VVIP Chopper Case: Court summons file of inquiry conducted by jail authorities on security of Christian Michel James
New Delhi [India], May 29 (ANI): The Rouse Avenue court on Thursday summoned the file of an inquiry conducted by Tihar jail authorities regarding the safety and security of Christian Michel James, an accused in the VVIP chopper deal case.
The inquiry was initiated in 2019 after an alleged attempt on James' life by an inmate. Special Judge Sanjeev directed the Deputy Inspector General of jails to produce the inquiry file through the concerned department.
The court noted that the accused, Christian Michel James, stated that the report's findings contradict the statements of witnesses.
The matter has been listed on June 6 for further hearing.
The court issued a bailable warrant against the jail superintendent for not filing the report despite receiving notice. However, during the hearing, the officer explained that the report was prepared but couldn't reach the court due to rainfall, leading the court to cancel the warrant.
During the hearing, the Superintendent of Jail Number 4 of Tihar appeared on a bailable warrant issued on the last date.
The court cancelled the bailable warrant after he explained why the report was delayed. The officer submitted that the report was but it could not reach court due to rainfall.
The court questioned why James was kept in a cell adjacent to a desperate criminal and suggested that he should be kept with inmates accused of white-collar crimes.
Accused Christian Michel James through advocate Aljo K Joseph had moved an application on 30.04.2025 requesting for re-consideratoin of the findings of inquiry report of 29.08.201 filed by jail authorities.
Earlier, an inquiry report of August 29, 2019 was filed stating that a Detailed inquiry was undertaken in which it was concluded that there is no life threat to Christian Michel James.
An inquiry was conducted in 2019 after the alleged life attempts on Jamesh. An inquiry was initiated following an email recieved from British High commission.
This report was filed during hearing on the earlier application moved by James regarding his safety and security in Tihar Jail.
James is an accused in VVIP Chopper deal case. He was extradited to India. (ANI)

"West Bengal rapidly turning into rape capital of India": Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar
Hooghly (West Bengal) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar slammed the West Bengal government on Monday, claiming that the state is 'rapidly turning into the rape capital of India.' His comments came during a visit to Hooghly, where he met the family of a rape victim. A 13-yeard-old girl, who had been missing since May 27, was allegedly raped and murdered. 'On the first day, when I spoke to his wife, the entire family was devastated. But despite the pain, they showed remarkable patience. Following that, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, and with the efforts of the Home Minister and Defence Minister, Purnam Kumar Shaw has been brought back home safely. This is truly commendable. Even earlier, under this leadership, we successfully brought Wing Commander Abhinandan back. This is the mark of a new India under PM Modi,' he said. Earlier on May 24, the BSF jawan expressed joy and relief upon arriving in his hometown of Rishra, West Bengal. 'I feel good. I came here to meet the people after the operation... I was worried about my parents, so I came home and met my entire family... I was there during the time of Operation Sindoor, and my parents were worried, so I came to meet them,' the BSF Jawan said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed happiness over BSF Jawan PK Shaw's safe return. She said the Trinamool Congress government had made efforts for his safe return. J-K DGP reviews security arrangements for Amarnath Yatra, Eid-Ul-Adha and upcoming events
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 2 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat, on Monday, chaired a joint meeting with officers from the Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at Police Control Room Kashmir to review the security arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025, Eid-Ul-Adha and other upcoming events. At the onset of the meeting, the participating officers briefed the chair regarding the proposed security arrangements for the conduct of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025 and the upcoming Eid-Ul-Adha, emphasising the significance of effective coordination among the various forces. According to a release, during the meeting, J-K DGP issued directions for implementing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and also emphasised the importance of proactive measures in mitigating risks and ensuring the safety and security of the participants. He also directed the field officers to intensify their efforts to dismantle the terror ecosystem, ensuring robust security arrangements for the upcoming events. DGP instructed the officers to bolster security measures and mitigate potential risks by deploying Anti-Sabotage teams along the yatra routes. He also directed the officers to enhance surveillance and threat detection capabilities by utilising advanced technologies and real-time monitoring. The meeting concluded with a resolve to ensure the highest level of preparedness and coordination for the smooth and successful conduct of all the events. The meeting was attended by Spl. DGP Coord. S.J.M Gillani-IPS, ADGP Armed, Anand Jain-IPS, IGP Kashmir, IGP POS PHQ J&K, IG CRPF Srinagar, IG CRPF KOS, IG BSF, all range DIsG of Kashmir Zone, DIG Pers, DIG Traffic Kashmir, DIG IR Kashmir, DIG AP Kashmir, DIG SSB, DIG ITBP, all district SSsP of Kashmir Zone and other senior officers. Shri Amarnathji Yatra is scheduled from July 3 to August 9. As the sacred yatra approaches, coordination between departments, early security deployments, and structured logistical planning are being emphasised to ensure the safe passage and spiritual experience of every pilgrim heading to Baba Barfani's darshan. The holy festival of Eid al-Adha, also known as the 'festival of sacrifice' or Greater Eid, is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar. This year, the festival is likely to be celebrated on June 7. Eid al-Adha is the second Islamic festival of the year and follows Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. "Directed Chief Secretary, DGP of West Bengal to ensure her safety": NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo on Sharmishtha Panoli's arrest
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Priyank Kanoongo on Monday said that the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) in West Bengal, directing them to ensure the safety of social media influencer Sharmishtha Panoli, who was recently arrested for posting an alleged communal post, owing to 'rape and death threats' against the accused. He said that the Legal Rights Observatory lodged a complaint with the NHRC, alleging that proper legal procedures were not followed during the arrest of Panoli, who was arrested by the West Bengal police from Haryana's Gurugram on May 30. 'We received a complaint from an organisation called Legal Rights Observatory regarding a law student, who was arrested by West Bengal Police from Haryana in the middle of the night over an allegedly objectionable social media post. The complaint alleges that proper legal procedures were not followed during her arrest and transit. It also states that the girl has received threats from radical Islamists, including rape and death threats,' Kanoongo told ANI. He added that NHRC would decide on its next course of action after inquiring whether proper legal protocols were followed during Panoli's arrest. 'We have issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP of West Bengal, directing them to ensure her safety, especially as she is now in judicial custody. Additionally, we have sought clarification from the Haryana government on whether all legal protocols were followed. Based on the responses, we will decide the next course of action,' Kanoongo added. Earlier, Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, strongly condemned the arrest of law student Sharmishtha Panoli. He issued a statement stating that her detention over a now-deleted social media video--despite her immediate apology--has sparked outrage, with Mishra denouncing it as a grave miscarriage of justice and a direct attack on freedom of expression. Mishra asserted that the Bengal government and Kolkata Police have repeatedly demonstrated selective enforcement of the law, targeting individuals from specific communities while overlooking more serious offences committed by others. He pointed to historical injustices in West Bengal, such as the Marichjhanpi massacre, Nandigram violence, and politically motivated killings, as evidence of systemic failures in the state's justice system. Recent incidents, including the Murshidabad riots, further exemplify what he termed 'appeasement politics,' where the state shields perpetrators of violence against certain groups while swiftly punishing those who express dissent. Law student and social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli was taken into custody by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on Friday night after facing intense backlash over a video she shared earlier this month. The now-deleted footage allegedly featured communally sensitive language and remarks that sparked outrage online and led to legal proceedings. (ANI)
