AIADMK govt. never hiked power tariff despite joining UDAY scheme: EPS
Mr. Palaniswami's reaction comes in the wake of charges made by Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa that the existing electricity tariff hike was due to the then AIADMK government joining the Central scheme way back in 2017. As a result, the State has to witness steady increase in power tariff under the scheme.
'We joined the scheme (UDAY) after the Centre fulfilled our two conditions, such as dropping the condition to increase the electricity tariff once in three months, and farmers should not be forced to fix electricity meters to assess total power consumption by pump sets used by them,' he said.
The AIADMK leader, who was here as part of his State-wide tour, said that despite joining the UDAY scheme, the AIADMK-led government never increased the electricity tariff till the party was in power in early 2021. On the other hand, the DMK government has consistently increased power tariffs for the past four years, confusing voters into thinking that the power tariff increase was due to the AIADMK, he said.
Highlighting lawlessness in the State with rising crime against women, children and senior citizens, Mr. Palaniswami blamed the DMK government for not allowing Tamil Nadu police to function in a free and fair manner. As a result, criminals have lost fear of police personnel and have dared to murder them, he alleged.
The former Chief Minister said that the arrest of Madurai Mayor Indrani's husband Pon Vasanth by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is investigating the multi-crore property tax scam of the Madurai Corporation reflects the level of corruption by DMK partymen in the State.

"Are They Maoists?" EPS Slams MK Stalin Over Action Against Sanitation Workers
Chennai: AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has launched a huge attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin over the state government's alleged ill-treatment of sanitation workers. At least 900 sanitation workers who had been on a strike for the last 13 days were detained in Chennai. They have objected to the state government outsourcing conservancy services in two city zones. "At the gates of the Ripon Building, in the middle of the night, your administration unleashed oppression - brutally beating and removing sanitation workers who, even during Covid, cleaned up our garbage and kept the city tidy - and detained them at various locations," EPS, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, said in a post on X. "Who are they? Anti-social elements? Gangsters? Maoists? No. They are poor, humble people who work daily to clean and maintain Chennai city. Is it wrong that the sanitation workers, in a lawful manner, protested against you for acting exactly opposite to the promise you gave them?" EPS said. "You happily did photoshoots having tea and coffee with them... Was your friendliness only for that moment? Now, when they are asking you to fulfil your promise, does it make you uncomfortable?" the former chief minister said. EPS reminded Mr Stalin something the chief minister said while the DMK was in the Opposition. "When you were the Leader of the Opposition, in the letters you wrote, didn't you grandstand saying, 'Regardless of any case against them, give these workers permanent jobs.' Do you still remember?" "In the 79 years of independent India, no government has ever unleashed such midnight violence and forced action against poor sanitation workers who serve both our government and our people," the AIADMK leader said. — Edappadi K Palaniswami-SayYEStoWomenSafety&AIADMK (@EPSTamilNadu) August 14, 2025 Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarassu today announced a major welfare package for sanitation workers, outlining new health, housing, education, and social security measures. The announcement came amid the detention of protesting sanitation workers and supporters. Mr Stalin in a post on X highlighted some key details of the package. These include Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for sanitation workers, with families receiving this sum in case of death on duty. — (@mkstalin) August 14, 2025 Despite the welfare package, the state has not withdrawn its plan to hand over conservancy services in Zones V and VI of Chennai to private contractors, nor has it assured permanency of jobs or salary security - the core demands of the striking workers.

Death of woman in Kothamangalam: SIT likely to arraign parents of the accused
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of a 23-year-old woman at Kothamangalam is likely to arraign the parents of the accused, Rameez, as well. The investigation team, led by the Muvattupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police ( continues to keep its action under the wrap though it is reliably learnt that the parents may be charged based on the revelations in the suicide note, reportedly written by the victim. The note alleged that Rameez through his family forced her for religious conversion as a precondition for marrying her. The victim was found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 09, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled upon the suicide note during the preparation of Mahassar on Sunday, based on which Rameez was arrested the next day. Though there were reports that the accused's parents would be summoned for questioning, the police haven't made any move yet. Kin's allegation The SIT was constituted after the police came under pressure as the kin of the victim and right wing political parties alleged that the woman was a victim of attempted forceful religious conversion. The Kothamangalam police, which initially investigated the case, had ruled that out, as they found it to be a case of a failed affair. Dissatisfied with the police investigation, the family of the victim petitioned the Chief Minister on Tuesday (August 12,2025) and the State Police Chief demanding that a probe be conducted by the National Investigation Agency. They accused the police of charging only lenient clauses against the accused and demanded that he and his parents be charged for attempted forceful religious conversion. Statements being collected The SIT has been collecting statements from friends, relatives and others who qualify as witnesses and sifting through the Call Detail Records of the victim and the accused. The investigation team is likely to get the custody of the accused by Monday (August 18, 2025). The accused was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc), 108 (abetment to suicide), and 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her. Partition Horrors Remembrance Day observed by ABVP in Kerala college, leads to clashes with SFI
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's directive to universities in the State to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14 led the RSS-affiliated student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to mark the occasion at a college in Kasaragod on Thursday, triggering clashes with the CPI(M)-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). The ABVP observed the day by putting up posters about it at a government college, following which SFI activists turned up in bigger numbers to oppose it. Both groups clashed with each other, and the posters put up by the ABVP were torn down, according to visuals shown on TV channels. The police intervened to stop the clashes between the two groups. The SFI also burned an effigy of the Governor outside the college campus. Later, the ABVP students again put up the posters on the college notice board, leading to activists of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) turning up to oppose the move. The activists of MSF, the student outfit of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), shouted slogans against the occasion and the Governor, as the police acted as a barrier between them and the ABVP members near the notice board. On Thursday, ABVP activists observed the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at the Kerala Central University, the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) college at Kumbala here, the Kasaragod Government College and the Chendayad MG College in Kannur, the student outfit said in a statement. Mr. Arlekar had recently issued a circular for the observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in State universities on August 14 on the instructions from the Union Home Ministry, according to Raj Bhavan. The Governor, as Chancellor of universities in the State, had issued the directive to the Vice Chancellors to organise seminars to commemorate the day and to forward the action plans regarding this. Opposing the directive, the Left government had made it clear that such programmes need not be held in the universities. The Congress-led UDF Opposition had said it would not allow any such programme to be implemented in the State. Both the Left and the UDF had alleged that the Governor's directive was an attempt to divide the people and the nation.
