Indian equity benchmarks fell sharply on Monday, with the Sensex and Nifty trading lower amid selling pressure in metal and IT stocks. The weakness overshadowed India's strong GDP growth figures, as global cues remained mixed and investors turned cautious ahead of key U.S. macroeconomic data.At around 9:42 am, the BSE Sensex had declined 704 points, or 0.86%, to 80,747, while the Nifty50 was down 168 points, or 0.68%, at 24,585.The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies dropped by Rs 2.06 lakh crore to Rs 442.13 lakh crore. The Nifty Metal index led the losses with a 1.4% decline, while the Nifty IT index fell 1.25%, weighed down by concerns over the U.S. economy and trade policy. Broader markets also remained under pressure, with small-cap and mid-cap indices slipping 0.3% each.India's economy had posted a strong 7.4% GDP growth in the January–March quarter, driven by manufacturing and construction. However, that optimism failed to lift sentiment amid external headwinds.Market sentiment turned sour after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50%, effective June 4, 2025. This move is expected to adversely affect Indian metal exporters like Tata Steel Hindalco , and NALCO , which have significant exposure to the U.S. market.India exported $4.56 billion worth of iron, steel, and aluminium products to the U.S. in FY2025. The tariff escalation, though not immediately impacting trade, has added uncertainty and is weighing on stocks in the metal sector."President Trump's 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium is a clear message that the tariff and trade scenario will continue to be uncertain and turbulent. This headwind will impact markets," said Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments.Asian and European markets showed signs of stress as investors grappled with the implications of escalating U.S.-China trade tensions. Japan's Nikkei dropped 1.4%, Hong Kong lost 2.5%, and U.S. futures also edged lower — with S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures down up to 0.5%.Markets are also uncertain about whether the U.S. will follow through with the tariff hike, creating additional volatility. While some regional indices like South Korea's gained slightly due to political optimism, the overall sentiment remained cautious. Also Read: India's top 10 priciest stocks in 2025: MRF to Elcid, see who tops the list Investors are bracing for a heavy week of macroeconomic updates from the U.S., especially the non-farm payrolls report and Federal Reserve commentary, which could influence the path of interest rates. The U.S. Senate is also set to consider a $3.8 trillion tax-and-spending bill, adding to concerns about the country's ballooning $36.2 trillion federal debt. As a result, long-term U.S. Treasury yields are nearing the critical 5% mark, which is adding to pressure on global equity markets.Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Monday indicated that rate cuts are still possible this year, but much will depend on incoming data. For now, markets are pricing in a 75% chance of a rate cut in September, though the Fed has not explicitly confirmed this view.Back home, selling was broad-based across sectors. Metal and IT stocks, which have global exposure, were among the hardest hit, reflecting external risks. Additionally, 10 of the 13 major sectoral indices on the NSE opened in the red.Even strong domestic data — with India's Q4 GDP growth at 7.4% — was not enough to support markets. Investors appear to be locking in gains after recent highs, as global uncertainties loom large over the near-term outlook.Fresh geopolitical concerns also weighed on investor sentiment after Ukraine launched drone attacks on five airbases deep inside Russian territory, reportedly destroying several aircraft. The incident comes just ahead of a scheduled peace summit in Turkey, raising fears of a possible escalation in the conflict if Russia retaliates.Any intensification of the Russia-Ukraine war could disrupt global supply chains, especially in energy and commodities, leading to renewed volatility in global markets. Also Read: Ola Electric, Kalyan Jewellers among 10 firms where promoters pledge increased in Q4

US-backed Gaza aid group names evangelical as chairman

* GHF says it has delivered some 7 million meals in Gaza * UN refuses to work with GHF, says aid distribution militarized * Israel accuses Hamas of stealing aid, Hamas denies it UNITED NATIONS, - The U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation on Tuesday named as its executive chairman an American evangelical Christian leader who has publicly backed President Donald Trump's proposal for the United States to take over the Palestinian enclave. The appointment of Rev. Dr. Johnnie Moore, a former evangelical adviser to the White House during Trump's first term in office, came as health officials said at least 27 people died and more than 150 were injured trying to reach a GHF aid site. "GHF is demonstrating that it is possible to move vast quantities of food to people who need it most — safely, efficiently, and effectively," Moore said in the foundation statement. "GHF believes that serving the people of Gaza with dignity and compassion must be the top priority." The GHF began operations one week ago under a distribution model criticized by the United Nations as the militarization of aid. The GHF says so far it has given out seven million meals from so-called secure distribution sites. It uses private U.S. security and logistics companies to get aid into Gaza. The U.N. and aid groups have refused to work with the GHF because they say it is not a neutral operation. U.N. aid chief Tom Fletcher has said it "makes aid conditional on political and military aims" and uses starvation as "a bargaining chip." The appointment of Moore could fuel U.N. concerns, given his support for the controversial proposal Trump floated in February for the U.S. to take over Gaza and develop it economically. After Trump proposed the idea, Moore posted video of Trump's remarks on X and wrote: "The USA will take full responsibility for future of Gaza, giving everyone hope & a future." 'BAD GUYS' The U.N. did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the appointment of Moore, who has accused the U.N. of ignoring "bad guys" stealing aid in Gaza. The U.N. has long-blamed Israel and lawlessness in the enclave for impediments getting aid into Gaza and distributing throughout the war zone. Israel has long accused Hamas of stealing aid, which the group denies. In a reference to the new GHF-led aid model, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week said Israel was "taking control of food distribution" in Gaza. "The @UN & others should clean up their act & work with America," Moore posted on May 26. "Surely, these old U.S. & E.U.-funded humanitarian orgs won't let people starve in exchange for being 'right' when they know what they have done hasn't worked & has, in fact, made a terrible war worse?" The war in Gaza has raged since 2023 after Hamas militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in an October 7 attack and took some 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies, and Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Moore visited Israel about three months after the 2023 Hamas attack and wrote: "Never have I seen such horror." Just a couple of weeks later, he posted a video titled "Come visit beautiful Gaza," which sought to portray Gaza as a tourist destination if it wasn't for Hamas militants. Trump has said Gaza has the potential to be "The Riviera of the Middle East." The United Nations has long endorsed a vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, all territory captured by Israel in a 1967 war with neighboring Arab states.

Absence of devotees at Sangam impacting livelihood of boatmen

Prayagraj: The ongoing summer and sultry weather conditions seem to have left their impact on the turnout of the pilgrims and devotees at Sangam as the banks of Ganga are witnessing a thin attendance of devotees and pilgrims from all across the country, impacting the livelihood of boatmen. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Although the boatmen claim to have earned hefty profits during Maha Kumbh, they are now finding few takers. President of Prayagraj Navik Sangh, Pappu Nishad, told TOI, "The ongoing summer season has hit the turnout as there is limited attendance of devotees and pilgrims flocking to Sangam and hiring boats to take holy dips and perform rituals. In the current scenario, a limited section of devotees travelling to Sangam are from Varanasi or Ayodhya. Those arriving in Varanasi or Ayodhya to seek blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Ram often plan their tours to Sangam in Prayagraj to take holy dips and perform rituals. " However, the strength of such devotees is very limited and directly impacting the income of boatmen. In the current scenario, a boatman is charging Rs 50 for a devotee to ferry a pilgrim from Quila Ghat to Sangam, and the rate from other ghats to Sangam is more or less. Shantanu, a boatman, told TOI, "Around 75% of all around 1,500 boatmen in and around Prayagraj earn their livelihoods by catering to the pilgrims at the limited attendance of visitors who arrive at Sangam to take holy dips, boatmen are fighting to earn big earnings. The strength of devotees has declined since the temperature crossed 42 degrees Celsius." Rakesh, another boatman, asserted, "We are hardly able to manage better earnings by catering to the few visitors who arrive either to take holy dips or to immerse the mortal remains." A section of boatmen who were earlier engaged in ferrying pilgrims during the season are planning to do some other work to earn a livelihood.

Nashik civic body starts repairing city roads, fills over 6,000 potholes in a week

Nashik: With the rain taking a break, the Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) public works department has commenced extensive road repair operations across the city. The civic administration announced on Tuesday that it had successfully filled 6,226 potholes across the six divisions within the last week alone. These crucial road repair efforts began ahead of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's two-day visit to Nashik city on Sunday and Monday. During his visit, the chief minister travelled through various city roads while attending multiple programmes. The condition of roads in Nashik had significantly worsened due to continuous heavy rainfall last month, posing considerable risks to motorists. Furthermore, roads excavated by Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) for laying piped natural gas pipelines added to the deterioration. While the NMC had initially planned to begin repair works from May 15, persistent showers prevented these efforts. Now, with the rainfall having ceased, the civic body has been able to fully embark on its road repair agenda. An NMC official, while talking to TOI, said they conducted a fresh survey of the city roads and found around 9,000 potholes in various parts of the city. "So far, we have filled 6,226 potholes and the remaining will be repaired shortly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now At 3,831, most potholes were repaired in the Panchavati division followed by over 2,800 potholes in the Cidco division," the official said. "The roads that were dug up by the MNGL and other agencies for various purposes deteriorated the road conditions of most of the city roads. We have also started repairs of such roads. We also gave work orders to the agencies concerned for road repairs and resurfacing of some stretches of the city roads amounting to Rs 90 crore," the official added The official said all the city roads are to be repaired in the next couple of weeks.
