'He's been raised on watching tape,' Sark explains Week 1 game planning for Arch Manning

USA Today5 days ago
Putting the Week 1 game plan together must be one of the toughest jobs of the year for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. There is the unknown of new quarterback Arch Manning's first start. There's his reaction to the hostile crowd at Ohio State's famous Horseshoe. There's a new defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes.
Sark talked about the challenges on Fox Sports' the Herd with Colin Cowherd Thursday. The biggest challenge might be figuring out what new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia might do. The longtime DC during the New England Patriots dynasty and former Detroit Lions head coach will bring a new scheme to Columbus.
"We're going against a really good defensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, which I don't think people are talking a whole lot about." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd
"Putting a plan together that we feel good about also gives Arch a little bit of freedom to get us in and out of some things that as looks present themselves in the game, because there's so many unknowns, I think is going to be critical. And he's more than capable of doing that. You know, the guy's been raised watching tape of Eli, Peyton, his dad and his grandpa. We're going to feel good about that. And he's got great composure and he's been in some fires with us already. So we'll feel good about it." "We're going against a really good defensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, which I don't think people are talking a whole lot about." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd
Sark says they won't over-complicate the offense for Manning. The environment and assignment will be tough enough. But they also want Manning to get a taste of checking out of a look at big moments.
"Do we want to major in him having to audible on the road? That's a dangerous thing to do on the road. But we're going to give him the opportunity to do those things, especially in some critical moments." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd

Angels get to deGrom and stop Rangers' 6-game win streak with 6-4 victory

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kevin Newman, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo homered to help the Los Angeles Angels beat Texas 6-4 on Monday night, snapping the Rangers' six-game win streak. Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 19th save. The 37-year-old Jansen hasn't allowed an earned run in 16 consecutive appearances, the longest active streak in the American League and the third-longest of his career. Connor Brogdon (2-1) replaced Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz in the fifth and gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings. Kochanowicz, called up from Triple-A Salt Lake earlier in the day, allowed two runs — none earned — in 4 2/3 innings. Newman's two-run shot opened the scoring in the third, and Zach Neto added an RBI double in the fifth. Josh Jung hit a solo homer and Jonah Heim had an RBI single for the Rangers. Josh Smith and Corey Seager scored when Adolis García reached on an error by right fielder Gustavo Campero, who bobbled a routine flyball. Jacob deGrom (10-3), who was 6-0 in his previous 10 starts, gave up five runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has allowed at least one home run in five consecutive games in the same season for the first time in his 12-year career. Ward's leadoff homer in the sixth gave the Angels the lead for good, and Rengifo added a two-run drive off reliever Jacob Webb to make it 6-3. The Angels, who beat Seattle 4-1 on Sunday, have won back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Arizona on July 11 and 12. Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Texas on Tuesday against Yusei Kikuchi (4-7, 3.23) in the middle game of the series.

Why Penn State believes Zakee Wheatley will be a game-changer in 2025

James Franklin didn't hesitate when talking about Zakee Wheatley at Big Ten Media Days. The fifth-year safety wasn't just mentioned in passing—he was highlighted as a major piece of what Penn State's defense plans to build around this season. 'The ball loves Zakee,' Franklin said. 'He's had his hand in nine takeaways in his career. We think he's going to have a phenomenal year.' That kind of trust doesn't come easy in Franklin's program. It's built over time, in the weight room, in film sessions, in practice reps—day after day. And Wheatley has put in that work. After years of development and flashes of playmaking ability, this is the year the staff expects it all to come together. Nicknamed 'The Takeaway King' by fans, Wheatley has consistently shown a knack for being in the right place at the right time. His instincts, ball skills, and awareness make him a natural disruptor. He doesn't just play defense—he flips momentum. And in big games, that matters more than anything. With some recent changes on the roster, this defense needs veteran voices. Wheatley fits that mold perfectly. He's not just a playmaker, he's a communicator. Franklin and the staff trust him to set the tone and be the anchor for a defensive backfield that's reloading, not rebuilding. That leadership quality is especially important in 2025. With games against heavy hitters like Oregon and Ohio State on the schedule, the defense can't afford miscommunication or breakdowns. Having a fifth-year player like Wheatley—who's seen it all—helps stabilize everything. But it's not just experience that sets him apart. It's his ceiling. Franklin didn't hold back when hyping up what kind of impact Wheatley can have. 'He's a ball magnet,' he said. 'The ball just finds him.' That's the kind of skill you can't coach. It's what NFL scouts look for. It's what opposing quarterbacks fear. And in a season where the margins will be razor-thin, a guy who can create extra possessions is worth his weight in gold. Wheatley is set to graduate this fall, a testament to his commitment both on and off the field. He's become a complete player—smart, physical, and always around the ball. Now, it's time for him to lead. And if Franklin's words are any indication, Penn State believes Wheatley is ready to take that next step from steady contributor to national name. So keep an eye on No. 6 this fall. Because if the Nittany Lions make another championship push, Zakee Wheatley's fingerprints will be all over it.

Dallas Cowboys Suffer 'Brutal' Training Camp Injury

Dallas Cowboys Suffer 'Brutal' Training Camp Injury originally appeared on The Spun. A key player for the Dallas Cowboys is going to be sidelined for most if not all of training camp after an injury today. According to reports, Dallas Cowboys starting offensive tackle Tyler Guyton is set to miss the next four to six weeks of action after suffering a "bone fracture" in practice. There were initial fears that it was a season-ending ACL tear, but the MRI came back with a more acceptable diagnosis. "Tyler Guyton's ACL is intact after a MRI, according to a source. He has a bone fracture and will not require surgery. Looking at a 4-6 week recovery. Cowboys get better than expected news," ESPN's Todd Archer reported. Guyton started 11 of 15 games played for the Cowboys as a rookie in 2024. He played over 600 snaps after going 29th overall to the team in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Cowboys hope to pair Guyton with a fellow first-round offensive lineman, former Alabama guard Tyler Booker. This past week the Cowboys also saw veteran wide receiver Parris Campbell suffer a leg injury. Though much like Guyton, the diagnosis for Campbell was better than it could have been. He reportedly has an MCL sprain. "Update on some injuries: Cowboys WR Parris Campbell has a MCL sprain in his knee, according to a person with knowledge of the injury," Cowboys insider Calvin Watkins reported today. The Dallas Cowboys have certainly gotten off a bit easy with some of the injury reports that have come in early in the NFL training camp period. Hopefully it stays that way and the team can avoid any catastrophic injuries over the next few weeks (and months).Dallas Cowboys Suffer 'Brutal' Training Camp Injury first appeared on The Spun on Jul 29, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.
