'Bachelors are not criminals': Reddit user exposes discrimination against ‘single' tenants in Ahmedabad

Mint14 hours ago
A recent Reddit post has ignited a fierce debate about the challenges faced by unmarried people seeking suitable accommodation in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
An anonymous user expressed deep frustration and shared their personal experience, claiming that despite maintaining a quiet and respectful lifestyle, the user and their friends who lived together were unfairly targeted and labelled as 'not a good fit' by their housing society.
The user bluntly challenged the common perception of Gujaratis as a 'welcoming,' 'respectful,' and 'non-interfering' community.
The user argued that this image often crumbles when it comes to outsiders who don't have a family in the city. 'You don't even want outsiders here unless they're families with 2 kids and a prayer bell ringing at 6 am every day,' the post stated.
They further questioned why it's so difficult for Gujarati society to accept that these young people are simply living alone to build a future.
The Reddit user said that they livedwith a couple of friends in a society in Ahmedabad and always took extreme precautions toavoidcausing any disturbance. They described maintaining low voices in hallways, avoiding eye contact with other residents and strictly adhering to 'no loud parties, no garbage thrown around, no fights, no parking drama'.
The original poster compared this situation to 'walking on eggshells every day' because they were scared that
"some self-righteous uncle or aunty will just wake up one day and decide we're a bad influence'.
The breaking point came when, without any specific incident or issue, some people in the society got together and labelled the user and their friends as 'not a good fit'.
The user expressed their anger at this arbitrary judgment, questioning, 'Do these people not have children living alone in other cities? Do they not understand that we're also someone's son/daughter out here trying to make something of ourselves?'
The anonymous Redditor emphasised that their experience is not isolated, as many other bachelors face similar discrimination over their marital status in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. 'The moment you mention you're a bachelor, brokers stop responding, society gatekeepers go silent, and landlords start ghosting. Like we're some kind of disease.'
The post ended with the user firmly expressing their love for the city, though its residents needed to be more progressive in their approach. 'I love the city, I love the food, I love the peopleindividually – but as a society, damn, this place needs to pull its head out of the 1970s.'
Most of the comments backed the original poster, while some also shared their personal experiences of living in Ahmedabad.
One user spoke about their time in Gujarat, stating 'When i was in a pg, located in a reputed society...they were not happy about it, just because we were some students trying to figure out what to do with our lives. Anyways despite disputes we survived there for a year...and now that pg is closed Just because they don't want any young blood around.'
Another user who owns a house in Gujarat said, 'You are right bachelors are treated like shit here, I am a flat owner and my society chairman has forced me to give my flat only to families for some absurd reasons and I can't do anything (sic).'
Such incidents posted on social media have prompted some individuals to reject job offers in the city. Sharing a similar incident, a user said, 'I am a bachelor by choice in my thirties, I got a good offer in Ahmedabad but i skipped it after reading reddit threads.'

‘Basic tameez bhi nahi hai': Redditor calls Gurgaon ‘city of entitled people' after road rage incident

A Reddit post has gone viral after a user shared a frustrating incident that left him questioning the basic etiquette of drivers in Gurgaon, which he called the 'City of Entitled People.' The man described how things took a turn for the worse while he was exiting a mall. The service lane outside was already cramped due to cars parked haphazardly on both sides, leaving just a single lane open, he said. Trying to be considerate, he decided to reverse slightly to let an oncoming car through. 'In the interest of keeping things flowing, I did the logical thing – I reversed my car to a spot where there was a bit of space so the oncoming car could pass comfortably,' he explained, calling it a basic gesture of cooperation. However, instead of appreciation, he was met with rage. A man driving a white Creta reportedly began blaring his horn and shouting. 'He not only refuses to wait but rolls down his window and starts shouting at me accusing me of blocking the road!' the user wrote. What made things worse was that the man's car had elderly passengers and children, but that did not stop the aggressor from hurling abuse. Left shocked and angry, he ended his post with a stinging remark: 'Traffic sense toh door ki baat hai, basic tameez bhi nahi hai (forget traffic sense, basic manners are missing)!! Where is this city headed?' The post struck a chord online, sparking outrage and reigniting debates about traffic culture and public behaviour in urban India. A user wrote, 'Bro I have understood this way before in india 90 percent of people are like bugs there life holds no value to the government or the top 10 percent for them your elders your children are just plain insects that are coming in the way and the richer they are the worse it gets.' Another user wrote, 'And being brought up in Gurgaon, I don't understand what kind of people are spending crores to buy flats here.. I think i am blessed that I live in old gurgaon.. Here also people are morons but slightly better than these new Gurgaon side.. Don't worry slowly things will settle,, the money they have made by selling lands will dry as they don't have control anger and sense gratification.. And when traveling with family keep car windows rolled up.' A third person commented, 'Most cold, calculated, uncouth, insensitive and entitled people in the country live here. Make this your home only after deep consideration and if no other option left.' A fourth individual wrote, 'Every day life in this city. This city has no authority, no one is incharge, no government except the usual entitled Jacka*s who think he owns the road and the city in proportion of the money he has.' Another commenter had different thoughts, 'What's this got to do with the city. Terrible experience and I am sorry you had to go through it, but again that guy also might be from some other city, just like most of the people in this city. These days, people in general are no longer humble and think they own everyone. A little bit of money and people lose their mind. But cmon this city has people like you and me as well. Let's blame the root cause and not the city in general.'

Mumbai's love-hate relationship with pigeons: Why thousands are taking to the streets after ban on 'kabutarkhanas'

Synopsis Mumbai's decades-long relationship with pigeons faces upheaval after a court ban on public feeding due to health and heritage concerns. The decision sparked protests from Jain and Gujarati communities, who consider feeding pigeons auspicious. A criminal case has been registered against those defying the ban, while a minister seeks a review, citing starvation concerns. Agencies Several kabutarkhanas have been shut in Mumbai India's financial capital Mumbai has had a love-hate relationship with pigeons for decades. The avian species are synonymous with the city's landscape and are found fluttering around iconic railway stations, the Gateway of India and flocking in feeding areas known as 'kabutarkhanas'. These spots have now been covered with tarpaulin sheets following a July 31 Bombay High Court order banning public feeding of pigeons. This has led to a fresh controversy, protests and even an FIR, all within a week of the order being passed. The Bombay HC directed Mumbai's civic body, BMC to initiate a criminal proceeding on those found feeding pigeons and defying the order. The court cited serious public health hazards, including respiratory infections, and damage to heritage sites due to their droppings, while passing its order. It has also come amid rising pigeon population in the city. However, the order has not pleased animal lover's and the city's powerful Gujarati and Jain communities as they consider feeding pigeons as auspicious, leading way to pigeon politics. The city's love for feeding pigeons is believed to have begun by Gujarati and Jain businessmen, which led to the setting up of kabutarkhanas across major hotspots in Mumbai. These communities considered it to be an act piety and believed it would bring blessings from ancestors. In Jainism, feeding the birds is one of the central tenets and for decades many Jain families have fed pigeons near temples or trust-run feeding spots. However, over 50 such spots have been closed in the last month, including the iconic Dadar kabutarkhana where the BMC installed a bamboo structure to prevent the feeding of has started massive protest by the Jain community. On Sunday, over thousands of activists, animal lovers joined Jain spiritual leaders to march from Colaba Jain Mandir to Gateway of India. Jain monk Nareshchandra Ji Maharaj also announced fast-unto-death unless feeding pigeons becomes legal again. He told TOI that hundreds of pigeons have died of starvation in the last few days. A ban was always in place but it was never legally enforced as no political party wanted to upset the influential Gujarati community and the Jains, who form a large part of the city's on August 3,the first criminal case was registered by the Mumbai police for feeding the issue has now taken a political turn, with Maharashtra minister and BJP MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha writing a letter to the commissioner of Mumbai, expressing concern over the demolition of in his letter, questioned if feeding pigeons were solely responsible for health issues and sought the formation of a court-monitored panel to suggest sustainable solutions."Following the decision to restrict pigeon feeding, there have also been numerous instances of pigeons suffering from starvation. This has resulted in pigeons dying on the roads, thereby creating another public health hazard," Lodha pointed a large urban setting like Mumbai, pigeons are dependent on the food given by people rather than natural sources. A PETA study revealed that more these birds feed, the more they reproduce. While feeding might seem to be harmless, what falls is its health concerns and ecological studies have found that pigeon droppings and feathers carry harmful pathogens, including viruses, that can cause long-term respiratory issues, like hypersensitivity pneumonitis. This lung disease is caused by prolonged exposure to fungal spores found in dried pigeon droppings, which is seen in congested areas. Another disease linked with pigeons is cryptococcosis, an infection that can cause neurological effects are beyond health concerns. Mumbaikars have complained of the nuisance that pigeons amke create at bus stops and the stench their droppings leave in stretches near feeding highly acidic droppings have also caused damage to historical landmarks and public infrastructure like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj terminus.
