Delhi Chief Minister Flags Irregularities In Widow Pension And Disability Aid
Chairing a crucial meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, Chief Minister Gupta said government aid meant for the most vulnerable was being misused and promised corrective action.
"Many women who were not eligible were granted pensions unchecked. Our government will not allow such malpractice," Chief Minister Gupta told senior officials from the Department of Social Welfare and the Department for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. "Those who truly need help will get it. But those found ineligible will be removed from the list."
The remarks come amid rising concerns over transparency in the city's social safety net. The Chief Minister accused the former AAP government of "cheating the underprivileged" and turning a blind eye to lapses that allowed benefits to flow to ineligible individuals.
A key reform discussed during the meeting was the rollout of digital ID cards for persons with disabilities (PwDs) to tighten beneficiary records. Officials were also directed to address long delays in issuing disability certificates and streamline coordination between departments.
Among the schemes under review is the Financial Assistance for Senior Citizens programme, which pays Rs 2,000 - Rs 2,500 a month to over four lakh beneficiaries, mainly from scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) and low-income groups. The PwD scheme, covering roughly 1.34 lakh individuals, also faces scrutiny over outdated records and inconsistencies in documentation.
The Delhi Family Benefit Scheme (DFBS), which offers one-time assistance of Rs 20,000 to families who lose their main earning member, has supported around 1,100 dependants to date. SMILE, a scheme aimed at rehabilitating individuals involved in begging, offers shelter, medical help, counselling, skills training, and livelihood support.
Ms Gupta said the government's role goes beyond direct cash aid. "Welfare is not just about handing out money, it also means rehabilitation, education, and livelihood support," she said. The Chief Minister has directed the departments to prioritise data accuracy, digitisation, and faster grievance redressal mechanisms.
Officials now have two weeks to submit updated beneficiary lists, with field audits expected to follow. With budgets stretched and public scrutiny rising, the administration faces a key question- can it clean up the system and get support to those who truly need it?

India's response has been mature and measured.'On the broader market outlook, Vijayakumar said, 'The market is unlikely to panic but weakness will continue in the near-term. Since uncertainty is high investors should be cautious in their approach. At least in the near-term, export-oriented sectors will remain weak. She was speaking at a Raksha Bandhan event at the Mukhyamantri Jan Seva Kendra, where she celebrated the festival with schoolchildren. This is the first time the chief minister is celebrating the festival since assuming office in February. Children from various schools participated in the celebration and tied handmade rakhis to Gupta. The CM said Raksha Bandhan is a sacred festival that symbolises the bond of love between brothers and sisters. 'This is my first Raksha Bandhan as the chief minister and I chose to celebrate it with children. It is my responsibility to protect Delhi and work for its progress," she said. With 35,333 Km In 3 Years, National Highway Push Generates 107 Crore Man-Days Of Employment
Last Updated: A man-day is a unit of measurement representing the amount of work performed by one person in a single working day, typically considered as eight hours of labour India has built an impressive 35,335 kilometres of National Highways in the past three years and the ongoing fiscal year. This infrastructure boom generated nearly 49 crore man-days of direct employment and around 58 crore man-days of indirect jobs, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Union minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday in separate replies that highway development projects are known to generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities across various phases such as land acquisition, construction, material supply, transportation, consultancy, and later through increased economic activity resulting from improved connectivity. 'As per a study conducted by the government through IIT Kanpur on employment creation effects of highway construction, it has been estimated that development of each lane km of a highway generates about 4,500 person days of direct employment and 5,300 person days of indirect employment," the ministry said in one of the replies. Speaking about Bihar, the minister said it is estimated that approximately 3.16 crore person-days of direct and approximately 3.72 crore person-days of indirect employment has been generated in the last five years through the national highway projects in Bihar. In Tamil Nadu, the government has constructed 2,685 km of NHs since April 2021, with estimated 3.61 crore man-days of direct employment and 4.26 crore man-days of indirect employment apart from 42.18 crore man-days of induced employment. Gadkari also added that the infrastructure sector contributes to faster economic growth and development. 'Capex incurred on development of NHs is one of the prime mover of the economy contributing to the faster economic growth and development," he added. The government has taken up development of access-controlled National High Speed Corridors and Expressways in total 8,391 km length, out of which 5,110 km has been constructed so far. 'A total of 2,730 km length of access controlled National HSCs/Expressways has already been operationalised," he added.
