Alexander Isak told to train alone by Newcastle: Reports
Newcastle United's Alexander Isak has been linked with a move to Liverpool, who have seen a £110 million ($146 million) bid for the 25-year-old rejected.
LONDON - Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle hangs in the balance after the Swedish striker was reportedly told to train apart from the rest of the squad on Aug 6.
The 25-year-old has been linked with
a British transfer record move to Liverpool after failing to feature in Newcastle's pre-season preparations.
Isak missed
the Magpies' trip to Singapore and South Korea, citing a minor thigh injury, and instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad.
He has since returned to Tyneside but Sky Sports reported that Isak was instructed to train after the rest of the squad had departed on Aug 6.
'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United,' Howe told reporters earlier in pre-season.
'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.'
Liverpool have seen a £110 million ($146 million) bid for Isak rejected, according to reports, with Newcastle seeking closer to £150 million.
Another major hurdle to any deal is Newcastle's ongoing struggles to finalise a deal to replace Isak.
They face competition from Manchester United for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after missing out on Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Liam Delap earlier in the window.
Liverpool have already splashed out over £250 million (S$430 million) this window on Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
However, they have also recouped major funds from the sales of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton.
And Darwin Nunez is close to a £46 million move to Saudi side Al Hilal that would free up more resources and space in the squad for another bid to sign Isak.
Since joining Newcastle for £63 million in 2022, Isak has scored 62 times in 109 appearances, including the goal that secured the club's first domestic trophy for 70 years in the League Cup final against Liverpool in March. AFP

Former City boss Taylor named head coach of Liverpool women
MANCHESTER, England :Gareth Taylor has been appointed head coach of Liverpool's women's team, the club announced on Friday, five months after being sacked by Manchester City. The 52-year-old coached City for five years, leading them to FA Cup and League Cup triumphs, and a narrow second-place finish to Chelsea in the Women's Super League in 2024 that was decided by goal difference. But he was fired by City in March, just five days before their League Cup final against Chelsea, with the club citing the team's underperformance. City went on to finish fourth in the WSL this past season while Liverpool were seventh. "Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of (Liverpool), and I am really looking forward to the task ahead," Taylor said. "Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way." Andy O'Boyle, managing director of Liverpool's women's programme, hailed the appointment, saying Taylor "has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams and his ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none." Taylor will take charge of Saturday's closed-door friendly against Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath. The WSL season kicks off on September 6.

"Counter-attacks, set-pieces, long-balls to (Palace striker Jean-Philippe) Mateta and individual quality of their forwards. A good challenge for us to start the season." Liverpool's last trip to Wembley ended in a surprise 2-1 League Cup final loss against Newcastle United in March, but Slot was not dwelling on that.
