SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft on June 8 unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere.
Two 'ROG Xbox Ally' models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based Asus will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform.
'The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows,' Ms Bond said.
'On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and Battle.net to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect.'
The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese 'Super Mario' creator.
The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as 'Animal Crossing'.
Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months.
Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens.
'When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming,' Microsoft said in a release.
'The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels – whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room.' AFP

Getty's landmark UK lawsuit on copyright and AI set to begin
The case is one of several lawsuits brought in Britain, the US and elsewhere over the use of copyright-protected material to train AI models. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON - Getty Images' landmark copyright lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Stability AI begins at London's High Court on June 9 , with the photo provider's case likely to set a key precedent for the law on AI. The Seattle-based company, which produces editorial content and creative stock images and video, accuses Stability AI of breaching its copyright by using its images to 'train' its Stable Diffusion system, which can generate images from text inputs. Getty, which is bringing a parallel lawsuit against Stability AI in the United States, says Stability AI unlawfully scraped millions of images from its websites and used them to train and develop Stable Diffusion. Stability AI – which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and in March announced investment by the world's largest advertising company, WPP – is fighting the case and denies infringing any of Getty's rights. A Stability AI spokesperson said that 'the wider dispute is about technological innovation and freedom of ideas', adding: 'Artists using our tools are producing works built upon collective human knowledge, which is at the core of fair use and freedom of expression.' Getty's case is one of several lawsuits brought in Britain, the US and elsewhere over the use of copyright-protected material to train AI models, after ChatGPT and other AI tools became widely available more than two years ago. Wider impact Creative industries are grappling with the legal and ethical implications of AI models that can produce their own work after being trained on existing material. Prominent figures including Elton John have called for greater protections for artists. Lawyers say Getty's case will have a major impact on the law, as well as potentially informing government policy on copyright protections relating to AI. 'Legally, we're in uncharted territory. This case will be pivotal in setting the boundaries of the monopoly granted by UK copyright in the age of AI,' Ms Rebecca Newman, a lawyer at Addleshaw Goddard, who is not involved in the case, said. She added that a victory for Getty could mean that Stability AI and other developers will face further lawsuits. Ms Cerys Wyn Davies, from the law firm Pinsent Masons, said the High Court's ruling 'could have a major bearing on market practice and the UK's attractiveness as a jurisdiction for AI development'. Actor Jared Leto accused of sexual misconduct by nine women
Though Jared Leto's representative has 'expressly denied' the allegations, the actor-musician has yet to respond to them. PHOTO: AFP American actor and musician Jared Leto, who starred in films such as The Suicide Squad (2016) and House Of Gucci (2021), has been accused of sexual assault by nine women as young as 16 at the time of the alleged incidents. These accusations stretch over two decades, in which Leto, 53, is said to have continued to engage with the women. The accusations resurfaced when Los Angeles-based DJ Allie Teilz, 30, reposted one of her Facebook posts from 2012, in which she alleged that Leto had assaulted her when she was 17. She wrote: 'You're not really in Los Angeles until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… I was assaulted and traumatised by this creep when I was 17.' She described his actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable', as Leto 'knew her age', but claimed he 'did not care'. A second anonymous victim alleged that Leto approached her at a cafe in Los Angeles in 2006 when she was 16, according to a report by US-based newsletter Air Mail. Leto was said to have struck up a 'quick conversation' with the girl and got her number. According to the woman, their late-night conversations 'turned sexual'. Former model Laura La Rue, 33, also claimed that Leto had 'flirted' with her and 'teased' her when he invited her to his Los Angeles home after they had met at an animal rights benefit when she was 16. During a separate visit, Leto walked out of a room completely naked in front of her, claimed La Rue, who was 17 at that time. 'He just walked out... like it was normal… I thought maybe this was just what adult men do,' La Rue told Air Mail. Leto's representative denied La Rue's claims, stating: 'Their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms La Rue later applied to work as Mr Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' Though Leto's representative has 'expressly denied' the allegations, the actor has yet to respond to them. Leto, who made his acting debut in the television series Camp Wilder in 1992, won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for playing a transgender woman in the biographical drama Dallas Buyers Club (2013). In 2024, he performed at the Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix as the lead singer of rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars, which he co-founded with his brother Shannon Leto in 1998.
