Duke, UConn highlight round one, day two of the NCAA Tournament
USA TODAY Sports' Jordan Mendoza highlights Friday's top two round one NCAA Tournament games.
Sports Seriously
It only took so long for the first day of the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament to find one of its early stars.
While helping his Creighton team race out to a 49-34 halftime lead against Louisville Thursday, guard Steven Ashworth served as the catalyst for a red-hot Bluejays squad that made nine of its first 16 3-pointers. Ashworth led the way with 13 points while making three of his six 3-point attempts, some of which came from well beyond the arc.
As is the case with any March Madness hero, interest in Ashworth soon extended beyond the court.

CBS cameras at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky for the first-round matchup between No. 8 and No. 9 seeds cut to the crowd, where they showed Ashworth's son, Tommy Jay, and his wife, Peyton.
Understandably, a college basketball player being married and having a son raised some questions about Ashworth's age. Here's what you need to know about Ashworth, his age and his college basketball career:
Steven Ashworth age
Ashworth is 24 years old, and will turn 25 on May 1.
Ashworth is in his fifth season of playing college basketball, a lengthy career that was made possible by receiving a waiver from the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility because he played during the COVID-19-impacted 2020-21 season.
He got a late start to his college career, though. Ashworth is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, before enrolling in college, served as a missionary.
After that, Ashworth began his college career in 2020 at Utah State when he was 20 years old. An Alpine, Utah native, Ashworth played his first three seasons at Utah State before transferring to Creighton after the 2022-23 season.
Ashworth married his wife, Peyton, three years ago and the couple had a son, Tommy Jay, who was born in June 2024.

Steven Ashworth stats
This season, Ashworth is averaging 16.3 points, 6.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 38.9% from the field and 36.9% from 3, with the overwhelming majority of his shot attempts coming from beyond the arc. For his career, Ashworth is a 38.4% shooter from 3.
Additionally, he's shooting 92.6% from the free-throw line this season, the fifth-best mark among all Division I players.
Ashworth finished his team's 89-75 victory against Louisville with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists while making four of his eight 3s.

Gopher women's soccer building off momentum from last season to find more success
The University of Minnesota Gopher women's soccer season kicks off on Thursday night at home against a Big 12 powerhouse: Brigham Young University. The Gophers are back at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in Falcon Heights for a new season with a lot in their favor. Head coach Erin Chastain is starting her fifth year with the team, signing a contract extension through 2028. "I love Minnesota. I played here. This is home for me, so I think the fact that our administration supports us and supports me really just makes my job easier when I come to work everyday," Chastain said. The Gophers are planning to build off of last season's success, making it to the NCAA Sweet 16 after an undefeated regular season at home. New captains Caroline Birdsell and Kate Childers say the standard set last year will carry over this fall. "No matter the score, we always came out first half, second half ready to win. And we knew we could win any game and we're definitely going to bring that this year because obviously it worked well last year," Birdsell said. "I think just some words that we like to live by are like 'relentless,' just in every game, every practice, workout, all of the above," Childers said. While this team has the benefit of a lot of momentum from last season's success, they also lost half of their roster from graduates and transfers — while gaining 13 new players. "I wouldn't consider that a bad thing. I think that we have enough returners where our core values and the team we are will not change," Birdsell said. "We also had a lot of younger players waiting in the wings and learning and competing, and so I think they're ready to show what they're capable of, so we're excited to see kind of their hard work pay off," Chastain said.

Big 12 becomes final Power Four conference to start issuing player availability reports
The Big 12 will release player availability reports for football and men's and women's basketball before all conference games, the conference announced Wednesday. Beginning this season, Big 12 football teams will submit daily injury and player availability reports starting three days before each conference game. Players will be designated as available, probable, questionable, doubtful or out. Men's and women's basketball teams will submit reports the night before conference games, listing players as either available, game-time decision or out. Final reports are due 90 minutes before the start of each game. The other Power Four conferences already issue availability reports. The Big Ten introduced the reports for football and men's and women's basketball in 2023. The Southeastern Conference followed suit in 2024, and the Atlantic Coast Conference began issuing the reports in July, including baseball on the list of participating sports. The moves by the conferences are intended in part to curtail harassment of athletes by bettors seeking information about injuries or availability. The Big 12 will release reports on the conference website. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and
