Queen Camilla wipes away tear as veteran pays tribute to King's cancer battle

Independent10 hours ago
Queen Camilla was visibly moved at a VJ Day memorial ceremony on Friday as a 105-year-old war veteran paid an emotional, unscheduled tribute to King Charles's ongoing cancer treatment.
The King and Queen joined Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and 33 veterans, aged between 96 and 105, who served in the Far East and Pacific.
The national service of remembrance, held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, marked the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15, commemorating the end of the six-year war.
Often overshadowed by VE Day in May 1945, this significant date serves as a poignant reminder for those who served in the Far East, historically labelled "The Forgotten Army".
Yavar Abbas, a former captain in the 11th Sikh Regiment, took to the stage. While scheduled to read extracts from his 1945 Burma diaries, Mr Abbas, originally from Lucknow in India, paused his prepared remarks to address the monarch directly.
"I make no apologies for briefly going off the script to salute my brave king, who is here with his beloved queen in spite of the fact that he is under treatment for cancer," the centenarian declared.
Camilla looked at her husband sitting next to her and appeared to wipe away a tear. Applause also erupted from the crowd of around 1,500 guests.
Mr Abbas, who has battled cancer, added that he hoped his own 25-year remission from the disease would bring "comfort" to the King, offering a shared understanding of the health challenges faced.
He added: 'I salute him for gracing this occasion, because by his presence here, he has gone a long way to make sure that his grandad's 14th Army is never given the sobriquet again of The Forgotten Army.'
The ceremony was hosted by actress Celia Imrie and featured readings by actor Robert Lindsay and veterans, as well as musical performances from the National Children's Choir of Great Britain, Jennifer Pike and the Royal Corps of Signals Pipes and Drums.
Ahead of the service, the King, in a pre-recorded audio address to the nation, vowed that the sacrifice of heroes who fought and died in the campaigns 'shall never be forgotten'.
He also significantly acknowledged the devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which led to Japan's surrender, describing the 'immense price' paid by its citizens as one 'we pray no nation need ever pay again'.
He said: 'Please know that the courage and camaraderie displayed in humanity's darkest hour is a flame that shall blaze for eternity – a beacon that honours our past and guides our future.'
After the service of remembrance, which started with a two-minute silence and a Red Arrows flypast, the King made his way to the Far East corner of the arboretum, where he met Silas Sarbah and Khadak Chettri, the grandsons of Second World War soldiers, as well as William Slim, the great-grandson of General Bill Slim, who led the so-called Forgotten Army.
He viewed tributes at the Burma Railway memorial, which is constructed from 30 metres of original track from the so-called 'Railway of Death', and took a moment of reflection at the Burma Star Memorial and the Chindit Memorial, before heading to a reception for VJ veterans and their families.
The King and Queen were joined by the Prime Minister and Lady Starmer, as they met some 30 veterans who served in the Far East during the Second World War for the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces, accompanied by their families and carers.

Elizabeth Hurley reveals boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus is teaching her how to play the guitar - as country singer pens 'sexy songs' inspired by her

She has been busy promoting her new show, Channel 4 's The Inheritance, whilst simultaneously pushing her capsule collection for her beachwear range. So it would be easy to think Elizabeth Hurley is too busy to take on anymore projects, yet it seems when it comes to her new boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus, she will always find the time. The pair who went public with their relationship at Easter seem to be getting closer and closer as the weeks go by. The actress and model, 60, revealed on Friday that musician Billy, 63, has been teaching her how to play the guitar. Dressed in a white gown, adorned with lace, Elizabeth shared some sweet shots of her sat on a swing by a tree, clutching onto an acoustic guitar. With her brunette hair blowing in the wind, the TV star couldn't hide the smile from her face, as she held onto the instrument confidently, with her fingers and thumbs expertly placed as if about to break out into a melody. In another image, she could be seen sat barefooted on the grassy floor, flashing some thigh as she posed with it across her body. Alongside the post, Elizabeth penned: 'My patient boyfriend is attempting to teach me the guitar ❤️❤️❤️ (and yes, he's going to replace the missing string) ❤️❤️❤️' In a sweet gesture of encouragement, Billy posted in comments and on his own stories writing: 'My girl is getting good on that guitar. ❤️ Definitely doing my June. We be going to Jackson this fall!!!!' He then added: '@elizabethhurley is Hotter than a pepper sprout!' Famous friends flocked to Elizabeth's comment section, including her 23-year-old son Damian from a previous relationship, Lizzie Cundy and others writing: 'Aww love this ❤️❤️❤️' ... 'Love this ❤️' and 'It suits you so well' It comes after the country music singer has been writing 'sexy' love songs abouthis new lover. A source told the Daily Mail: 'His next album will include songs that are about Elizabeth for sure, he is definitely smitten with his new love and she has become his muse.' In her caption Elizabeth described Billy as 'patient' with her, whereas in a sweet gesture of encouragement, Billy said she was 'getting good' before adding that she was hotter than a pepper sprout 'Billy is always working on new music, but lately he has been doing even more love songs and it's clear why. He is very happy with Elizabeth, she is motivating him in a very big way. The songs are all about how she "heals" him and how sexy she is.' And the father of Miley Cyrus has also been teaching the Austin Powers actress how to sing like a Country Western songbird. The source added: 'He feels she can sing, that singing is in her future, and maybe even a duet with him.' The brunette beauty has sung in a movie before: with pal Patsy Kensit in the 1990 film Kill Cruise, where they performed the song You're Leaving Me. Hurley has appeared in music videos too. They were for Bryan Adams' song Never Let You Go and Adele's Send My Love (To Your New Lover).' Cyrus and Hurley have become serious ever since they went public on Easter after many years of friendship. Billy has already praised Elizabeth as a 'great human being'. They met while filming 2022's Christmas In Paradise. In a clip from The Ty Bentli Show, Cyrus said: 'We did very few scenes together but the couple times we were in the same scene there was a chemistry there. We just laughed, and it was at a time I wasn't laughing a lot. 'The oddest part was first, how much we laughed. Second, I figured we were so different but in some very strange way we had way more in common than we had different. 'If all we ever were [is] the friends that we are, I would take that. She's so impressively brilliant. She reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton. She's a very smart businesswoman. 'If you can laugh together, you can make it through everything.' While the pair met on the movie set, they didn't speak to each other for two years after shooting the film. But Elizabeth re-entered the crooner's life when he needed a friend, following his split from wife Firerose. He shared: 'I felt like, "Wow, can life get any harder? Can it get any tougher?" For me, at a certain point it was like, you can't get knocked down any flatter than laying on your back when life is kicking you. And in this moment... a friend reached out.' Billy didn't recognise the number at first, so he texted Elizabeth back. He recalled: 'I text back, I go, "Who is this?" And it's like, "Elizabeth Hurley." Of all the people to reach out to me in that second that maybe I needed most... this friend who made me laugh.' The Bedazzled star - - shocked fans when she announced she was dating the Achy Breaky Heart hitmaker.

Record-breaking rowers face eating raw fish as they battle Pacific

Three Scottish brothers who are attempting to break the world record for the fastest unsupported row across the Pacific Ocean say they face eating raw fish straight from the sea as their food rations are dwindling. Four months into their attempt, Ewan, 33, Jamie, 31, and Lachlan Maclean, 27, said they would have to start fishing from their boat after a series of 'nightmare' delays depleted their limited food supplies. Since April the trio have been using a gas-powered stove to heat and rehydrate meals but it is likely to run out of fuel shortly. Requesting fresh provisions would disrupt their record attempt. 'The last month has been so hard because the weather has been fighting against us, we're on a knife-edge now,' Lachlan Maclean said. 'We have a fishing rod to use as emergency backup if we run out of food, but if we were to catch fish, we would have to eat them raw.' It has been four months since the brothers from Edinburgh embarked on the 14,000km row from Peru to Australia to raise £1 million for clean water projects in Madagascar. They have been rowing in two-hour shifts around the clock in an attempt to become the first team to row the Pacific Ocean nonstop and completely unsupported. They have already raised more than £590,000 and drawn widespread support from celebrities such as the actors Mark Wahlberg and Ewan McGregor, the rugby star Blair Kinghorn and Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist. The voyage is the second rowing challenge by the Macleans to make headlines. In 2020, the brothers broke three world records when they crossed the Atlantic Ocean, despite never having rowed seriously before. The brothers, who credit their holistic Steiner schooling with giving them an appetite for adventure, made the journey in 35 days, nine hours and nine minutes, beating the previous record by almost a week. However, despite their formidable record at sea, the Macleans admit that their latest feat is the hardest thing they have ever done. They have been forced to shelter from a cyclone and battle against northern winds that threaten to push them above Australia and towards Papua New Guinea. The brothers had to row three-up for 14 hours straight just to skirt New Caledonia, while dodging storms, reefs, marlins and sharks. However, they are adamant that they are remaining 'chipper' aboard their specially designed carbon-fibre vessel. Lachlan said: 'The flipside of hardship of like this is that fundraising always goes better when you're suffering a bit. Over the past month our campaign has really taken off so that's been keeping our morale really high in these challenging moments.'
