The Hindu27-05-2025

The city's first third level flyover is set for launch between the Outer Ring Road and Kondapur, bringing good news for daily commuters in the IT corridor.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has informed through a media release that the works for the flyover are almost complete, and efforts are being made to launch the structure in the first week of June.
The flyover is expected to bring down the traffic congestion at the Gachibowli junction, saving a lot of time and fuel for the commuters, the note said. It has been built with ₹178 crore expenditure as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan.
Stretching over a length of 1.2 kilometres and width of 24 metres, the six lane flyover arches over the existing Level 1 flyover at Gachibowli junction, and the Shilpa Layout Phase-I flyover, which is the second level flyover.
This facility will ease the traffic between ORR and Kondapur and Hafeezpet, besides improving the connectivity with Hitech City and Financial District. Besides, it will reduce the travel time to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the note mentioned. It will be the 23rd flyover and 37th structure built under the SRDP project which was designed with 42 structures.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan urged the South Central Railway to complete the latter's portion of the railway overbridges at Shastripuram and Falaknuma within three months, it said.

Excise gets 1,6000 applications for 28 bars

Hyderabad: The excise department's call for applications for 28 (2b) bars in the GHMC area and its nearby areas has attracted an overwhelming response, with over 1,600 applications submitted just one day before the June 6 deadline. It is anticipated that this number could reach 2,000. The department has opened the tender process for licences in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as well as for individual licences in the municipalities of Mahbubnagar, Nizamabad and Jalpally. This includes bars that lost their licences for failing to pay fees or submit the necessary documents within 90 days of receiving their initial licence. There are around 2,500 bars across the state. According to sources, many people not involved in the bar or wine shop business have applied in large numbers for the licence, for which the fee is set at Rs 1 lakh. "Many believe they can sell their licence for double the price to people in the business and make a quick profit," said sources, adding that: "This trend has been seen with wine shops and is now happening with bars as well." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo In the GHMC area alone, over 500 applications have been submitted. "While this surge is positive, it is challenging to penalise a shop for not maintaining the required distance from hospitals and educational institutions. Current licence holders are struggling to remain in the same location," the sources said. Meanwhile, the excise department has reported a notable 7% increase in revenue for the 2024–25 financial year. The Telangana govt is banking on a new excise policy and a revision of land values to boost revenue. The 2025-26 budget projects tax revenue of Rs 1.45 lakh crore, encompassing income from liquor, GST and other sales taxes, as well as land parcel sales. Sources mentioned that a new excise policy is expected to be introduced this year and that the govt is anticipating significant income from application fees for liquor outlets. Indiramma houses in G+3 buildings for poor in 16 slums across Hyderabad: Telangana Revenue Minister

Telangana government would construct Indiramma houses in ground-plus-three-storey buildings for the poor in 16 slums across Hyderabad. Similar course of action is being formulated for other districts. People were unwilling to shift to houses constructed on the outskirts of the State capital as they would lose livelihood. Considering this, a decision was taken to construct houses in the localities, said Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy. Besides Hyderabad, it would be implemented in Warangal, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Karimnagar and other urban localities. Though 42,000 houses were constructed away from Hyderabad, only 19,000 chose to occupy them. Recent field level inspection revealed that only 13,000 are living there, said Mr. Reddy at a review meeting on the Indiramma Houses held on Friday (June 6, 2025). The focus of providing the houses shifted ti the poor in the urban localities after the scheme was streamlined in rural Telangana. Around 10.71 lakh applications for the houses were received from 150 divisions in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). It was learnt that around seven lakh were found to be eligible for the houses.

Non-working streetlights could hover around 50,000-60,000 in the city

Streetlight maintenance, which has been a sticking point for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for quite some time, could take longer for streamlining. The agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a public sector agency, for streetlight maintenance ended on April 30, but no new agency has been chosen yet. The GHMC's standing committee was presented with two choices—either continue with EESL or invite tenders. The committee unanimously opted for the latter. Officials informed that the process of choosing a new agency could take at least two months, during which the existing 17 vendors of the EESL will be continued. 'The tenders involve a huge expenditure, and GHMC does not have the authority to take a decision about it. We need to forward it to the government. It could take some time,' said an official. An ongoing survey to take stock of the streetlight infrastructure before issuing tenders found that around 10% of the lights are non-functional, quating to a staggering 50,000-60,000 malfunctioning streetlights. For some lights, lamps need to be replaced, while for some others, MCBs or timers are non functional. Mopping up enough number of bulbs and other spare parts in the intervening period is proving to be a difficult task. As of June 4, a total 4,63,427 street lamps have been enumerated in the city as part of the survey. The Streetlight Project with the aim of replacing all conventional lamps with LEDs began in 2018. While 98% glow rate was the condition on which payments were made to the EESL, the general glow rate had been much less than optimum. Mostly it hovered at about 70-80 per cent. The total number of LED streetlights installed in the city is 5,50,088. Officials say that several agencies, particularly the LED manufacturers are evincing interest in bidding. The conditions to be incorporated in the service level agreement are 98% or above glow rate, penalties against day glowing, non rectification beyond the agreed period, non maintenance of buffer stock, non functioning of the dash board, and non functioning of CCMS (Centralized Control Monitoring System).
