MOE lodges over 10 police reports following false claims over Zara Qairina's death
The ministry lodged the reports in Putrajaya upon advice from its legal division. Similar reports were also lodged in Sabah by teachers and parents of the school's students, whose names, photos and identities were shared, linking them to the case.
The reports were lodged on the basis that such claims could incite public anger towards teachers and students.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the police reports were made in line with the ministry's priority to safeguard the student's well-being and school communities, as the spread of false information, whether through videos or written content, could not only affect their emotional state but also pose a threat to their safety.
She said the police police reports were also intended to allow the authorities to probe the allegations and take action against those involved if the claims are untrue.
"The police should be allowed to handle the investigation. Unfortunately, many have emerged to spread false news about the girl's death, accompanied by various unfounded accusations and inaccurate information.
"MOE's legal advisory division (BUU) has compiled all these false information and lodged police reports for further action, including over a video of a woman claiming that Zara's internal injuries were caused by her being put into a washing machine.
"Imagine if such false news leads to students or teachers being threatened or assaulted. Also, what if investigations later prove them innocent but they've already been 'punished' through various false accusations?"
Zara Qairina was found seriously injured and unconscious at her school dormitory building early in the morning on July 16. She died at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE I), Kota Kinabalu at 11am the following day.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said police have not ruled out the possibility of bullying in relation to the girl's death. The preliminary investigation report has been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) for further action.
Fadhlina said that after the ministry lodged the police reports, some people who had been spreading the claims have since removed their related online content.
"People may think the MOE is staying silent, but in reality, we are assisting in the investigation, particularly in the questioning process involving 60 witnesses from the school, which must be conducted in accordance with legal guidelines and comply with the Child Act 2001," she said.
Fadhlina added that investigations were conducted in the presence of parents, the headmaster, a school counsellor, and a representative from the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), strictly following MOE's standard operating procedure (SOP).
"This SOP has long been practiced because we do not want underage students to feel pressured by the criminal investigation process, as they are not offenders.

Azli said the suspects took the victim to the Manir Health Clinic, but he was referred to the hospital due to his critical condition. He said an examination revealed the victim suffered brain injuries as well as bruises and wounds believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma. "The victim was pronounced dead at 2.05pm yesterday (Aug 9). A post-mortem revealed the cause of death was an intracranial haemorrhage due to blunt force trauma. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to hitting the victim with a clothes hanger," he said. The 27-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were detained at 10 pm in Marang shortly after the boy's burial, he said, adding that they are being remanded for seven days starting today under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. Toddler dies; father, stepmother held over suspected abuse
KUALA TERENGGANU: A one-year-11-month-old girl died at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital yesterday, allegedly after being abused by her father and stepmother in Kampung Banggol, Manir here. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said that at about 1am last Wednesday, the complainant, a medical officer on duty in the hospital's Red Zone, received the victim, who was unconscious. He said that upon examination, bruises were found on the victim's body, face and neck. He added that the victim, who was the youngest of two siblings, could already walk and was very active. The victim also had a three-year-old elder brother. "Previously, both suspects, the victim's 27-year-old biological father, who works as a labourer and the victim's 30-year-old stepmother who is a housewife, admitted to hitting the victim on the calves with a black clothes hanger. "There were both fresh and old marks on the baby's calves," he said. Azli said that at about 11pm on Aug 5, the victim was believed to have climbed over a gate blocking the bedroom door and fallen. He added that at the time, the victim's father and stepmother were at home, after which they picked her up and applied ice to her forehead to reduce the swelling. The victim then became active again as usual, he said. He said that at 8.30am on Aug 6, the victim appeared to be in good condition and her father left the house, leaving his wife with their two children. "At about 11am, the victim's father returned home and saw the victim sleeping. He did not suspect anything as she appeared to be asleep. At 12 noon, the victim's father tried to wake her to feed her milk and moved her body, but found that her body was limp. "Fearing that his baby might be having a seizure, the victim's stepmother massaged the so-called seizure nerve on the victim's neck," he said. He added that the victim's father then took her to the Manir health clinic for medical assistance, after which she was referred to the hospital. He said that an examination by the medical officer (the complainant) confirmed the victim had sustained multiple bruises, abrasions and brain injuries, which were believed not to have been caused by an accident. He added that police later went to the scene with the forensic unit from the Terengganu police contingent headquarters and seized a black clothes hanger. "The victim was confirmed dead at about 2.05pm yesterday at HSNZ, and the post-mortem revealed that she died from bleeding in the head caused by blunt force trauma. "The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. "The victim's biological father and stepmother have been remanded for seven days starting today. "The suspects' three-year-old child has been placed under the temporary care of the Social Welfare Department," he said.
