SC Asks Bhupesh Baghel's Son To Approach HC In PMLA Case, Junks Ex-Chhattisgarh CM's Plea
Bhupesh Baghel's plea challenged the provisions of the PMLA and CrPC, particularly those relating to 'further investigation'.
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel seeking protection from arrest and alleging misuse of investigative powers in the money laundering case.
His plea challenged the provisions of the PMLA and CrPC, particularly those relating to 'further investigation". His plea comes two weeks after his son Chaitanya Baghel was arrested in the money laundering case.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked Baghel to approach the High Court.
While hearing Chaitanya Baghel's petition seeking interim bail and challenging provisions of PMLA, the top court asked him to approach the High Court in connection with the money laundering case.
'If you want to simpliciter file writ petition challenging provisions…but you are questioning the arrest…you can't ask for whole some relief in one petition. Why should we hear the facts at all? For what purpose are HCs there? This abnormality is arising only in cases of affluent persons. Where will poor persons go?" Justice Kant asked.
The plea filed by them challenged the powers of the CBI and the ED to arrest and investigate accused individuals and their jurisdictions in these cases.
The father-son duo had questioned the legitimacy of the probe being carried out by the ED and CBI.
Chaitanya was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 18 after they searched his home, which he shares with his father in Bhilai town, Chhattisgarh. He is now in jail under judicial custody until August 4 in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged liquor scam.
The ED has alleged that Chaitanya was involved in handling over Rs 1,000 crore of illegal money made from the suspected liquor scam in the state. Out of this, the ED claims he used Rs 16.7 crore for developing his real estate project. Chaitanya has strongly denied these charges and claimed innocence.
Bhupesh Baghel alleged that his son's arrest was a part of the political vendetta by the BJP government.

The party has demanded an immediate halt to illegal tree cutting, a complete audit of past permissions, and the creation of a publicly monitored dashboard to track compensatory plantations.

Two arrested for cyber fraud of Rs 69 lakh
1 2 Times News Network Kanpur: Two suspects were arrested from Jajmau on Sunday for their involvement in a cyber fraud of Rs 69 lakh. The arrested persons were identified as Hasan from Saadatganj in Lucknow, and Asim from Rani Kothi Napier Road Colony, Thakurganj. The police have recovered three mobile phones, four chequebooks, six debit cards, and a car from the suspects. They used a rickshaw puller's account for the transactions. On a complaint lodged by the director of a private company, the cybercrime unit analysed digital footprints and banking transactions, that led them to the suspects' location in Jajmau. The investigation revealed a pattern where the accused targeted business entities through sophisticated cyber techniques. The use of a rickshaw puller's account highlighted their modus operandi of exploiting vulnerable individuals to carry out their fraudulent schemes. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the IT Act and other relevant sections. Further investigation is underway to uncover any potential accomplices and retrieve the stolen funds.

Arms, ammo seized from flat, one held
Kolkata: A massive cache of arms and ammunition was seized from a ground-floor flat in a complex in Khardah's Regent Park on Monday, and the flat owner, Madhusudan Mukhopadhyay alias Liton (66), was arrested. Acting on information, Barrackpore cops raided the building, Pratima Manjil, and seized 15 firearms — both indigenous and foreign-made — and over a thousand rounds of ammunition. Valuables worth several lakhs and nearly Rs 5 lakh in cash were also seized from the premises. Cops believe Liton is an arms dealer with links to Munger, in Bihar. Another resident, Sushmita Dey Kundu, said, "He always greeted everyone with a smile, and mingle with everyone. We are deeply shocked. This is terrifying."
