Tyler Walker faces heartbreak as brother and nephew go missing in Texas floods while Astros owner Jim Crane donates $1 million
The Fourth of July holiday weekend became disastrous for so many in Central Texas, as flash flooding swept through the region with widespread destruction. Among the missing are a former MLB pitcher's brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, Tyler Walker.
With a $1 million donation to help with recovery efforts, the Houston Astros reacted to the disaster. Their gesture merges with the rising tide of Texas-based companies and teams rallying for relief and long-term reconstruction.
Tyler Walker's family is still unaccounted for as rescue operations persist
Former San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Tyler Walker is waiting out an unimaginable uncertainty. His brother Mark, sister-in-law Sharkey, and young nephew Johnny remain unaccounted for since the floodwaters moved swiftly through the Texas Hill Country.
Riverside River water rose 26 feet in one hour, ravaging communities and campsites like Camp Mystic, where more than 10 campers remain unaccounted for. Angela Walker Murphy, a cousin of Tyler, issued a public call for help to assist in recovering her relatives.
The extent of the tragedy has ignited debate regarding the absence of early warning systems and emergency preparedness in Kerr County. While families such as the Walkers keep hope alive, emergency officials boost search and rescue efforts in submerged areas.

With combined contributions totaling over $3.5 million, this effort builds on a wave of generosity from other Texas companies including the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys. Other companies that have also been very helpful for reaction include H-E-B and Whataburger.
The Astros have further started a fan outreach initiative to encourage ongoing public support, making sure assistance doesn't falter with the news cycle.

Correa plays 1st game in Houston since trade as Bregman visits for 1st time since joining Red Sox
HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman were back at Daikin Park on Monday. HT Image But while Correa was making his triumphant return home after the recent blockbuster trade that brought him back to the Houston Astros from the Minnesota Twins, Bregman was in the ballpark for the first time as a visitor after signing with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Monday is the opener of a three-game series between the teams. 'That adds an extra little bit of what it's going to mean for our fans,' Houston manager Joe Espada said. 'Both players, what they've done for this organization, it's incredible, right? Bregman, he's one of the best players that ever wore this uniform, and now we get Carlos back, coming in here and (helping) us win the division. It's going to be electric here.' Bregman, drafted second overall by the Astros in 2015, spent his first nine seasons in Houston where he helped the team to eight playoff berths, including seven trips to the AL Championship Series, four World Series appearances and two championships. The third baseman was named an All-Star twice in Houston, won a Gold Glove last season and a Silver Slugger Award in 2019 when he came in second in AL MVP voting. Bregman was asked about the timing of them both returning to Houston on the same day. 'I was shocked at the news during the trade deadline and it was awesome and it looks like he's fit right back in,' Bregman said. 'He's a great player, a leader, great teammate. It's always difficult to compete against him because he's such a good competitor, but we're gonna give it our best shot today.' Correa, who waived his no-trade clause to return to Houston, is back after playing for the Twins since 2022. The top pick in the 2012 draft, he spent his first eight seasons with the Astros, pairing with Bregman for many of those years to transform the Astros from league laughingstock to perennial contender. He's been great in the nine games since the trade and entered Monday batting .405 with 15 hits, including two homers and six RBIs. He said returning to the team where his career began after being gone for four years is surreal. 'It's a second chance to come back here and put on this uniform and it's a chance that I will never take for granted,' he said. 'I'm gonna go out there and give it my best every single day I go out there.' Correa, who has been slowed by injuries in recent years, said he's feeling rejuvenated since rejoining the Astros and moving to third base after spending his entire career playing shortstop. 'Being at third base I don't get as tired, so I feel like my legs are a lot fresher,' he said. Bregman, who spent years playing third base in Houston while Correa was at shortstop, has no doubt that he'll excel at his new position. 'He's going to do great over there,' Bregman said. 'He's got an incredible arm. We always used to say if he catches the ball, the guy is out because of how good the arm is and he's going to make the transition great. He's a Platinum Glove winner at shortstop, so third base should be pretty easy for him.' Though Bregman faced the Astros recently in Boston when the Red Sox swept a three-game series, he admitted that Monday would be emotional because of all the memories he made here. He spoke of what stuck out to him the most from his time in Houston. 'I'd say the championships and just seeing how resilient the city is and how it comes together when times are tough,' he said. 'And the people are great, my teammates, the coaches, everything, all the memories in the clubhouse, busting our tail trying to find a way to win a baseball game every single day, the everyday grind of it, it was fun for us.' As for Correa, he's soaking up every minute of being back with the team. The best part, he said, is reuniting with close friend and second baseman Jose Altuve. 'As soon as I got to Boston, I gave him a big hug and I told him I missed him,' Correa said. 'He's an unbelievable player, but the human side of it, I get to hang out with him after the games, we get to go eat after the games (and) we just talk shop. It's something that I definitely missed a lot and I get to do it again so I'm not gonna take it for granted.' Altuve shares his sentiments. 'I'm really excited he's back,' he said. 'I really enjoyed my time playing with him and I'm going to enjoy playing with him again and we're all excited about him.' ___ AP MLB:

RCBs Director Of Cricket Joins New Franchise In Same Role; Check Details
The Lord's-based Hundred team will retain the name London Spirit after selling a 49% stake to the Silicon Valley consortium "Tech Titans", with former England performance director Mo Bobat set to take over as director of cricket. "It's an honour to join London Spirit at such an exciting time. The opportunity to shape the cricketing future of this franchise, working with MCC and our new partners, the Tech Titans, is incredibly exciting. I'm looking forward to building something special - on and off the field," Bobat said. MCC has been in talks with its new equity partner for some time and plans to unveil refreshed team branding - potentially incorporating the club's iconic egg-and-bacon colours - ahead of the 2026 season. However, they have chosen to retain the London Spirit name to preserve an identity that embodies "the capital's energy, diversity, and cricketing heritage". Bobat's arrival marks the first major move by any Hundred franchise since the ECB approved six of the eight equity sale agreements last month. He will continue in his IPL role as Royal Challengers Bengaluru's director of cricket while linking up with Spirit from October. London Spirit chairman, Julian Metherell, said, "Today marks a significant moment for London Spirit. Mo Bobat brings unmatched expertise and vision to the role of Director of Cricket, and we're thrilled to welcome him. At the same time, retaining the London Spirit name reflects our belief in the identity that's been built - one that resonates with the capital, our fans, and our values. We now look ahead to a new era, with fresh energy and clear purpose." London Spirit men, led by coach Justin Langer, began their 2025 campaign with a heavy defeat, bowled out for just 80 in front of their new owners. However, they quickly recovered, securing a win over Welsh Fire at the weekend.

Will Ashwin Join RR As Part Of Samson's Trade Deal? Ex-India Spinner Gives Big Update
Last Updated: Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by CSK in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the cash-rich league this year, he played nine matches but was only able to take 7 wickets. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was part of the Chennai Super Kings' team in IPL 2025. He was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the 18th edition of the world's richest franchise cricket league, he picked up seven wickets in nine matches for them in addition to scoring 32 runs with the bat. Ashwin's performance by his own standards was a very forgettable one in the IPL this year, and as a result there were talks about CSK releasing him ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. It was reported last week that Ashwin has asked CSK to release him, and there were also reports that he could join Rajasthan Royals, for whom he played from 2022 to 2024, as part of a trade deal for Sanju Samson. When asked if he is going to be part of CSK in the IPL next year by Vimal Kumar, Ashwin said, 'Mere hath mein kuch nahi hai. Maine sirf clarity manga hai… mera abhi communication kuch hua nahi hai. Clarity toh maine bahut pehle he manga. Maine kya kiya, mera role kaisa hai, mai kaise better kar sakta hu – ye sab sawal maine already puch liya hai kyuki maine last year 9 games khela tha. In all these years of playing in the IPL, that was the first year jisme maine sirf 9 games khela. Hamesha mein har game khela tha, jo bhi franchise ke liye mai khela. So clarity meri taraf se manga maine; IPL ke time par he mang liya tha." 'Abhi tak mujhe koi information nahi hai. Classified information nahi hai ki Sanju idhar (CSK) aa raha hai aur mai udhar (RR) ja raha hu." If CSK decide to trade Samson ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, then the Chennai-based team will have to sign him for Rs 18 crore – the price for which Samson was retained by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Or they can trade him in a player deal, but for that Ashwin won't be enough because Samson's price in IPL 2025 was Rs 18 crore, whereas Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore. CSK will have to give Rs 8.25 crore more to RR in addition to Ashwin or include players worth Rs 8.25 crore more to acquire Samson's services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
