foul play in appointment of PG teachers
Teachers of a government-aided school in Madurai district, through a petition to Collector and Chief Educational Officer, have expressed their grievances about new regulations and a suspected foul play by school administration in appointing teachers. A schoolteacher from the PKN Boys Higher Secondary School in Tirumangalam, requesting anonymity, alleged that the teachers were coerced by the school administration into giving a letter stating that they did not want promotions. 'In government-aided schools like ours, teachers who meet the required educational qualifications for vacant posts left by retiring teachers in the school will be promoted,' the teacher added. Currently, the school has vacant postgraduate teacher positions in English, Chemistry and Physics and in the ongoing academic year, a PG Tamil teacher was also retiring, they added. But, instead of promoting the two most senior and qualified teachers among them, the school's secretary had pressurised them to write a letter rejecting the promotion, they alleged. They noted that for the vacant positions, as they would not need to require Teachers Recruitment Board examinations for appointments, the school administration was directly recruiting through their own procedure, they stated. Alleging cash-for-job for appointment of PG teachers, the teachers said that they suspected a foul play in appointment. By stopping elevation of the existing teachers, the school administration thought they could take people from outside on their own will. Apart from this, a teacher said that in the recent two years, following the appointment of a new secretary, new rules and regulations were being implemented to curb the teachers' freedom. For instance, installation of CCTV cameras in classrooms and monitoring teachers' each and every move mentally restricted them from discharging their duties, the teacher added. Even a bit of deviation from what the school administration expected could attract disciplinary action against them, the teacher noted. Not only the teachers, but also the school administration, by keenly noticing the students' activities, imposed strict punishments. 'The school administration by informing parents for even minor mistakes mentally demotivated the students. The school strength which was over 2,300 has now come down to 1,700,' the teacher alleged. Lacking even basic gender sensitivity, the school administration directed all the women teachers to wear coats over their saris when on school campus. This could not be justified as teachers were well aware of what to wear and how to maintain a decorum, the teachers observed. By pressurising the teachers to wear over coats, the school administration had been taking an authoritarian position, they added. This would not only demotivate the teachers, but would also affect their mental health and the eventual loss would be to the students, they said. The school administration replying to the grievances raised by the teachers said it was due to the regulations imposed by the school to discipline them. The CCTV installation in classes and direction to wear coats were for their own welfare, said the administration. 'As it is a boys' school, we wanted the women teachers to maintain a dress code,' they added. With regard to coercion of staff to refuse promotion, they said that the teachers were only instructed about the offers and procedure, and the decision was up to theirs.

8th Pay Commission big update: What will the gross salary of Level-6 employees with basic pay, fitment factor, HRA, TA?
Representational Image 8th Pay Commission salary calculator: Millions of Central government employees are eagerly awaiting the announcement and the implementation of the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC), and many are wondering how much their net salaries will increase after the 8th CPC comes into effect. Level-6 (Grade Pay-4200) employees currently have a basic salary of Rs 35,400, here's how much increment they can expect after factoring in the fitment factor, allowances and deductions. How much salary will Level-6 employees get after 8th CPC? Akin to previous pay commission, the key to finding out your future salary is the fitment factor, which was 2.57 in the 7th Pay Commission, and based on estimates, will 1.92 for the 8th Pay Commission. Based on the fitment factor, the new basic pay for Level 6 central employees will be Rs 67,968, (current basic pay Rs 35,400 x 1.92 = Rs 67,968). So the basic pay of Level 6 employees will increase to nearly Rs 68,000, and various allowances will be added which will us the net monthly salary for this pay scale. Dearness Allowance (DA) will be reset to zero after the 8th Pay Commission is implemented as old inflation is adjusted in the basic pay itself, while House Rent Allowance (HRA) will be given to employees based on the cities, towns they reside in. For X-category cities like Delhi and Mumbai, employees can expect up to 30% HRA of the new basic pay, while Travel Allowance (TA) for major cities will be Rs 3,600, based on the current calculations. What will be the net salary? Based on the above calculations and basic pay of Rs 67,968, the monthly gross salary of Level-6 employees will be Rs 91,958, after adding Rs 20,390 HRA and Rs 3,600 TA. However, the in-hand salary of net monthly salary will not be same and can only be calculated after factoring in the deductions. NPS deduction equals 10% of your basic pay + DA, which translated to Rs 6,797 for Level 6 employees, while the estimated CGHS Deduction will be Rs 450, so your estimated net salary will be Rs 84,711 per month (Rs 91,958 – Rs 7,247). When will 8th Pay Commission be implemented? If we go by the implementation of previous pay commissions, it usually takes about 18 to 24 months for the government to implement the recommendations. Thus, its unlikely that 8th Pay Commission would be implemented before mid-2027. Currently, 7th Pay Commission recommendations are in force, and will remain so till December 2025. A new pay commission is constituted every 10 years which tenders suggestions for revision of salary and pension of central government employees and pensioners in wake of the prevailing economic scenario in the country. The 8th Pay Commission was announced by the Union government in January this year.
