INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rick Mears spent some time recently walking through the reimagined, rebuilt and recently reopened museum at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which houses some of the cars and artifacts from his long and distinguished career in motorsports.
It was on the new lower level, though, which had been used as storage and off limits to guests, where the four-time Indy 500 winner had to pause. The only other drivers to win that many times are A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Helio Castroneves, and together one of the smallest clubs in auto racing had an entire wing dedicated just to them.

'It's unbelievable. It really is,' Mears said. 'First of all, I never dreamed of being included in a list like that to begin with, period, and to be there with all the four winners and the way it's done up, and watch videos of all four races and be involved with it — it brings back a lot of memories, to begin with. But it's just an honor to be a part of it.'
The museum, tucked inside the 2.5-mile oval between Turns 1 and 2, closed for nearly 18 months as it underwent its first major renovation in four decades, and the product of the $60.5 million project was revealed to the public on April 2.
With the Indianapolis 500 on deck this weekend, thousands of fans are expected to flood through the seven permanent galleries, three rotating galleries and roughly 40,000 square feet of new space that houses new immersive and dynamic experiences.
'We wanted the museum to be more than just a gallery,' said museum president Joe Hale, who spearheaded the fundraising and construction effort. 'We wanted this to be a space that people can come back to over and over again.'

The old museum was primarily of a large, cavernous space that allowed guests to meander through cabinets full of fire suits, trophies and other relics, which told the story of a speedway that not only has hosted the Indy 500 since 1911 but also NASCAR races, motorcycle races, the Red Bull Air Race and even gas-filled balloon competitions.
Of course, there are still extensive spaces showcasing artifacts from more than a century of racing at the speedway, and dozens of cars from the museum's vast collection are on display. But the rebirthed museum represents more than that, from cutting-edge interactive technology to STEM spaces that can be used for school field trips and summer camps.
It begins by taking visitors on a guided tour through a recreation of the garage area, known as Gasoline Alley, as it has looked over the years. There are the old, wooden stalls from the early 1900s, antiquated spaces used by Foyt and Mario Andretti in the '60s and '70s, and more modern spaces that teams have used to prepare their cars for this weekend.
Then, visitors flood into the 'Starting Line Experience." There, replicas of the cars making up the front row of the Indy 500 sit as if they are on the starting grid. Video boards running along the walls and ceiling make guests feel as though they are right there on race day, preparing to take part in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.'

Eventually, visitors spill into three levels of gallery spaces: the new mezzanine dedicated to non-vehicle artifacts, including the fire suit of reigning IndyCar champ Alex Palou; the main level, featuring numerous cars and a wing dedicated to IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Roger Penske and his accomplishments in racing; and the lower level, where the four-time winners are celebrated and a rotating gallery includes cars from Chip Ganassi Racing.
Last month, the museum used proceeds from the sale of 11 vehicles unrelated to Indianapolis Motor Speedway — including a rare Mercedes W 196 R — to help purchase 14 cars from the Ganassi team, including five Indy 500 winners.
'I was very pleased that for many years, our Indy-winning cars have been in our race shop, sitting up there on the wall,' Ganassi said. 'Forty-seven people a year would see them up there, and it was kind of a, 'Hey, that's our Indy winners up there on the wall.' But the fact of the matter is it dawned on me one day that they should be among other Indy winners.'
Now they are on display for thousands of visitors every day.

There was still money left over from the sale of the museum's other cars, though, and that will provide a sizeable boost to its endowment. The plan eventually is to build a separate preservation shop near the track to not only work on its 200-plus cars, most of which are running, but also display more of them along with some of the other 55,000 items in the collection.
'It's really a special place,' Ganassi said. 'I would encourage you to go see it. It's going to take this — I think it's going to add a lot to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It's going to add a lot to the race. It's going to add a lot to the community.'

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Michigan this weekend for the FireKeepers Casino 400. The Michigan track draws plenty of racing pride and has real potential this year for a long shot to finish first. The usual suspects are favored in the odds, but our experts have some insight into other drivers who could claim their first win of the year. Advertisement As we do each week, we're bringing our burning questions about NASCAR controversies, power players and the race ahead to our motorsports experts, Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi. Take it away, guys! OK, tell us about the in-season tournament and why Jeff was railing against the seeding system on Tuesday. We haven't touched on it much this year, and it's almost time! Should we be getting excited about this yet? Jeff: Save your excitement for a few more weeks, but I'm definitely looking forward to it when the time comes. Basically, NASCAR is taking the top 32 drivers in points and doing a single-elimination, March Madness-style bracket over five races. It's head-to-head matchups between drivers that will play out in each race (1 vs. 32, 2 vs. 31, etc.). My beef with it is how they're doing the seeding. Instead of doing it in the order of point standings, NASCAR is going to take a driver's top finish over the next three weeks and seed the drivers based on that. So the winner of the Mexico City road course is going to be a guaranteed top-three seed (depending on tiebreakers) while some big-name driver who has three bad races might be a seed in the high 20s or worse. That's going to confuse casual bettors, which is the whole point of this thing in the first place. Imagine seeing Kyle Larson as a No. 27 seed heavily favored in the odds against AJ Allmendinger as a No. 6 seed; is it really an 'upset' if Larson wins that first-round matchup? Of course not. Other than that, though, it should be a fun, breezy talking point during the often-dry summer months. Jordan: It's a fun concept that should hopefully add some intrigue during a time in the season that sometimes needs more of it. Heightening the novelty is the fact that the five tracks comprising the tournament include a superspeedway, two road/street courses and one of the most iconic tracks in all of motorsports. However, as Jeff noted, the only hangup with all this is how the seeding is determined, as it's not nearly as straightforward as it should be, potentially turning off the casual fans NASCAR hopes to attract. This may be one of those things where it takes a year to work out all the kinks before taking off in Year 2. Advertisement You've been covering Carson Hocevar, who almost won last week. How long until the 22-year-old gets his first Cup win? What's his biggest weakness/obstacle at this point? Is his perceived aggressiveness on the track a pro or a con? Jeff: It sure seems like Hocevar and Spire are on the doorstep of something special. I wrote a profile of Hocevar this week that I'd love for you to check out, as he has quite a unique personality and doesn't run from his roots as a true NASCAR fan. But he's also obviously run afoul of many veteran drivers, who keep calling him out and getting angry with him, and it's seemingly going to come back to bite him at some point. That's not unusual for a young driver who bursts onto the NASCAR scene, though; veterans often try to get a brash new driver to adapt to the series' on-track code (which is ever-evolving), and sometimes it can result in fireworks. Overall, though, the saying in the garage is it's easier to pull the reins on a fast driver than to try and make a slow driver go faster. Jordan: Certainly feels like it could happen soon, especially if Spire Motorsports can continue fielding fast racecars as it's been doing on a seemingly near-weekly basis. And this week's race at Michigan, Hocevar's home track, represents a good place for him to get that first W, as it shares similar characteristics with Nashville and Charlotte, sites of the previous two races, where Hocevar was in contention for the victory. You talked a bit in our preview last week about Bubba Wallace's recent tough trend. What does he need to do to start improving? What's off for him, after what felt like an optimistic start? Jeff: He rebounded to a top-10 finish last week at Nashville, so that's progress. Honestly, at this point, he just needs to string together some good finishes, especially with the road course season coming up (which hasn't been his strong suit, although he's improved lately). He's still inside the playoff picture, just not quite as securely as before. Michigan is a place that has fit him well before, so he's very capable of leaving with back-to-back top-10 runs that would get his season back on track. Jordan: Maintaining track position up front and avoiding miscues are the two areas Wallace's No. 23 needs to improve upon. During his three-race stretch of poor finishes, issues on pit road cost Wallace several positions, dropping him back in the field and making him vulnerable to getting swept in crashes, which is exactly what happened. At Nashville, Wallace again had an issue on pit road — he was penalized for speeding — but he was able to rally back to finish inside the top 10. He's a winning driver and his team is capable, and Michigan is a track where he's nearly won previously, so a mistake-free race on Sunday could manifest into Wallace getting his third career win. Who is your favorite to win this week? Who does the track advantage? Jeff: This is NASCAR's only remaining two-mile oval (RIP Fontana, sniff sniff) and is the fastest track in the Cup Series. Teams will need to bring their best stuff, get their engines tuned up and nail their setups to rip around Michigan. There's a lot of manufacturer pride racing near Detroit, but it's mostly been a Ford show. Until Tyler Reddick and his Toyota won last season, Ford had won nine straight Michigan races (nine!). Chevrolet hasn't won a Michigan race since 2017, and Hendrick Motorsports hasn't won there since 2014. How crazy is that? Advertisement Anyway, I'll be honest: For some reason, I'm thinking we could see RFK Racing show up with some speed this week, and they're not even close to the favorites. Chris Buescher is +2000, and Brad Keselowski is +2500. And both drivers rank in the top three for average finish at Michigan in the three Next Gen races there. Hmm… Jordan: Ford has typically dominated races here in recent years, and Sunday feels no different, especially with how strong Team Penske has performed on intermediate tracks this season. Any one of Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Austin Cindric or Josh Berry could win, and it would in no way be a surprise. But among this quartet, Blaney is the pick. His consistent speed has been impressive, and Michigan, with its tendency for long green-flag runs, favors his driving style, where he is often the fastest over such runs. Look for Blaney to get his second win in as many weeks. Who is a long shot you like? Jeff: Speaking of RFK, Ryan Preece is +6000. Heck, Austin Cindric is +6000 (what??). And so is Erik Jones, who has shown strength at Michigan. They are all +190 to secure a top-10 finish, so maybe you could sprinkle a bit there and see if you end up getting two of the three correct. Jordan: Chris Buescher checks a lot of boxes. He drives a Ford (winner of nine of the past 10 races here) and has a Michigan win on his resume. His smooth driving style is a good fit here, where managing pace goes a long way to achieving success. And he's listed as high as +2200 on some boards, which means he offers a good return if he can find victory lane on Sunday. PARIS (AP) — No.1 Aryna Sabalenka faces No. 2 Coco Gauff in the French Open final on Saturday with both women aiming to win the title for the first time. Gauff lost the 2022 French Open final at age 18 but the American beat Sabalenka in the 2023 U.S. Open final, Gauff's only major so far. The 27-year-old Sabalenka, who is from Belarus, has won three majors but is appearing in her first French Open final. It is the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 final in Paris since 2013, when Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova, and just the second in the last 30 years. Sabalenka and Gauff have split their 10 previous matchups evenly, but Sabalenka won their most recent encounter, also on a clay court at the Madrid Open a month ago. ___

Stanley Cup Final for old men: Brad Marchand and Corey Perry shine on hockey's biggest stage

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Brad Marchand and Corey Perry are by far the oldest players in the Stanley Cup Final. Marchand just turned 37 last month, and Perry is 40. Naturally, they combined for a third of the goals in Game 2 on Friday night, showing this is indeed a Cup final for old men, not for the earth but certainly in hockey. Marchand scored his second of the game to win it in double overtime for the Florida Panthers after Perry got the latest tying goal in the history of the final in the waning moments of regulation to give the Edmonton Oilers hope. "You saying he's old, or what?" teammate Seth Jones said of Marchand. 'I'm going to tell him you said that. He's a dog. He's a gamer. He's a competitor. He brings so much energy to our team on and off the ice.' Where does that energy come from to play 22 important minutes? Anton Lundell hopes it comes from him and fellow linemate Eetu Luostarinen, the pups keeping an older dog like Marchand feeling young. 'He likes to spend time and be around us,' said Lundell, who set up each of Marchand's breakaway goals. "He's in great shape, and it seems like nothing is stopping him.' Marchand is not slowing down in his 16th NHL season and 13th playoff run, the first away from the Boston Bruins. He is in the final for a fourth time, this one 14 years removed from his first when he and Boston also faced a Canadian team, the Vancouver Canucks, and won the Cup to keep the country's title drought going. His two-goal game came on the anniversary of scoring short-handed on Roberto Luongo in the 2011 final. Luongo now works for the Panthers in their front office and posted on social media after the game, 'Favorite player of all time.' "Lu is awesome," said Marchand, whose 10 goals in the final are the most among active players, one more than Perry. "Happy to be on his team.' Perry even longer ago helped beat a Canadian team in the final when he and Anaheim defeated Ottawa in 2007. He's playing for the Cup for a sixth time in his career and for the fourth time over the past five years and is still producing at important moments. His tying goal with 17.8 seconds on the clock in the third period was just the latest example. 'Determination, finding a way to find the puck and then obviously putting it in the net. He's got a skill for that,' Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. 'Knowing in the playoffs it's hard to score and you need guys around the net and finding ways, he's as good as anybody finding ways to score.' Plenty of folks might be surprised to see Marchand and Perry doing this at their advanced ages. Paul Maurice, who has coached more games than anyone in NHL history except for Scotty Bowman, is not one of them. Maurice credits rule changes coming out of the 2004-05 lockout and sports science around the league for paving the way for players to contributed later into their 30s and even 40s. 'I think we're coming into an age of that,' Maurice said. "A tremendous amount of care for the players, whether that's the meals that they eat, how we travel — there's a lot of money that goes into allowing these players to play. The old guys and the young guys benefit from the rule change, and they're better fit, conditioned athletes over their entire lives.' Marchand has his own routine, one that goes beyond the Dairy Queen Blizzard jokes that keep swirling around him this playoffs. He rode a stationary bike before overtime, something he likes to do after most periods. 'You're trying to keep your legs going in overtime," Marchand said. 'Keep them feeling good.' The Panthers are feeling good after acquiring Marchand at the deadline from Boston and unleashing him for goals in Game 2 that tied the series. Winger Matthew Tkachuk thinks Marchand scored two of their biggest goals during this run, aging like a fine wine. 'Hopefully he can keep it going,' Tkachuk said. Unreal player, unreal competitor. ... 'He could play till he's 47 the way he's going.' ___
