Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley has suggested that the era of investing in cryptocurrencies primarily based on market capitalization is ending.
Horsley is betting on a new age that bears similarities to investing in companies on Wall Street.
Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan has recently urged cryptocurrency investors to look beyond Bitcoin.
For most people looking to dip their toes in the cryptocurrency market for the first time, the instinctive thing to do for years has been to scan the list of top coins on aggregation platforms like CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko and pick an asset that seems to align with them. But this approach to cryptocurrency investing may soon be at an end as the market matures, according to Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley.
'I think the CoinMarketCap leaderboard era of crypto is close to its end,' Horsley said on Wednesday.
He drew parallels to Wall Street, noting that investors did not pick companies by comparing market capitalizations.

'Is it interesting to invest in Walmart? Adobe? Mastercard? Johnson & Johnson?' He quizzed rhetorically. 'You don't answer that question by looking to see how their ranking in the S&P and market caps compare. You don't invest in Exxon because its market cap is cheaper than Eli Lilly & Co.'
Horsley said that instead, investors made picks by building a thesis around the business, considering its place in the market and prospects.
'I think that's what's coming in crypto,' he said. 'These things are not all the same.'
Indeed, the idea of narrative-driven investing has been gaining momentum in recent years as new sectors emerge in the market, such as tokenization, games, middleware services, and even AI projects.

Last week, Bitwise investment chief Matt Hougan advocated for cryptocurrency investors to look beyond Bitcoin and diversify their portfolio across several verticals. He compared the cryptocurrency landscape to the internet in 2004.
Hougan noted that many would have been tempted to invest in only Google at the time due to the dominance of search, but added that while that would have paid off, it wouldn't have been the best strategy in hindsight.
'Google did exceptionally well. Today it's one of the most valuable assets in the world. But other categories did well, too- in fact, the best performer turned out to be Netflix. That wasn't obvious in 2004,' he said.
Hougan said that, like the internet, blockchain is a general-use technology. He added that, as such, it is hard to predict which vertical will outperform in the next decade.
'History suggests you'd want to own a basket of crypto assets,' he said. 'Don't fret about picking winners; invest in the big picture.'
Still, it is hard to blame most new investors for getting overwhelmed, as there are thousands of projects to choose from, and risks tend to increase the smaller the project. Underscoring these risks, CoinGecko reported in April that over 50% of cryptocurrencies have failed.

Google Maps lets you customize your car icon on Android and iOS — here's how to do it
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When you're driving around on Google Maps, whether you're an Android or iPhone user, you'll always be represented on the map with the boring default arrow icon. But what if I told you that it doesn't have to be that way? Because you can change the look of your avatar, and Google's just released a bunch of new options. In the past Google only offered 3 alternate options, 3 colorful vehicles to mix up your navigation screen. Now, though, Google's updated Google Maps to offer 5 more options — each available in one of 8 colors. Though it isn't quite so easy to figure out how. Here's how to customize your car icon in Google Maps on Android and iOS. (Image: © Future) The first thing you need to do is start navigation. It doesn't matter where to, or if you even plan to go, just find a location with the search bar, then tap Start. (Image: © Future) The arrow icon in the center of the screen is your user icon, and the next step is to tap it. It may sometimes appear as a large white dot with a blue center (Image: © Future) You'll then see a pop-up menu showing off different icons you can use — including the arrow and a bunch of different cars. Simply scroll left and right until you find the avatar you like, and tap it. (Image: © Future) Once you've picked your car, you'll need to select a color. The default is white, but there are 7 other options for you to choose from. Then tap Done Just be warned that the original 3 car icons, which can be found at the far right, are only available in a single color. There you have it, your Google Maps icon is now a fetch new ride that looks a heck of a lot more interesting than the boring 2D arrow that you had before. Just remember that you can go back anytime to mix things up, and pick up a brand new driving icon to accompany you. Cathie Wood buys $13.9 million of popular AI stock
Cathie Wood, head of Ark Investment Management, often buys her favorite tech stocks when prices dip. This is what she did in late May, adding shares of a popular AI company after a pullback. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Wood's funds saw a brief bump after Trump won the presidency last November, but that momentum didn't go far. Her flagship Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK) underperformed the S&P 500 index amid broader market volatility this year. Year-to-date, ARKK is down 2.15%, while the S&P 500 index is up 0.51%. Wood gained a remarkable 153% in 2020, which helped build her reputation and attract loyal investors. Still, her long-term performance has made many others skeptical of her aggressive style. As of May 30, Ark Innovation ETF, with $5 billion under management, has delivered a five-year annualized return of negative 1.66%. In comparison, the S&P 500 has an annualized return of 15.94% over the same period. Image source: Marco Bello/Stringer/Getty Images Wood's investment strategy is straightforward: Her Ark ETFs typically buy shares in emerging high-tech companies in fields such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, biomedical technology, and robotics. Wood says these companies have the potential to reshape industries, but their volatility leads to major fluctuations in Ark funds' values. Related: Cathie Wood's net worth: The Ark Invest CEO's wealth & income The Ark Innovation ETF wiped out $7 billion in investor wealth over the 10 years ending in 2024, according to an analysis by Morningstar's analyst Amy Arnott. That made it the third-biggest wealth destroyer among mutual funds and ETFs in Arnott's ranking. Wood recently said the U.S. is coming out of a three-year "rolling recession" and heading into a productivity-led recovery that could trigger a broader bull market. In a letter to investors published last month, she dismissed recession predictions as she expects "more clarity on tariffs, taxes, regulations, and interest rates over the next three to six months." "If the current tariff turmoil results in freer trade, as tariffs and non-tariff barriers come down in tandem with declines in other taxes, regulations, and interest rates, then real GDP growth and productivity should surprise on the high side of expectations at some point during the second half of this year," she wrote. She also struck an optimistic tone for tech stocks. "During the current turbulent transition in the U.S., we think consumers and businesses are likely to accelerate the shift to technologically enabled innovation platforms including artificial intelligence, robotics, energy storage, blockchain technology, and multiomics sequencing," she said. But not everyone shares Wood's bullish outlook. Her flagship Ark Innovation ETF has seen $2.02 billion in net outflows over the past year through May 29, including nearly $144 million in the last month alone, according to ETF research firm VettaFi. On May 28, Wood's Ark funds bought 251,080 shares of Tempus AI (TEM) . That chunk of stock was valued at roughly $13.9 million as of May 30's close. Wood has been actively buying Tempus AI's stock since last June's IPO. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi also bets on this stock. In January, Pelosi bought 50 call options (a bet that a stock will rise) for Tempus AI valued at least $50,000. Related: Cathie Wood buys $2.7M surging China tech stock after tariff talks Tempus AI is a health technology company founded in 2015. It uses AI for diagnostics and helps physicians make personalized, data-driven decisions. The stock plunged more than 19% on May 28 after short-seller Spruce Point Capital Management released a report raising concerns about management's alleged history of promoting disruptive technology companies with revenue recognition issues and shareholder losses. The report also questioned the validity of Tempus AI's artificial intelligence services, citing minimal revenues and product demonstrations. Tempus AI responded that the report is "riddled with hypotheticals and inaccuracies and fails to address Tempus' history of strong financial performance and impressive growth." Wood's team said it has investigated the credibility of these allegations. The team believes that Tempus AI "remains focused on delivering data-driven, AI-enabled, patient-centered diagnostics and improving outcomes through precision medicine," according to a weekly letter to investors. Despite that tumble, Tempus AI stock has surged 63% year-to-date. On May 6, the company reported first-quarter results, with revenue climbing 75.4% year-over-year to $255.7 million. Gross profit surged 99.8% to $155.2 million, driven by continued margin gains in its Genomics and Data and Services segments. It raised its full-year 2025 revenue forecast to $1.25 billion, reflecting roughly 80% growth from the previous year. However, the company is still not profitable, and net loss for the quarter widened to $68 million from $64.7 million. Wood says health care is the "most underappreciated application of AI." "We've got 37 trillion cells in our body, and they're going to be sequenced as we're looking for cures," Wood told CNBC in February. "I think the most underappreciated application of AI is health care. I think health care is responsible for an incredible amount of storage out there right now. Data is the name of the game." Wood's latest trades this week also include buying shares of Nvidia (NVDA) , Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , Iridium Communications (IRDM) , Intuitive Machines (LUNR) , and Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA) . At the same time, she trimmed positions in Tesla (TSLA) , Roblox (RBLX) , and CoreWeave (CRWV) . 'Bitcoin Has Never Been More Important': Bitwise CEO Reacts To Elon Musk's Call To Accelerate GDP Growth
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has recently sparked discussions about U.S. fiscal concerns. Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley has pitched Musk's remarks as a case for Bitcoin. BitMEX founder and Maelstrom investment chief Arthur Hayes said in November that Trump's economic policies could send Bitcoin's price soaring. The U.S. is in a worrying fiscal situation. Most recently, the country has seen its credit rating downgraded, reflecting concerns over its ability to manage its debt, which now sits at $36.2 trillion as government spending continues to surpass revenue. Amid debates on the best course of action to tackle the problem, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has pitched his tent behind the Trump administration's policy agenda. According to one pro-crypto market expert, the proposed solution makes a case for Bitcoin. Don't Miss: — no wallets, just price speculation and free paper trading to practice different strategies. Grow your IRA or 401(k) with Crypto – . Musk said last week that accelerating GDP growth was the only way the U.S. could get out of its fiscal quagmire. 'DOGE has and will do great work to postpone the day of bankruptcy of America, but the profligacy of government means that only radical improvements in productivity can save our country,' he said. Musk's sentiments echo those of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week. 'We've inherited a 6.7% deficit-to-GDP, the highest outside war or recession. Our focus is to grow the economy faster than the debt. That's how we will stabilize debt-to-GDP,' Bessent told CNN. Reacting to Musk's remarks, however, Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley pitched it as a case for Bitcoin. 'Every sign in the world is saying monetary debasement is the road ahead,' he said. 'Bitcoin has never been more important.' Trending: New to crypto? on Coinbase. Horsley's sentiments come as efforts to accelerate GDP growth are likely to involve increasing the monetary supply to stimulate economic activity, which could lead to the debasement of the dollar, an idea that Trump has been open to in the past to boost U.S. exports. Bitcoin proponents argue that the digital asset has the potential to act as a hedge against such currency debasement, similar to gold, due to its scarcity. How much could this fiscal policy benefit Bitcoin? BitMEX founder and Maelstrom investment chief Arthur Hayes said in November that Trump's economic policies could send Bitcoin's price to $200,000 by year-end and $1 million by 2028. According to Hayes, it is the Treasury, not the Federal Reserve, that will help Trump achieve his agenda through Treasury buybacks. The Federal Reserve has so far refused to cut interest rates or engage in any form of quantitative easing despite not-so-subtle pressure from Trump. Hayes compared the current phase of the market to Q3 2022. At the time, markets launched a recovery despite uncertainty and consecutive rate hikes by the Fed. He stated that the Treasury intervened with a buyback program, which brought $2.5 trillion into the markets. At last look, Bitcoin is up over 60% since Trump's election victory, trading at $109,000. Hayes' 2028 price target suggests that the asset has the potential for a 10x surge in the next three years. Read Next: A must-have for all crypto enthusiasts: .
