Minister shares Brunei's strategic directions

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Romaizah Mohd Salleh attending the 7th Apec Education Ministers Meeting (7th AEMM) from May 13 to 15 at the International Convention Centre, Jeju, South Korea shared Brunei Darussalam's strategic directions and initiatives such as the Ministry of Education (MoE) Digital Transformation Plan 2023-2027, the School Network Infrastructure Upgrade (SNIU) and the national AI training programme for educators.
She also highlighted Brunei Darussalam's involvement in regional initiatives including the APEC Digital Education Policy Training (Adept) Programme, which has facilitated knowledge exchange, addressed digital learning gaps and supported the co-development of strategies to enhance teacher capacity.
As part of the meeting agenda, Dr Romaizah also visited Seogwi Jungang Girls' Middle School in Jeju, where AI-based, digital and global competency education is being implemented.
The study visit provided valuable insights into Korea's future-ready education practices.
Accompanying Dr Romaizah were Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE Dr Chin Wei Keh and officials from the MoE.
The 7th AEMM is the highest-level platform for discussing education policy within the APEC region.
Typically held every four years, the meeting marked its return after a nine-year hiatus since the 6th AEMM in Peru in 2016.
A total of 20 out of 21 ministers or representatives from APEC member economies attended the meeting focused on the challenges and strategic directions for the future of education.
The meeting also served as a platform to exchange insights and best practices in educational innovation, address challenges in the digital era, and explore opportunities for stronger regional cooperation.
South Korea, as Chair of Apec 2025, aimed to advance inclusive and resilient education across the region.
Themed 'Bridging Educational Gaps and Promoting Inclusive Growth in the Era of Digital Transformation', the meeting was officiated by Acting President, Deputy Prime Minister and South Korea's Minister of Education Lee Ju-Ho.
In his remarks, Lee Ju-Ho stressed the importance of addressing emerging challenges, particularly the transformative impact of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as climate change and socio-economic divergence.
He also underlined Apec's role in navigating global issues – from financial crises to health emergencies – through cooperation and solidarity.
Apec ministers of education shared insights and best practices on key sub-themes including transformation and personalised education innovation, educational cooperation and expanding access to opportunities, as well as strengthening quality education and sustainable economic growth. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Ramanan pledges RM100,000 to boost school facilities in Sungai Buloh
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Sungai Buloh Member of Parliament Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who is also Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, has allocated RM100,000 under the Mesra Rakyat Project (PMR) to upgrade facilities at two secondary schools in his constituency. The allocation involves SMK Sierramas and SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara, each receiving RM50,000 for the construction of covered walkways, new classrooms, canteen repairs and other basic facilities in urgent need of maintenance. Ramanan, who is also PKR vice president, said the initiative aims to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment in line with the growing number of students and current educational needs. 'We want the children of Sungai Buloh to have access to the best education. Their schools must be equipped with safe, student-friendly facilities. This is an investment in the nation's future,' he said when officiating the programme today. During the event, he also announced that over 10 outstanding SPM 2024 students from both schools will receive Special Education Incentives from Yayasan Bank Rakyat next week in recognition of their academic achievements. Ramanan also personally contributed RM6,000 to SPM Excellence Award recipients from SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara. On the improved School Average Grade (GPS) for the 2024 SPM results at both schools, Ramanan said it reflects the combined efforts of teachers, parents and students. 'These efforts show the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency's ongoing commitment to strengthening the education ecosystem — not only in terms of infrastructure, but also in recognising the efforts and achievements of students,' he said. — Bernama

Private educational institutions to get 1-year training levy waiver from 2026
The Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) is currently collecting the levy for training and skills development. KUALA LUMPUR : For the first time, the government has announced a one-year exemption from training levy payments for all private educational institutions, effective Jan 1, 2026. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the exemption covers all institutions, including preschools, primary and secondary schools, vocational education centres, institutions of higher learning, and general training institutes. 'After receiving numerous views from private education and training institutions, the government has sought the best solution to train our young people. This (exemption) is intended to allow them to focus on improving quality,' he said. He said this when officiating at the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium grounds here today. Also present was human resources minister Steven Sim. At the same time, the prime minister directed the secretaries-general of the education ministry and the human resources ministry to monitor and ensure that these training institutions offer quality training following the granting of the levy waiver. 'Also monitor private companies with high profits to ensure they give something back to their workers,' he added. Under the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad Act 2001 (Act 612), employers are required to pay a levy to the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), an agency under the human resources ministry, for training and skills development. Anwar also stressed the need to train the younger generation in new fields using current methods, and not remain stuck in outdated training approaches. He said these include areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and chip manufacturing. 'Malaysia's semiconductor industry is not small – the country is regarded as a hub and base for the Asean region. Nearly all of the world's largest semiconductor and AI companies are based in Malaysia,' he said.

Malaysian Universities Urged To Offer AI Programmes, Set Up AI Faculties
TAWAU, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Higher Education has called on all universities in the country to offer programmes or establish faculties related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), in preparation for the growing demand for AI talents across various industries. Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken the lead in AI education by establishing the country's first AI faculty. 'We have made it clear that all universities should offer and open faculties and programmes related to AI, and the government will continue to monitor the latest developments in this field. 'In addition to AI, we are also seeing new developments in quantum technology,' he told reporters after officiating the appointment ceremony for the chairman of the Sabah Community College Advisory Committee, here today. He said the Ministry is also ready to offer AI-related courses at community colleges nationwide. 'Community colleges will not be bound by rigid course content and will be open to emerging fields. This will enable graduates to be more employable, as their skills are aligned with current market demands,' he said. At the same time, Zambry said the government would review the viability of community colleges that are no longer active or reassess the programmes offered at the inactive colleges. 'This is because some colleges are offering programmes that are not well-suited or have not received good response from the local community or students,' he said. Commenting on the water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Zambry said he hoped that the issue could be resolved by the state government, as the ministry and the federal government have channelled RM5 million, including for the construction of underground piping.
