Thyroid disorders rising, say speakers
Thyroid gland is like a battery in the body, which provides energy to various organs. Thyroid disorders affect people cutting across age and gender and have significant implications on functioning of several vital organs in body including heart, brain, kidney, bone, intestine and reproductive organs. The prevalence is around 9-15 per cent, with females, elderly, the ones with diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and depression being prone to this ailment, the speakers said.
Periodic updates of the doctors involved in the care of people having thyroid disorders are important, they said.
The conference was organised by Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Consultant Endocrinologist from Swasthya Sadan, Berhampur in association with IMA Berhampur.

Far-off NEET PG 2025 exam centres spark concern among medical candidates
With the NEET-PG exam scheduled for August 3, several candidates have raised alarm over being assigned test centres in states far from their hometowns. The Indian Medical Association–Junior Doctors' Network (IMA-JDN) has written to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, urging immediate intervention to address the association highlighted that while some students received centres close to home, a large number have been allotted venues in distant states, forcing them to undertake long and costly journeys. 'This situation is deeply concerning, particularly for candidates from economically weaker families, women, and those living in remote or rural regions,' the IMA-JDN noted in a body has requested the Health Ministry to instruct the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to reopen the exam centre change portal, allowing candidates to choose centres closer to their place of residence. It warned that such disparities not only affect fairness but may also impact students' mental health and their performance in this high-stakes, once-a-year test. On July 21, the NBEMS released exam intimation slips, with admit cards set to be issued on July 31. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will take up on August 3 a set of petitions questioning the transparency of the NEET-PG evaluation system.A bench of Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria briefly heard the matter, which includes calls for the release of question papers, answer keys, and detailed response sheets. The Indian Medical Association–Junior Doctors' Network (IMA–JDN) has submitted an urgent representation to Union Health Minister J P Nadda, voicing serious concerns regarding the allotment of NEET-PG examination centres. This comes in response to widespread complaints from aspirants across the country who have been assigned test centres in distant states, sparking distress and anxiety among candidates. With the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test–Postgraduate (NEET-PG) scheduled for 3 August, the IMA–JDN has appealed to the Union Health Ministry to instruct the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to reopen the portal for changing exam centres. This would allow affected candidates the opportunity to select centres closer to their home state or within nearby regions. In its representation, the IMA–JDN underlined that while some students have been allotted centres in nearby cities, thousands of others have been assigned locations in far-flung states, requiring them to undertake long, expensive, and stressful journeys to unfamiliar places. The doctors' body stated, 'This move is causing much concern, especially among the economically weaker sections, ladies, and those from remote or rural regions." 'This disparity not only affects fairness but could negatively impact students' mental well-being and performance in this critical, once-a-year exam," it said. 'IMA–JDN remains committed to ensuring equity and accessibility in all aspects of medical education and examination systems," the doctors' body added. In the meantime, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on 21 July issued the exam intimation slips for NEET PG 2025. The admit cards for NEET PG 2025 are scheduled to be released on 31 July. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court of India has fixed 3 August to hear a batch of petitions related to the transparency of the NEET PG examination process. A bench comprising Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria briefly took up the matter, which centres on issues concerning the release of answer keys and the evaluation mechanism followed by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). One of the petitions, filed through advocate Tanvi Dubey, challenges the lack of transparency in the assessment process and seeks various directions to be issued to the NBE. Emphasis laid on continuous medical edu for doctors
Nandyal: A one-day regional medical science conference, jointly organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Andhra Pradesh and the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council, was successfully held on Sunday at Soujanya Convention Hall in Nandyal on Sunday. The event was inaugurated by Dr Chandrasekhar, Vice-Chancellor of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, along with Dr D Srihari Rao, Chairman of AP Medical Council. The dignitaries paid floral tributes to Dr B C Roy, the father of Indian medicine, before lighting the ceremonial lamp. Dr. Chandrasekhar emphasised the importance of continuous medical education to keep up with advancements in modern healthcare. Dr Srihari Rao stressed that doctors must renew their medical registration every five years by attending CME programmes and accumulating 30 credit points. He warned of strict action against unqualified practitioners exceeding their permitted roles. Dr G Nanda Kishore, IMA State president, highlighted IMA's commitment to public health through over 100 local branches. Organising Chairman Dr. Ravi Krishna and IMA Nandyal President Dr Madhusudhana Rao stated that such conferences greatly benefit regional doctors by enhancing awareness of medical advancements. Eminent doctors from reputed hospitals like Apollo, Omega Cancer Hospital, and Yashoda Hospital delivered lectures on various health topics, contributing to the academic success of the event.
