‘Move over or get pulled over': Illinois State Police reiterate no-tolerance policy
Commonly referred to as Scott's Law in Illinois after Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Scott Gillen, who was hit and killed while responding to a traffic accident 25 years ago.
'Every motorist is required to get over and slow down in the other lane upon approaching an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing,' said Sergeant Wes Matarelli. 'That could be a law enforcement vehicle, it could be a fire truck, it could be an ambulance, any EMS personnel.'
Vehicles the law applies to can be found under the Illinois Vehicle Code.
Matarelli explains why this is being broadcasted right now.
'For years and years we've been advocating this law, telling people to move over, slow down,' he said. 'This is nothing new. But we're still consistently getting in crashes, crashes that involve serious injuries to our first responders and our troopers. We're not changing the law. We're just stating that now we are going to be writing tickets, not warnings.'
Violators could be fined $250-$10,000, and if there is injury or death of another person, it's a felony and a possible driving suspension of up to two years.
Just this year, there have been five Move-Over crashes, four of which involved a trooper being injured.

Vehicle catches fire on I-90 in Rolling Meadows, Illinois
An SUV caught fire Saturday morning on Interstate 90 in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. It happened just before 7 a.m. on the outbound I-90 near Golf Road. The Illinois State Police said they closed down three left lanes as smoke poured from the SUV in the median. At one point, the flame's heat burst the tires. A person was also seen running away from the vehicle. No injuries were reported. State police did not say what caused the fire. Fire crews were able to put out the blaze, and all lanes reopened around 7:45 a.m. No further information was immediately available.

Illinois State Police trooper arrested on federal child pornography charges
An Illinois State Police trooper, who is also a youth hockey referee, was arrested this week on federal child pornography charges. Colin Gruenke, of Deerfield, is charged with one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, according to federal court records. According to the charges, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children first learned in September 2024 that someone on the social media platform Kik had used two accounts to upload images of child pornography. An investigation linked the user's email address to Gruenke, and after obtaining multiple search warrants, federal agents confronted him at Illinois State Police headquarters in Des Plaines. At the time, Gruenke was holding an iPhone in his hand, and agents seized it and found evidence of deleted images of child pornography, with some of the children appearing to be as young as 4 years old. Agents also executed a search warrant at his home, where they found a flash drive containing approximately 200 videos of child pornography, including numerous videos showing children being sexually abused by adults, including children as young as 10. Gruenke was arrested on Wednesday, and made his first court appearance the same day, and was ordered to remain in custody pending a detention hearing on Monday. As part of their investigation, federal authorities learned Gruenke plays in an adult hockey league in Northbrook, where he is also a youth hockey referee. Illinois State Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Gruenke's arrest.

Two officers shot in Gibson City, Suspect sought
Update: 8/10/2025 10:15 a.m. An email from Illinois State Police this morning indicated no updates were available. Mayor Dan Dickey of Gibson City released a statement to WCIA. 'We are very thankful for all of our police officers, especially those involved in the incident earlier Saturday morning. Our prayers go out to our officers who were wounded in the line of duty as well as their families as we pray for their speedy and full recovery. Yesterday's incident is a reminder to everyone that the police risk their lives each and every day to protect and serve each and every one of us. We appreciate the response and support of the GCPD, Ford County Sheriff's Department, the Illinois State Police and other agencies involved in the ongoing investigation and have full confidence that they will continue to keep our community safe. (WCIA) — Multiple Central Illinois fire response units were on the scene of a house fire early Saturday morning that started shortly after and at the same scene as where two officers were shot in Gibson City. The whereabouts of the suspect remain unknown. According to Gibson City Fire Chief Bruce Kallal, the Gibson City Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 3 a.m. to stand by for a structure fire with an unsecured scene at 146 W Ash Street. The department requested mutual aid from Sibley, Elliott and Melvin/Roberts due to what appeared to be a fully involved residential structure. Champaign Police issue safety reminders for drivers in school zones The Gibson City Fire Department then coordinated with law enforcement and were allowed to proceed into the scene a short time later. Along with its mutual aid partners, Gibson City Fire was able to complete extinguishment of the original house as well as the fire that extended into 142 W Ash Street. The original structure at 146 W Ash Street was deemed a total loss and the estimated damages for the house are $175,000. The residence at 142 W Ash Street had a detached garage which was also deemed a total loss, as well as some fire extension into the actual house. On this property, damages are estimated at $50,000. After extinguishment efforts were completed, Gibson City Fire teams assisted the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Illinois State Police with search and investigation of the original structure. Paxton Fire was then added for mutual aid during this operation for additional manpower. In total, there were approximately 30 firefighters at the scene as well as 14 apparatus. The scene was cleared by Gibson City Fire at 1:30 p.m. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing. This is a developing story. We will share updates as we learn more. Update at 3:35 p.m. GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois State Police is continuing its investigation into an incident where two officers were shot early Saturday morning in Gibson City. The suspect's whereabouts are currently unknown, and police are considering him 'armed and dangerous.' On Aug. 9 at approximately 2:31 a.m., officers from the Gibson City Police Department and the Ford County Sheriff's Department responded to the report of a naked man, identified as 70-year-old David D. Jordan of Gibson City. Jordan was walking outside in the 100 block of Ash Street. UPDATE: Two officers shot in Gibson City, State Police looking for suspect Upon attempting to make contact with Jordan at his residence, officers were met with gunfire. A Gibson City Police officer and a Ford County Sheriff's deputy were struck by the gunfire. Both were then transported to local hospitals and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Shortly after the shooting, the house caught fire. Additionally, Jordan was last seen at this residence, and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
