Wee: Stray dog tests positive for rabies in Tubau, Bintulu
KUCHING (July 6): Sarawak has recorded a rabies case involving a stray dog in Sungai Sebutin, Tubau, Bintulu this week, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
He said the case came to light following a dog bite incident and the animal was later tested positive for rabies.
Speaking at his 'Shall WEE Talk' Facebook live session yesterday, he appealed to everyone to remain vigilant and be particularly alert in areas where stray dogs roam freely.
Wee said the city council is concerned about stray dogs roaming in public areas where young children mingle.
He noted that they recently engaged with young members of the MBKS Children's Council, who brought up their fear of stray dogs.
In light of this, he said the city council, together with its Children's Council, will deliberate on the matter and propose solutions to enhance awareness and public safety.
According to the Mayor, the young members of the Children's Council have offered meaningful feedback, and his council will act upon their perspectives and address the challenges they face.
He added that the young members have contributed to the city's ongoing efforts to fight rabies.
On a separate issue, Wee said the city council is working on a flood mitigation plan for Jalan Mendu under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
He added that a consultant has been engaged to carry out a study to address the frequent flash floods in the area.
Earlier this week, heavy rainfall caused flash floods along Jalan Mendu, resulting in traffic chaos.
Wee said flash floods sometimes happened due to illegal property extensions carried out by some homeowners, leading to infrastructure and drainage issues
Given this, he urged the community to report illegal renovation cases by sharing photos and the location with the city council for enforcement and solutions.
When a complaint is received, he said the council will check if design plans were submitted and put a stop to the works if necessary.
He hoped that the public would continue to render their cooperation and support the city council's efforts in enhancing Kuching's environment and people's living conditions. Bintulu lead rabies Tubau wee hong seng

SEREMBAN, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has begun distributing 150 community boats, valued at RM1.8 million, nationwide to facilitate and expedite the rescue of flood victims at the early stage. Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the phased handing-over of the boats to eligible recipients began today. 'The bodies identified as eligible recipients include the Community and Volunteer Fire Brigade, Rukun Tetangga groups, Village Development and Security Committee, as well as the Federal Village Development and Security Committee and stations with a high number of flood rescue operations. 'The procurement of the new boats and accessories for community rescue was made through the allocation under the 2023 Third Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to facilitate the rescue process of local communities to safe locations,' she said. She told reporters this after officiating the Water Activity Safety Campaign programme in conjunction with the World Drowning Prevention Day, which was also attended by JBPM director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad here today. Aiman Athirah also said that Malaysia recorded an average of 1,359 deaths from drowning from 2020 to 2024, with an annual fatality average of 272. 'If analysed, the number of deaths from drowning is much higher than deaths due to fires. The high-risk age group - between 20 and 39 and between seven and 19 - recorded the highest number of fatalities, accounting for 36 per cent and 30 per cent of the total deaths, respectively,' she said. As such, she said appropriate prevention programmes need to be implemented, in addition to ensuring policy planning involving the participation of various sectors is carried out to reduce the risks of drowning incidents. Aiman Athirah said continuous efforts, like today's campaign, should be expanded not only to tourist areas but also to villages and rural areas near natural water resources, such as rivers and lakes.
