MAHB: KLIA, Penang Airport add five new routes, strengthen Malaysia's aviation hub status
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said in a statement that two of the new services were introduced by new airline partners, enhancing cross-border connectivity and regional access.
Cambodia Airways (KR) launched a twice-weekly service between Phnom Penh and PEN, while Juneyao Air (HO) began operating four weekly flights from Shanghai to KLIA, boosting travel options for passengers from China and the wider East Asia region.
In addition, MAHB said three new routes were introduced by existing airline partners, reflecting continued confidence in Malaysia's aviation market.
'Batik Air Malaysia commenced a twice-weekly service between KLIA and Dili, Timor-Leste; AirAsia Cambodia introduced a thrice-weekly route connecting KLIA to Sihanoukville; and AirAsia began operating four weekly flights between KLIA and Darwin, Australia,' MAHB said.
In June, MAHB including its asset in Turkiye, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISG) handled a total of 12.7 million passenger movements.
'Of this, local airports in Malaysia contributed 68 per cent or 8.5 million passenger movements, comprising 4.2 million international and 4.3 million domestic travellers. ISG recorded 4.1 million total passenger movements, comprising 2.2 million international and 1.9 million domestic in June,' MAHB said.
Meanwhile, on the local front, MAHB said Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) posted notable month-on-month growth in June, with passenger movements rising 9 per cent from 138,000 in May to 151,000.
The airport operator noted that international traffic at SZB grew by over 10 per cent to 40,000 passengers, while domestic movements climbed nearly 9 per cent to 111,000.
MAHB attributed this upward trend to strong average load factors of over 70 per cent on key regional routes operated by Firefly Airlines to Seletar, Scoot to Changi, and TransNusa Airlines to Jakarta.
While the increased domestic travel was also spurred by the harvest festival in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as Hari Raya Haji celebrations coinciding with school holidays. — Bernama

This marks the second major disruption since the aerotrain's highly anticipated return to service, with the first breakdown occurring just one day after the July 1 relaunch. The initial malfunction was initially attributed to a passenger allegedly holding doors open, causing the system to jam. However, MAHB later clarified that water accumulation in the tunnel due to heavy rainfall was the actual cause, necessitating manual clearing operations and safety inspections before services could resume. The aerotrain system, which had been KLIA's primary internal transport link since 1998, was out of service from early 2023, forcing passengers to rely on shuttle buses for connectivity between the main terminal and satellite building used primarily for international flights. The recurring technical issues have raised serious questions about the upgrade project's execution and the system's long-term reliability, particularly given the substantial public investment involved.

Estimates of higher supplies in the Southeast Asian nation, coupled with sluggish demand from overseas buyers, could weigh on benchmark prices at a time of the high production cycle, which typically peaks in October. Still, a brighter outlook for purchases from top buyer India ahead of local festivals, as well as robust biodiesel consumption in Indonesia, has cushioned prices recently. Benchmark palm oil futures closed 0.4% higher at RM4,245 a tonne in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. That followed an increase of more than 6% in July – the biggest monthly jump since February. Crude palm oil production last month rose 8.3% to 1.83 million tonnes, the highest level in 11 months, the survey showed. That compared with a decline of 4.5% in June. Exports increased 3.2%, according to the poll. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board will publish its monthly data on Aug 11. 'Stockpiles are expected to rise due to a jump in Malaysian production and lower domestic consumption in July,' said Anilkumar Bagani, head of research at Mumbai-based Sunvin Group. 'Still, a level above 2 million tonnes during the peak production season may not be too 'burdensome to prices', especially when Indonesian palm oil supplies are tight because of high blending rates with petroleum,' he said. More from the survey: Stockpile estimates ranged between 2.09 million and 2.49 million tonnes, while production was seen between 1.7 million and 1.87 million tonnes. Export forecasts were between 1.15 million tonnes and 1.45 million tonnes. Imports were seen at 50,000 tonnes, below 70,015 tonnes in June. Local consumption was between 250,000 tonnes and 450,000 tonnes.
