Grand Strand hotel occupancy sees 3-year high over Memorial Day weekend, Myrtle Beach chamber says

Yahoo31-05-2025
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Memorial Day weekend hotel occupancy along the Grand Strand was the highest it's been in three years, according to early data from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
The occupancy rate reached 81.2% on May 23, up 3.4% from the same day in 2024, according to STR, a CoStar Group company. The rate climbed to 92.8% on May 24, a 2.9% year-over-year increase. The rates also exceeded 2023 levels.
'This early data underscores the resilience of our destination and the momentum we're carrying into the summer,' said Stuart Butler, chief marketing officer at Visit Myrtle Beach. 'While we did see a slight dip in mid-week occupancy leading up to the Memorial Day weekend, Friday and Saturday were strong. These figures reflect overall market averages, and we recognize that individual property performance can vary. That said, we're encouraged by the results and by the continued interest in Myrtle Beach heading into peak season.'
Below is the 2025 lodging occupancy data from STR, followed by 2024 data for the same day of the week:
May 18: 48.9%, 48.5%
May 19: 49.5%, 53.7%
May 20: 50.5%, 55.5%
May 21: 51.5, 56.9%
May 22: 59.5%, 61.4%
May 23: 81.2%, 78.6%
May 24: 92.8%, 90.2%
More details can be found on the chamber's website; full results for the Memorial Day Weekend, including the statistics for May 26-27, will be available on June 6, the chamber said.

Adam Schefter shares troublesome update on Steelers' Cam Heyward contract talks

Steelers fans received some bad news just days before the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars — as DT Cameron Heyward is reportedly seeking a restructured deal, but talks haven't gone smoothly. ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news on Thursday, claiming Heyward hasn't fully practiced at training camp as he looks for a restructured deal — with his sources revealing that talks have stalled. "With little fanfare, Steelers four-time All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward hasn't fully participated in practice yet this summer as he awaits a restructured contract that has not gotten done, per sources," Schefter wrote on X. "Heyward is scheduled to make $14.75 million this season, with $13.45 million of that already having been paid as a roster bonus in March. Heyward is seeking a raise in a defensive market that has experienced a reset this offseason. Heyward and the Steelers have addressed this privately, but have not made any progress on any reworked deal, per sources." Heyward signed a three-year, $45 million extension in September 2024 — but it appears the 36-year old veteran looking for another payday after arguably one of the best seasons of his career last year. This situation is worth monitoring with nearly 30 days until the Steelers' regular season opener — and we at Steelers Wire will keep you updated as more information becomes available. This Is the Most-visited State Park in the U.S. for 2025—and It Has 19 Waterfalls in 2 Miles

Located in New York's Finger Lakes, Watkins Glen State Park leads this year's rankings by Google Maps. As travelers increasingly seek out nature-driven getaways, state parks have become popular destinations for everything from hiking and camping. While national parks often get the spotlight, state parks—also protected areas determined at the state level—offer equally stunning landscapes and easy access to local beauty. To see where Americans are heading this year, Google Maps recently analyzed its data to reveal the top 10 most visited state parks in the U.S. Google Maps based its rankings on direction requests made on the platform since Memorial Day 2025. Topping the list is Watkins Glen State Park in Schuyler County, New York. Watkins Glen State Park is the most well-known of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with 19 waterfalls packed into just two miles of gorges and streams. The park welcomes both overnight campers and day trip visitors, offering amenities like an Olympic-size pool, facilities for camping and picnicking, and opportunities for hiking and rainbow trout fishing. Similar to other New York State Parks, Watkins Glen State Park charges a fee for vehicles to use its facilities, which can vary depending on location and season. At the moment, the cost is $10 per vehicle, which includes use of the park's pool. Camping costs $18 to $30 per night, with an additional $5 nightly fee for out of state residents. New York State has two other parks in the top 10: Letchworth State Park at No. 5, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East," and Jones Beach State Park at No. 10, known for its wide stretches of sand and boardwalk. The top 10 is rounded out by Liberty State Park in New Jersey at No. 2, Silver Falls State Park in Oregon at No. 3, Starved Rock State Park in Illinois at No. 4, Hammonasset Beach State Park in Connecticut at No. 6, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California at No. 7, Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan at No. 8, and Blue Spring State Park in Florida in ninth place. According the Google Maps data, the most calming state park is St. Andrews State Park in Florida, which has a mile-and-a-half of pristine beaches for fishing and swimming that is a popular spot to see migratory birds. The best state park for hiking is Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin, which has 30 miles of hiking trails through quartzite bluffs that overlook a 360-acre lake.
